Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 12, Twins 3 at California (night game):
Pressed into service as a starter, Al Fitzmorris gained his first victory in nearly one year when the Angels routed the Twins, 12-3. Dave Frost, who was scheduled to start, had to be scratched because of back problems. Fitzmorris last was a winner on August 24, 1977, when the righthander was with the Indians and beat his present Angel teammates. The Angels, who piled up 16 hits, broke the game wide open by sending 13 men to bat and scoring seven runs in the third inning. Brian Downing drove in two runs with a double and Joe Rudi accounted for two with a double and bases-loaded walk.
Tigers 7, White Sox 1 at Detroit (night game):
Making it 3-3-3, Kip Young made his third major league start, pitched his third complete game and gained his third straight victory when the Tigers defeated the White Sox, 7-1. Lance Parrish homered for the Tigers and also scored two other times after hitting a double and single. Aurelio Rodriguez added a round-tripper to the attack.
Blue Jays 5, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Rallying for two runs in the ninth inning, the Blue Jays gained a 5-4 victory over the Royals, who lost their fourth straight game. Dave McKay and Al Woods sparked the rally with singles. After Rick Cerone sacrificed, McKay scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Otto Velez. Rick Bosetti then singled to drive in Woods with the winning run.
Brewers 6, Red Sox 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Playing before a crowd of 52,562, the Brewers struck for three runs in the first inning on two consecutive homers and went on to defeat the Red Sox, 6-2. With one out in the first, Don Money singled and Sal Bando and Larry Hisle followed with successive shots off Bill Lee, who was knocked out before the inning ended. The Brewers continued their slugging with two more homers. Gorman Thomas connected for a two-run drive in the fourth and Cecil Cooper added a solo smash in the sixth, both off Jim Wright. Meanwhile, Lary Sorensen held the Red Sox to six scattered hits in gaining his 13th victory.
Orioles 2, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
Doug DeCinces, who was the A. L.'s Player of the Month in July as slugging star for Orioles, smashed a two-run homer in the seventh inning to beat the Yankees, 2-1, and hand Ron Guidry his second defeat of the season against 15 victories. The Yankees counted their run off Mike Flanagan in the third on singles by Bucky Dent and Mickey Rivers, a wild pitch and an infield out by Willie Randolph, but an error then helped beat Guidry when Eddie Murray was safe on a wild throw by Dent and DeCinces hit for the circuit.
A's 6, Mariners 1 at Oakland (night game):
While John Henry Johnson pitched a seven-hitter, Willie Horton drove in three runs with as many singles to pace the A's to a 6-1 victory over the Mariners. In the first inning. Mike Edwards walked, stole second and scored on a single by Horton. In the third, Horton's second hit drove in Joe Wallis, who had doubled. Edwards walked in the fourth, stole his second base of the game and counted on Horton's third single.
Rangers 8, Indians 0 at Texas (night game):
Fergie Jenkins moved into 11th place on the major leagues' all-time list of strikeout kings, fanning eight to boost his career total to 2,545 while pitching the Rangers to an 8-0 victory over the Indians. The Rangers, who broke a five-game losing streak, exploded for six of their runs in the second inning on six hits plus two walks, including two-run singles by Kurt Bevacqua and Al Oliver.
Braves 7, Astros 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Phil Niekro turned in his 15th complete game of the season and improved his record to 13-11 by pitching the Braves to a 7-2 victory over the Astros. The Braves decided the outcome in the first inning when Jerry Royster singled, Rowland Office walked and Jeff Burroughs homered.
Cubs 6, Expos 4 at Chicago (day game):
Although three of their runners were thrown out at home trying to score, the Cubs were able to defeat the Expos, 6-4. The Expos jumped ahead with three runs in the third, but the Cubs came right back with a matching trio in their half on a double by Mike Vail, homer by Dave Kingman and singles by Ed Putman, Rick Reuschel and Ivan DeJesus. After the Expos regained the lead with a run in the seventh, the Cubs rallied again. Greg Gross singled to open the home half and Larry Biittner was safe on an error by Dave Cash. After DeJesus sacrified, Bobby Murcer laid down a safe bunt to tie the score and Bill Buckner followed with a single to send the Cubs ahead. The Cubs added an insurance run in the eighth on two walks and a single by Biittner.
Padres 3, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Padres extended their club record winning streak to 10 games, scoring on an error in the eighth inning to defeat the Reds, 3-2. The Padres took a 2-0 lead in the first when Paul Moskau loaded the bases with three walks and Gene Tenace singled. A sacrifice fly by Mike Lum in the fourth and another by Pete Rose in the seventh tied the score before Tenace opened the Padres' eighth by coaxing a walk from reliever Doug Bair. Broderick Perkins then beat out a tap to the left of the mound and when Bair's throw to first hit the runner and bounded away, Tenace came home with the deciding run.

In the nightcap, Greg Luzinski homered for the Phillies in the second inning to tie the score at 1-1, but the Pirates broke away with three runs in the third on a single by Frank Taveras, forceout by Phil Garner and singles by Dave Parker, Bill Robinson and Manny Sanguillen.
Giants 2, Dodgers 1 at San Francisco (night game):
With last-out help from Randy Moffitt, Vida Blue became the first 16-game winner of the season when the Giants defeated the Dodgers, 2-1. Blue allowed only two hits, including a homer by Ron Cey in the fifth inning. When Reggie Smith doubled for the other hit with two away in the ninth, Moffitt took over and retired Cey. The Giants' first run off Doug Rau in the second inning was unearned when Larry Herndon tripled and continued home on an error by Smith in right field.
