Indians 5, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
With Rick Wise getting credit for his third victory of the year over his former teammates, the Indians beat the Red Sox, 5-1. The score was 1-1 in the seventh inning when the Tribe went ahead on a single by Buddy Bell, a sacrifice and a double by Ted Cox. Andre Thornton hit a solo homer in the eighth and the Indians added a pair in the ninth on singles by Bo Diaz and Rick Manning, an error by third baseman Butch Hobson and a single by Johnny Grubb.

Tigers 5, Rangers 2 at Detroit (night game):
A grand slam by Tim Corcoran -- his first home run in 79 games this season -- lifted the Tigers to a 5-2 victory over the Rangers. The Tigers trailed, 2-1, going into the bottom of the eighth when Jim Umbarger took over the mound chores for the Rangers. A double by Rusty Staub, single by Jason Thompson and walk to Steve Kemp loaded the sacks before Corcoran slammed an 0-2 pitch into the upper deck in right field.

Mariners 4, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
A three-run homer by Dan Meyer capped a four-run first inning that propelled the Mariners to a 4-1 triumph over the Twins. In the opening frame, Craig Reynolds singled, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Ruppert Jones. Leon Roberts singled and after Bruce Bochte struck out, Meyer followed with his seventh homer of the campaign.

Yankees 8, Brewers 7 at New York (night game):
The Yankees rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull out an 8-7 triumph over the Brewers. Trailing, 7-3, entering the ninth, the Yankees made it 7-5 on a two-run homer by Mickey Rivers. Willie Randolph reached first on an error by shortstop Robin Yount and Thurman Munson walked. A double by Chris Chambliss scored Randolph. A walk to Graig Nettles loaded the bases and Reggie Jackson was hit by a pitch, forcing in the tying run. Bill Castro replaced Bob McClure on the mound. Lou Piniella laid down an attempted squeeze bunt that was fielded by catcher Buck Martinez. In attempting to step on the plate for a forceout, Martinez dropped the ball, allowing Chambliss to score the winning run.

Blue Jays 8, White Sox 0 at Toronto (night game):
A three-hitter by Jesse Jefferson and a six-run second inning carried the Blue Jays to an 8-0 rout of the White Sox. Rico Carty led off the second with a double and after a walk and single loaded the bases, Alan Ashby drew a walk, forcing in the first run. A single by Dave McKay drove home two tallies and a single by Luis Gomez added another marker. After a sacrifice, two more runs scored on a sacrifice fly by Al Woods and a bad relay throw by Don Kessinger.

Cubs 5, Pirates 4 at Chicago (day game):
After getting a bases-loaded double by Bill Buckner in the fifth inning, the Cubs needed an unearned run in the sixth to edge the Pirates, 5-4. In the fifth, Dave Roberts and Ivan DeJesus both beat out bunts and Rodney Scott was hit by a pitch to fill the bases before Buckner's two-bagger put the Cubs ahead, 4-2. The Pirates then tied the score, but the Cubs put over the winning run in the sixth when Tim Blackwell was safe on an error, advanced on an infield out and scored on a double by Scott.

Reds 10, Braves 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Getting his first shutout of the season, Paul Moskau pitched a four-hitter as the Reds routed the Braves, 10-0. The Reds clinched the game with a five-run outburst in the sixth inning. A double by Ken Griffey brought home the third run, another scored on an infield out and the fifth tally of the frame counted on a sacrifice fly by Dan Driessen.

Dodgers 3, Padres 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Posting their fifth straight victory, the Dodgers blanked the Padres, 3-0, behind the five-hit hurling of Doug Rau. Dusty Baker hit a solo homer in the second inning. In the fourth frame, a single by Ron Cey, double by Baker and two-run single by Johnny Oates put the game on ice.

Astros 6, Giants 5 at San Francisco (night game):
Taking advantage of loose play, the Astros squeezed out a 6-5 victory over the Giants. In the Astros' first turn at bat, four hits, two errors and a balk produced four runs. A single by Bob Watson drove in another marker in the third and the Astros' final run came in the seventh as Terry Puhl scored when his fly ball was dropped by right fielder Jack Clark for a four-base error.

Phillies 6, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
