Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 4, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (day game):
Brian Downing, who later left the game with a broken finger, had three singles and two RBIs to pace the Angels to a 4-2 victory over the Orioles. Downing singled home runs in the second and eighth innings but was forced to retire in the bottom of eighth after being struck by a foul tip off the bat of Ken Singleton. Joe Rudi and Lyman Bostock also had RBI singles and Dave LaRoche earned his 15th save of the season.

Royals 2, Red Sox 1 at Boston (day game):
Winning their 14th game of the last 16, the Royals edged the Red Sox, 2-1. The Royals scored in the first on a double by Freddie Patek, single by Joe Zdeb and a fielder's choice grounder by Al Cowens. The winning run came in the third on successive singles by Zdeb, Cowens and Amos Otis. The Red Sox tallied in the eighth on a double by Dwight Evans and single by Butch Hobson.

[DH] White Sox 5, Rangers 4 (day game) / White Sox 4, Rangers 2 at Chicago (day game):
The White Sox delivered a double jolt to the Rangers, sweeping a twin bill, 5-4 and 4-2. The White Sox trailed, 4-2, going into the bottom of the eighth of the first game when the winning rally began with a one-out single by Eric Soderholm. Ralph Garr drew a walk and Reggie Cleveland replaced Jim Umbarger on the hill for Texas. Tom Spencer struck out, but Claudell Washington got an infield hit to load the sacks. Lamar Johnson then lined a single into short center field, scoring two runs, and when Juan Beniquez bobbled the ball for an error, Washington came home with the winning run. In the second game, the first two White Sox runs came in the fourth on a double by Garr, triple by Bob Molinaro and sacrifice fly by Washington. In the next inning, Don Kessinger drew a leadoff walk and came home two outs later on a triple by Garr. Molinaro opened the eighth with a single, advanced on a sacrifice and tallied on a single by Johnson.

A's 5, Indians 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Coming from behind with two runs in the ninth inning, the A's beat Cleveland, 5-4. The bases were empty with two out in the ninth when Dave Revering socked a two-base hit. Rick Langford ran for Revering and scored on a single by Taylor Duncan, who wound up on third base when Johnny Grubb's throw hit Langford. Jim Kern was replaced on the mound by Dan Spillner, who yielded a single to Jeff Newman, enabling the winning run to cross the plate.

Tigers 5, Mariners 4 at Detroit (day game):
Scoring five runs in the first three innings, the Tigers outlasted the Mariners, 5-4. Detroit opened with two runs in their first turn at bat. Ron LeFlore singled, stole second and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Thompson. A single by Steve Kemp drove in Lou Whitaker, who had reached first on a walk. Whitaker tripled a run across in the third and scored on a single by Rusty Staub. Staub moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Kemp.

[DH] Yankees 4, Twins 3 (day game) / Twins 2, Yankees 0 at New York (day game):
Struggling for a doubleheader split, the Yankees won the first game, 4-3, and the Twins captured the second contest, 2-0. Ron Guidry, going for his 16th victory, went 6 2/3 innings in the lidlifter and was removed after an error by Lou Piniella allowed the tying run to score. The Yankees won it in the eighth when Reggie Jackson singled, Graig Nettles forced him at second, Roy White walked and Jim Spencer got a pinch-hit two-bagger. The nightcap was scoreless going into the ninth inning when Roy Smalley led off with a double and went to third on an infield hit by Rod Carew. Sparky Lyle replaced Jim Beattie on the mound for the Yankees and was greeted by a pinch-hit single by Jose Morales, scoring Smalley. Butch Wynegar then bunted and when Lyle attempted to throw out Carew at third, he bounced the ball off the runner into left field, allowing Carew to score.

Brewers 10, Blue Jays 5 at Toronto (day game):
A bases-loaded triple by Tony Muser climaxed a four-run eighth inning that powered the Brewers to a 10-5 victory over the Blue Jays. The score was 5-5 going into the eighth when Dick Davis clouted a solo homer to break the deadlock and Muser later followed with his shot against the right field wall. Davis also tripled home a run in the ninth.

Expos 19, Braves 0 at Atlanta (day game):
In a staggering display of power, the Expos crushed the Braves, 19-0, as Larry Parrish drove in five runs with three homers and Andre Dawson had two round-trippers in the same inning. The Expos tied the major league record with eight home runs and set an N. L. record with 58 total bases. Parrish smacked a three-run blast in the third and added solo shots in the fourth and fifth innings. Dawson led off the second stanza with a circuit clout off starter Tommy Boggs and smashed a solo shot off reliever Craig Skok to cap the eight-run outburst. The Expos also got a three-run homer by Dave Cash in the third, two-run homer by Tony Perez in the fifth and two-run homer by Chris Speier in the sixth. The Expos also established a club record for hits in one game with 28.

Reds 5, Phillies 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Pete Rose extended his consecutive-game hitting streak to 43 as the Reds bested the Phillies, 5-3. The third baseman lashed a single to left in the fifth and a single to center in the sixth. A homer by George Foster, triple by Dave Concepcion and double by Cesar Geronimo gave the Reds a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Rose's fifth-inning single touched off the two-run frame. One run scored on a throwing error by Mike Schmidt and the other on a sacrifice fly by Dan Driessen. Driessen clubbed a homer in the seventh to give the Reds their final tally.

Astros 4, Mets 3 at Houston (night game):
The streaking Astros won their sixth consecutive game, coming from behind with two runs in the last of ninth inning to defeat the Mets, 4-3. Dave Bergman drew a walk to open the rally and scored on a double by Bruce Bochy, who continued to third when catcher John Stearns missed the outfield relay. Skip Lockwood took over from Dwight Bernard on the mound and got Julio Gonzalez to pop out before pinch-hitter Wilbur Howard slashed a single over the drawn-in infield to end the game.

Pirates 5, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (day game):
Snapping a seven-game losing streak, the Pirates prevailed over the Dodgers, 5-3. The Bucs scored in their first turn at bat on a double by Phil Garner, single by Dave Parker and sacrifice fly by Bill Robinson. In the second, John Milner stroked a leadoff single, took third on a single by Duffy Dyer and scored when Jim Rooker bounced into a forceout. Frank Taveras then tripled home Rooker and Charlie Hough replaced Doug Rau on the hill. The reliever gave up an RBI single to Garner. Parker hit a leadoff homer in the fifth.

Padres 3, Cardinals 2 at San Diego (day game):
Tying the club mark for consecutive victories, the Padres won their sixth straight game, 3-2, over the cellar-dwelling Cardinals. The Cards took a 2-1 lead in the sixth, but the Padres tied the contest in the bottom of the frame on a homer by Oscar Gamble. Derrel Thomas opened the Padres' seventh with a walk and after Fernando Gonzalez sacrificed, Buddy Schultz relieved Card starter Bob Forsch. Tucker Ashford received an intentional base on balls and Gene Richards followed with a double to right to plate the winning marker.

[DH] Giants 4, Cubs 2 (day game) / Giants 1, Cubs 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Regaining sole possession of first place in the Western division, the Giants swept a doubleheader from the Cubs, 4-2 and 1-0. Wild pitches by Cub starter Rick Reuschel helped the Giants in the opener. In the third inning, Bill Madlock doubled, went to third on an infield out and scored on a wild pitch. A double by Darrell Evans and single by Mike Ivie put the Giants ahead, 2-1, in the fourth and the winning run came in the sixth on a walk to Evans, an infield out, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Jim Dwyer. The only run of the second game came in the fourth inning on consecutive singles by Jack Clark, Ivie and Hector Cruz. Vida Blue picked up his 15th victory, tops in the league.
