Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 9, Indians 7 at Boston (night game):
Four home runs, two by Jim Rice, powered the Red Sox to a 9-7 thumping of the Indians. Carlton Fisk hit a three-run smash in the first inning. The Red Sox then exploded for five runs in the third on a three-run round-tripper by Rice and two-run blast by Dwight Evans. Rice added a bases-empty homer in the sixth.

Rangers 9, Tigers 4 at Detroit (night game):
Winning their fourth straight game, the Rangers defeated the Tigers, 9-4. A four-run fifth-inning was highlighted by a two-run single by Bump Wills and two-run double by Bobby Bonds. Jim Sundberg belted a two-run homer in the seventh and Bonds clouted a solo round-tripper in the ninth to complete the scoring.

Royals 10, White Sox 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Unleashing an 18-hit attack, the Royals pasted the White Sox, 10-4. Seven different batters drove home a run apiece as the Royals scored four runs in the second inning and four more in the fifth frame. Hal McRae clouted a two-run homer in eighth. Marty Pattin earned a save by pitching 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball. The reliever took over with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh and induced Lamar Johnson to ground into a double play.

Twins 10, Mariners 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A pinch-hit grand slam by Mike Cubbage highlighted a seven-run sixth inning that carried the Twins to a 10-2 rout of the Mariners. After Mariner starter Rick Honeycutt gave up a run-scoring single to Larry Wolfe, reliever Mike Parrott walked Glenn Borgmann with the bases loaded in the sixth to set the stage for Cubbage's fourth career slam. An RBI single by Jose Morales accounted for the final tally of the inning.

Yankees 3, Brewers 0 at New York (night game):
A combined four-hitter by Dick Tidrow and Rich Gossage enabled the Yankees to blank the Brewers, 3-0. With the game scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning, Bucky Dent reached second base when Robin Yount threw his grounder wildly past first, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a double by Willie Randolph. Randolph moved to third on a flyout and scored on a single by Lou Piniella. Randolph doubled home the Yankees' final run in the eighth.

Angels 2, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
A bases-loaded walk provided the winning run as the Angels edged the A's, 2-1. The A's led, 1-0, going into the top of the seventh inning when Joe Rudi opened with an infield single and, one out later, advanced to second on a single by Carney Lansford. Dave Chalk then hit an apparent double-play grounder to Taylor Duncan, who fumbled the ball. Mario Guerrero picked up the ball and fired it wildly past second, allowing Rudi to score. Bobby Grich followed with a sharp single to center, loading the bases and bringing on Bob Lacey in relief of Dave Heaverlo. Ken Landreaux popped out, but Merv Rettenmund walked on a 3-2 pitch to force home Lansford.

Blue Jays 5, Orioles 3 at Toronto (night game):
Posting their sixth straight victory over the Orioles at Exhibition Stadium, the Blue Jays prevailed, 5-3. The Orioles took an early 3-0 lead, but the Jays came back and eventually tied the contest on a two-run homer by Rico Carty in the third inning. The deadlock was broken in the fifth when Al Woods clouted his first homer of the season. The Jays added an insurance marker in the eighth on an RBI double by Doug Ault.

Pirates 9, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):
A grand-slam homer by John Milner climaxed a five-run fifth inning that carried the Pirates to a 9-5 victory over the Cubs. A double by Frank Taveras opened the big frame. After a single by Willie Stargell scored Taveras, a double by Dave Parker moved Stargell to third and sent Cub starter Rick Reuschel to the showers. Willie Hernandez came on to walk Bill Robinson intentionally and yield a gopher ball to Milner.

Braves 6, Reds 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
The pitching and batting of Phil Niekro highlighted the Braves' 6-5 defeat of the Reds. The veteran knuckleballer had a no-hitter for six innings but the spell was broken when Dan Driessen stroked a one-out single in the seventh as the Reds picked up two unearned runs. A three-run eighth inning gave the Braves their margin of victory. Jeff Burroughs singled off Pedro Borbon's right hand, forcing the Reds' reliever to leave the game. Dave Tomlin took over the mound chores and yielded a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases before being yanked in favor of Manny Sarmiento. One out later, Niekro rifled a two-run single to left.

Dodgers 3, Padres 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Two homers by Steve Garvey lifted the Dodgers to a 3-2 decision over the Padres. The first baseman hit a solo clout in the second inning and a two-run blast in the fourth frame. The victory was the fourth straight for the Dodgers and the loss was the fourth in a row for the Padres.

Expos 6, Mets 1 at Montreal (night game):
A six-run explosion in the first inning propelled the Expos to a 6-1 triumph over the Mets. The first two runs came in on a bases-loaded single by Larry Parrish. A double by Warren Cromartie added another pair. Chris Speier singled home the inning's fifth run, and winning pitcher Dan Schatzeder helped his own cause with a double to plate the Expos' final tally.

Giants 3, Astros 2 at San Francisco (night game):
A bases-loaded single by Darrell Evans enabled the Giants to squeeze past the Astros, 3-2. The score was 1-1 going into the bottom of the third when Terry Whitfield beat out a bunt and went to third on a hit-and-run single by Jack Clark. A walk to Willie McCovey filled the sacks and Evans followed with a two-run single. Randy Moffitt relieved in the ninth with runners on first and third and two out and ended the game by whiffing Enos Cabell on three pitches.

[DH] Cardinals 2, Phillies 0 (night game) / Cardinals 6, Phillies 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Extending their winning skein to five games -- their longest of the season -- the Cardinals jolted the Phillies twice, 2-0 and 6-2. Pete Vuckovich tossed a four-hitter in the first game. Singles by Lou Brock and Garry Templeton and a double by Ted Simmons gave the Redbirds a run in the opening frame and the other tally came in the third when Brock singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Keith Hernandez. In the second contest, Tom Bruno, making his first major league start, hurled seven strong innings to get credit for the victory. The Cards snapped a 1-1 tie with four runs in the third. Jerry Mumphrey led off with a single, and after a walk to Ken Oberkfell, George Hendrick lined a double to plate Mumphrey. Hernandez drew a walk and Jim Lonborg was given the hook in favor of Warren Brusstar. After Oberkfell scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Tony Scott, Steve Swisher and Mike Phillips capped the uprising with RBI singles.
