Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Royals 2 at Baltimore (night game):
A single by Lee May snapped a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning, lifting the Orioles to a 3-2 victory over the Royals. Ken Singleton drew a two-out walk in the eighth, moved to third on a single by Eddie Murray and scored on May's hit. The Orioles trailed, 2-0, after five innings but tied the game in the sixth on a two-run homer by Singleton.

Red Sox 6, Indians 5 at Boston (day game):
A dropped popup in the 13th triggered a two-run comeback that gave the Red Sox a 6-5 victory over the Indians. After an RBI single by Andre Thornton put the Tribe ahead, 5-4, in the top of the 13th, Butch Hobson led off the bottom of the frame by hitting a 90-foot pop fly that Thornton dropped for an error. Hobson kept running, rounded second and scored when catcher Bo Diaz retrieved the ball and threw wildly past third. George Scott then smashed a double and was replaced by pinch-runner Garry Hancock, who scored the winning run on a single by Rick Burleson.

Yankees 9, Brewers 0 at New York (night game):
Becoming the league's first 16-game winner, Ron Guidry fired a three-hitter as the Yankees whitewashed the Brewers, 9-0. The Yanks scored twice in the first inning on an RBI single by Lou Piniella and RBI groundout by Graig Nettles. They added three more in the third on a two-run single by Chris Chambliss and a fielder's choice grounder by Roy White, and made it 8-0 in the fourth on a two-run double by Chambliss and RBI groundout by Piniella.

Angels 16, A's 5 at Oakland (day game):
Pounding out 18 hits, the Angels trounced the A's, 16-5. Lyman Bostock and Don Baylor led the attack. Bostock had an RBI single in the second inning and a bases-loaded triple in the fourth frame. Baylor had a two-run double in the first inning and RBI single in the fourth. A's second baseman Mike Edwards set an A.L. record with unassisted double plays in the first and fourth innings. No major league player had accomplished this feat since 1899.

Blue Jays 7, White Sox 3 at Toronto (night game):
Winning their fourth straight game, the Blue Jays swept past the White Sox, 7-3. The score was 3-3 into the bottom of the seventh inning when Howell drew a two-out walk. Rico Carty followed with a home run. The Jays added another pair in the eighth on RBI doubles by Rick Bosetti and Bob Bailor.

Dodgers 12, Giants 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Handing Vida Blue his first defeat since June 5, the Dodgers thrashed the Giants, 12-2. Reggie Smith clouted a two-run homer in the first inning, hit a two-run single in the fourth and added a fifth RBI with a single in the seventh. Ron Cey hit a two-run round-tripper off Blue in the fourth and Steve Garvey had a bases-loaded triple off reliever Greg Minton in the sixth.

Phillies 3, Pirates 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Winning his fifth straight game, Dick Ruthven scattered six hits in pitching the Phillies to a 3-1 triumph over the Pirates. The Phils got two runs in the third inning on a single by Ted Sizemore, triple by Ruthven and double by Larry Bowa. Their final tally came in the sixth when Bowa singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on a double by Mike Schmidt.

Padres 15, Reds 3 at San Diego (night game):
Taking advantage of 12 walks and three errors, the Padres routed the Reds, 15-3. Three runs scored in the first inning when Reds' infielder Junior Kennedy threw wildly into left field on a double-play attempt with the bases full. Gene Tenace blasted a three-run homer in the sixth and doubled home two more markers in the seventh, when the Padres raked reliever Dave Tomlin for six runs on seven hits.
