Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 5, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
A three-run homer by Lamar Johnson propelled the White Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Royals. The Sox trailed, 3-2, going into the top of the seventh when Don Kessinger opened with a single. Bob Molinaro, attempting to sacrifice, forced Kessinger at second. But Thad Bosley followed with a single and starter DennisLeonard was replaced by Al Hrabosky. The reliever got the second out of the inning but Johnson tagged his first offering for a round-tripper.

Mariners 6, Twins 5 at Minnesota (night game):
A wild pitch produced the winning run as the Mariners outlasted the Twins, 6-5, in a 14-inning marathon. The score was 5-5 going into the top of the 14th when Bruce Bochte opened by drawing a base on balls. Julio Cruz was inserted as a pinch-runner and was sacrificed to second by Craig Reynolds and advanced to third on a deep fly to right by Ruppert Jones. Stan Perzanowski then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Cruz to score. The Mariners led early, 5-0, but the Twins came back and finally tied the contest in the seventh stanza on a solo homer by Roy Smalley.

A's 1, Angels 0 at Oakland (night game):
Pitching his third complete game of the season, Steve Renko unfurled a four-hitter as the A's edged the Angels, 1-0. The A's run came in the opening frame. Joe Wallis walked and Mitchell Page doubled him to third. When right fielder Lyman Bostock attempted to throw out Page at second, the ball skipped past second baseman Bobby Grich and Wallis scored easily.

Blue Jays 2, Orioles 1 at Toronto (day game):
A four-hitter by Jim Clancy gave the Blue Jays a 2-1 triumph over the Orioles. The game was 1-1 in the seventh when John Mayberry led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Alan Ashby. The first Jay tally came in the third when Dave McKay led off with a single, moved around to third on two infield outs and scored on an infield single by Bob Bailor.

Cubs 5, Pirates 4 at Chicago (day game):
A five-run explosion in the fourth inning carried the Cubs to a 5-4 triumph over the Pirates. Trailing, 3-0, the Cubs loaded the bases on singles by Mike Vail and Manny Trillo and a walk to Davey Johnson. Starter Jerry Reuss then committed a balk, allowing Vail to score. After Tim Blackwell walked to reload the sacks, Ed Whitson replaced Reuss. A grounder by Larry Biittner scored Trillo, and Ivan DeJesus walked to again fill the sacks. Rodney Scott walked to force in a run and Bill Buckner then lined a single off the glove of shortstop Frank Taveras to send home two tallies.

Braves 5, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Taking advantage of wildness by Cincinnati ace Tom Seaver, the Braves downed the Reds, 5-3, in a nationally televised contest. In the second inning, Jeff Burroughs walked and moved to second on a single by Joe Nolan. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Burroughs scored on a passed ball that also moved Nolan to third. A sacrifice fly by Rod Gilbreath scored Nolan. In the fourth frame, a walk to Nolan, triple by Dale Murphy and squeeze bunt by Gilbreath produced another pair.

Dodgers 3, Padres 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Home runs by Lee Lacy and Joe Ferguson powered the Dodgers to a 3-1 decision over the Padres. Ferguson's blow was a solo shot in the second inning and Lacy's clout came with two out in the fourth frame after a single by Dusty Baker. The win moved the Dodgers within two games of first place in the N.L. West.

Cardinals 6, Phillies 3 at St. Louis (night game):
The cellar-dwelling Cardinals jolted the first-place Phillies with a five-run seventh inning and went on to a 6-3 victory. The Redbirds trailed, 3-1, going into the bottom of seventh when Roger Freed began the winning rally with a two-base hit. Consecutive singles by Ken Reitz and Jerry Morales plated Freed. Pinch-hitter Steve Swisher slapped a one-out single that drove in Reitz and sent starter Randy Lerch to the showers. Garry Templeton greeted reliever Tug McGraw with a single to send home Morales. Ken Oberkfell, the pinch-runner for Swisher, and Templeton scored on a double by George Hendrick. Hendrick had a third RBI on a sixth-inning homer.
