Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 5, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
Winning his first major league start, Mike Proly scattered six hits in hurling the White Sox to a 5-2 decision over the Red Sox. With the Chisox trailing, 1-0, in the fourth inning, Ralph Garr doubled and came home on a circuit clout by Lamar Johnson. Bob Molinaro then belted Luis Tiant's next pitch into the right field bullpen. The Pale Hose added a pair in the eighth on doubles by Jorge Orta and Garr and a single by Johnson.

A's 1, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Striking out a career-high 11 batters, Rick Langford tossed a three-hitter as the A's whitewashed the Angels, 1-0. The A's run came in the second inning when Mario Guerrero drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a single by Taylor Duncan and scored on a single by Miguel Dilone. The Angels' Nolan Ryan struck out eight batters to move ahead of Warren Spahn into eighth place on the all-time strikeout list with 2,590.

Indians 2, Royals 1 at Cleveland (night game):
A pinch-single by Buddy Bell drove home the winning run as the Indians garnered a 2-1 triumph over the Royals. The score was 1-1 going into the bottom of the seventh when Rick Manning opened with a two-base hit. After reliever Steve Mingori got Johnny Grubb on a popup, Manning took third on a flyout. Marty Pattin then replaced Mingori and was greeted by Bell's hit to left. Grubb drove in the Tribe's first run with a single in the fifth. The lone Royal tally came across on a balk by Indian starter David Clyde in the second.

Yankees 8, Rangers 1 at New York (night game):
The hitting of Reggie Jackson and pitching of Catfish Hunter and Sparky Lyle sparked the Yankees to an 8-1 victory over the Rangers. Jackson, 16-for-28 since returning from a five-day suspension imposed by former Manager Martin, ignited a four-run outburst in the second inning with a three-base hit and scored on a single by Chris Chambliss. Graig Nettles drew a walk and after an out, a single by Bucky Dent loaded the sacks. A sacrifice fly by Mickey Rivers delivered one run and a triple by Willie Randolph produced two more. Jackson blasted a solo homer in the seventh inning.

Mariners 13, Twins 6 at Seattle (night game):
Bob Stinson drove in five runs with a grand slam and sacrifice fly and Leon Roberts knocked in four others to power the Mariners to a 13-6 lambasting of the Twins. Roberts drove in three tallies with a second-inning double to give the Mariners a 5-3 lead. His other RBI came on a sacrifice fly in the first frame. Stinson hit his round-tripper in the fifth. His other RBI came on a third-inning sacrifice fly.

Tigers 3, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (night game):
A wild pitch capped a three-run second inning as the Tigers' outlasted the Blue Jays, 3-2. Steve Kemp led off the Tiger second with a walk, advanced to third on a single by Tim Corcoran and scored on a double by Phil Mankowski. A walk to Alan Trammell loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly by Ron LeFlore knocked in the tying tally. Losing pitcher Jim Clancy then heaved a wild pitch for the eventual winning run. Rick Bosetti stole home for the Jays' first run and a sacrifice fly by Bob Bailor produced their other marker.

Braves 16, Reds 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Pete Rose had his hitting streak halted at 44 games while the Reds were losing to the Braves, 16-4. The Cincinnati third baseman walked in the first inning, lined out to pitcher in the second, lined out to shortstop in the fifth, lined out to third base in the seventh and struck out in the ninth. His first three trips to the plate were against Braves' starter Larry McWilliams and the last two against reliever Gene Garber. Meanwhile, Bob Horner drove in four runs in leading the Braves' attack. Horner's homer -- a three-run shot -- and another blast by Dale Murphy came in the fifth inning when the Braves broke a tie with a five-run rally. Barry Bonnell, who homered to lead off the seventh, also doubled home a run in the first and singled home another in the fifth.

Cubs 4, Cardinals 2 at Chicago (day game):
A three-run outburst in the third inning enabled the Cubs to edge the Cardinals, 4-2. After Ken Reitz put the Cards ahead, 1-0, in the top of the third with a homer, the Cubs erupted in their half of the frame. Ivan DeJesus walked, stole second, advanced to third on a safe bunt by Rodney Scott and scored on a single by Bill Buckner. A sacrifice fly by Bobby Murcer plated Scott. Buckner moved to second when Keith Hernandez fumbled the outfield relay and scored on a single by Mike Vail.

Astros 4, Giants 2 at Houston (night game):
Striking out 11 batters to push his league-leading total to 205, J.R. Richard pitched the Astros to a 4-2 decision over the Giants. The score was 2-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning when Giants' starter Bob Knepper walked two batters, uncorked a wild pitch and had a 3-2 count on Enos Cabell before being replaced by Randy Moffitt. Cabell hit Moffitt's first pitch up the middle for the game-winning runs.

Expos 4, Pirates 3 at Montreal (night game):
A two-run homer by Andre Dawson capped a four-run, second-inning explosion that carried the Expos to a 4-3 victory over the Pirates. Warren Cromartie led off the second with a single, advanced to second on an infield out, moved to third on a single by Chris Speier and scored on a squeeze bunt by Steve Rogers. A single by Dave Cash plated Speier, and Dawson followed with his 19th circuit clout.

Mets 5, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
A three-run homer by John Stearns propelled the Mets to a 5-1 victory over the Phillies. The score was 1-1 going into the seventh inning when Tim Foli stroked a two-out single and Steve Henderson walked. Stearns then unloaded into the seats. The Mets' final tally came in the eighth on a homer by Joel Youngblood.

Padres 1, Dodgers 0 at San Diego (night game):
The streaking Padres won their eighth straight game, edging the Dodgers, 1-0, as Randy Jones scattered seven hits. The lone score came in the ninth inning. Pinch-hitter Jerry Turner opened with an infield hit. Bill Almon ran for Turner and raced to third on a single by Dave Winfield. Oscar Gamble was walked intentionally to fill the bases. After Gene Tenace fouled out, Terry Forster was brought in to pitch to Derrel Thomas, but the strategy failed when Thomas stroked a single to score Almon.
