Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 4, Twins 3 at California (day game):
A one-out single by Carney Lansford in the bottom of the ninth gave the Angels a 4-3 triumph over the Twins. Ken Landreaux opened the Angel ninth with a safe bunt, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Rick Miller and scored when Lansford nicked reliever Mike Marshall for a single to center.

Tigers 8, White Sox 0 at Detroit (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Tigers blanked the White Sox, 8-0, behind the six-hit pitching of Jim Slaton. Lou Whitaker had three singles and scored three runs. Rusty Staub blasted his 18th homer of the season following a single by Whitaker in the third inning. Two innings later, Steve Kemp slammed a round-tripper after a walk to Whitaker and single by Staub.

Royals 12, Blue Jays 5 at Kansas City (day game):
The first career grand slam by Al Cowens came in the first inning and triggered the Royals to a 12-5 rout of the Blue Jays. Cowens and Hal McRae each collected three hits and McRae also knocked in three runs with a double and sacrifice fly. John Mayberry hit a solo homer for the Jays and Rico Carty hit a ninth-inning two-run round-tripper.

Red Sox 4, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
With Luis Tiant scattering eight hits, the Red Sox blanked the Brewers, 4-0. The Sox scored three of their runs in the second inning. Singles by Carl Yastrzemski, Fred Lynn and Dwight Evans loaded the bases and a single by Bob Bailey drove in the first tally. A walk to Butch Hobson forced in another and a single by Rick Burleson accounted for the third. The Sox added their final marker in the eighth on a walk to Jim Rice, double by Yastrzemski and single by Evans.

Yankees 3, Orioles 0 at New York (day game):
Posting the 42nd shutout of his career, Catfish Hunter hurled the Yankees to a 3-0 triumph over the Orioles. The Yankees scored two runs in the first inning. An infield hit by Mickey Rivers, single by Jay Johnstone and walk to Thurman Munson loaded the bases. Chris Chambliss then singled to right, scoring Rivers and Johnstone. A single by Johnstone, walk to Munson and single by Graig Nettles produced another tally in the sixth.

[DH] A's 4, Mariners 3 (day game) / A's 4, Mariners 3 at Oakland (day game):
The A's took both ends of a doubleheader from the Mariners by identical scores of 4-3. The score was 3-3 going into the bottom of the eighth inning in the first game when Dave Revering led off with a double. Darrell Woodard, making his major league debut from Jersey (Eastern), was inserted as a pinch-runner and scored on a single by Taylor Duncan. The A's came back from a 3-1 deficit in the nightcap. Mitchell Page provided two RBIs with a triple and single and the winning run came across in the seventh on a single by Rob Picciolo, sacrifice bunt by Mike Edwards and single by Dell Alston.

Rangers 3, Indians 2 at Texas (night game):
A pinch home run by rookie Gary Gray with two out in the bottom of the ninth gave the Rangers a 3-2 decision over the Indians. After the Indians went ahead with two unearned runs in the top of the ninth, the first two Rangers were retired in the home half before Mike Hargrove singled. After Mike Jorgensen ran for Hargrove, Gray batted for Bert Campaneris and hit an 0-2 pitch off the left field foul pole.

Braves 3, Astros 2 at Atlanta (day game):
With rookie Larry McWilliams winning his fourth straight game and Bob Horner leading the attack with two RBIs, the Braves achieved a 3-2 decision over the Astros. After a homer by Bob Watson put the Astros ahead, 1-0, in the second inning, the Braves tied it in the bottom of the frame on a triple by Jeff Burroughs and single by Horner. The Braves went ahead, 2-1, in the third on a double by Rowland Office and single by Gary Matthews. The final Atlanta tally came in the sixth when Office doubled, advanced to third on a flyout by Burroughs and scored on a sacrifice fly by Horner.

[DH] Expos 2, Cubs 1 (day game) / Cubs 4, Expos 3 at Chicago (day game):
Homers by Gary Carter and Andre Dawson lifted the Expos to a 2-1 triumph in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Cubs came from behind in the second game to win, 4-3. Carter's blast led off the third inning and Dawson's clout came in the sixth. The Cubs got their run in the ninth and just missed tying the game. A single by Bobby Murcer and double by Greg Gross put runners at second and third with one out. A single by Manny Trillo scored Murcer, but Gross was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Ellis Valentine. The Cubs trailed in the nightcap, 2-1, going into the bottom of the eighth when Larry Biittner opened with a single. Jerry White drew a base on balls and, after an out, a double by Gross plated Biittner. Trillo drew an intentional walk and Darold Knowles replaced Mike Garman on the mound for the Expos. Mike Vail followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Cubs ahead, 3-2, and pinch-hitter Ed Putman singled home Gross with what proved to be the winning run.

Reds 3, Padres 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
A throwing error by shortstop Ozzie Smith opened the door for three runs as the Reds downed the Padres, 3-1. The Reds trailed, 1-0, going into the bottom of the seventh when Vic Correll stroked a one-out single. Pinch-hitter Dave Concepcion then hit a routine grounder to Smith, who threw the ball into right field, allowing Correll to score. Concepcion went to third on the play and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter JOhnny Bench. A double by Pete Rose and single by Junior Kennedy gave the Reds their final run.

[DH] Phillies 3, Pirates 2 (day game) / Phillies 5, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Getting tight pitching from Dick Ruthven and Steve Carlton, the Phillies swept a doubleheader from the Pirates, 3-2 and 5-0. In the opener, Ruthven won his fourth straight and his seventh since joining the Phillies in June. The Phils scored their initial run for Ruthven in the first inning on singles by Mike Schmidt, Greg Luzinski and Richie Hebner. Larry Bowa then supplied the deciding blow in the fourth, hitting a single that drove in two runs following a single by Ted Sizemore and double by Bake McBride. In the second game, Carlton tossed a three-hitter. The Phillies began scoring in their first turn at bat when McBride singled, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Luzinski. Singles by Tim McCarver and Carlton, a wild pitch by loser Jim Bibby and double by McBride made it 4-0 in the second.

Dodgers 5, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
A four-run first-inning explosion and four-hit pitching by Burt Hooton carried the Dodgers to a 5-1 victory over the Giants. Reggie Smith and Lee Lacy each doubled home two runs in a first-inning rout of Giants' starter Bob Knepper. Smith drilled a solo homer in the fifth. The Giants' lone tally came in the sixth on a triple by Bill Madlock and single by Jim Dwyer.

Cardinals 3, Mets 1 at St. Louis (day game):
A homer and single by George Hendrick paced the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over the Mets. Garry Templeton hit Jerry Koosman's first pitch in the first inning for a double and took third when first baseman Willie Montanez misplayed Tony Scott's grounder for an error. Hendrick and Roger Freed followed with RBI singles. Hendrick hit his homer in the third inning.
