Brewers 5, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
After the Orioles won the completion of the July 31 suspended game, 6-5, the Brewers captured the regularly-scheduled contest, 5-3. In the completion of the suspended affair, which was 5-5 after nine innings, the Orioles won it in the bottom of the 10th. Lee May walked, stole second and, after an intentional pass to Andres Mora, scored on a pinch-single by Mike Anderson. It was Anderson's first hit in a Baltimore uniform. Mike Caldwell, with relief help, posted his 14th win of the season for the Brewers in the regularly-scheduled game. A single by Robin Yount and homer by Larry Hisle gave the Brewers two runs in the first inning. Sal Bando hit a solo round-tripper in the second. A double by Gorman Thomas gave the Brewers a 4-1 lead in the fourth and their final tally came in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Yount.
Angels 8, A's 2 at California (night game):
The steady pitching of Don Aase, who was supported by an 11-hit attack, carried the Angels to an 8-2 victory over the A's. The Angels scored in the opening inning on singles by Carney Lansford and Lyman Bostock and an error by center fielder Joe Wallis. They added another in the third on a triple by Ken Landreaux and sacrifice fly by Bostock. A homer by Bostock made it 3-0 in the sixth and sacrifice flies by Bobby Grich and Bostock produced another pair in the seventh.
Indians 5, Royals 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Completing a three-game tomahawking of the Royals, the Indians posted a 5-2 victory. The Tribe trailed, 2-1, going into the bottom of sixth, when Johnny Grubb hit a homer to tie the score. Gary Alexander then walked, took second on a sacrifice by Bernie Carbo and scored on a double by Tom Veryzer. Duane Kuiper was given an intentional walk and Horace Speed drew a walk to load the bases. Ted Cox laid down a bunt and Veryzer beat Dennis Leonard's throw to the plate. A sacrifice fly by Jim Norris scored the final tally.
Red Sox 7, Yankees 5 at New York (night game):
The game between the Yankees and Red Sox was suspended because of curfew after 14 innings and two rain delays with the score tied, 5-5. Action was to be resumed prior to the regularly-scheduled game August 3.
Mariners 3, Twins 1 at Seattle (night game):
A two-run homer by Bob Robertson lifted the Mariners to a 3-1 triumph over the Twins. The circuit clout came with one out in the sixth inning with Leon Roberts aboard via a single and snapped a 1-1 tie. Jim Colborn pitched his first complete game of the year.
Reds 6, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Led by Pete Rose, who rapped out four hits, the Reds posted a 6-2 victory over the Braves. Rose had a double, two singles and a sixth-inning solo homer. A bases-loaded triple by Dave Concepcion started the Reds on the road to victory in the first inning. Tom Seaver faced only 29 batters.
Cubs 3, Cardinals 2 at Chicago (day game):
A two-run triple by Mike Vail triggered the Cubs to a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals. In the first inning, Rodney Scott beat out a bunt, Bobby Murcer walked and Vail smashed his three-bagger into the right field corner. In the seventh stanza, Manny Trillo drew a walk, advanced on an infield out and wild pitch and scored what proved to be the deciding run on a single by Ivan DeJesus. Ted Simmons hit a two-run homer in the ninth, but Bruce Sutter came on to retire the side and pick up his 19th save.
Giants 4, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Snapping an eight-game Houston winning streak, the Giants prevailed over the Astros, 4-2, as John Montefusco scattered seven hits en route to his eighth victory of the season. The score was 1-1 in the fourth when Darrell Evans drew a walk, Willie McCovey singled and Terry Whitfield smashed the ball over the wall in right-center.
Pirates 3, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
With Bruce Kison and Kent Tekulve combining on a three-hitter, the Pirates enjoyed a 3-0 whitewashing of the Expos. A sacrifice fly by Dale Berra drove home the first run in the second inning and a homer by Phil Garner in the sixth upped the margin to 2-0. The Pirates' final tally came in the eighth on singles by Duffy Dyer, Garner and Dave Parker.
Phillies 8, Mets 6 at Philadelphia (day game):
Roaring to an early 8-0 lead, the Phillies hung on to defeat the Mets, 8-6. In a five-run second inning, two tallies came across on sacrifice flies by Jerry Martin and Randy Lerch and three scored on a homer by Garry Maddox. Mike Schmidt hit a leadoff homer in the third. A double by Martin and single by Maddox produced another run in the fourth. Bob Boone completed the Phils' scoring with an RBI single in the fifth.
Padres 2, Dodgers 1 at San Diego (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Padres edged the Dodgers, 2-1, for their ninth straight victory. Successive singles by Ozzie Smith, Derrel Thomas and Dave Winfield loaded the bases with one out in the first inning. One out later, Gene Tenace lined a single to left to drive in Smith and Thomas. Rollie Fingers came on in the eighth inning to snuff out a Dodger rally and record his 25th save.
