Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 2, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
A combination of error and rain enabled the Yankees to defeat the Orioles, 2-1, in a game that was abbreviated to 5½ innings because of wet grounds. The contest was delayed for two hours, 27 minutes before the umpires called it. Catfish Hunter held the Orioles to four hits, including a homer by Ken Singleton in the first inning. The Yankees rallied against Dennis Martinez in the fourth. With one out, Chris Chambliss and Reggie Jackson singled and Jay Johnstone walked to load the bases. Gary Thomasson then grounded to Rich Dauer, who threw to Kiko Garcia, forcing Johnstone at second, but Garcia fired wildly to first base in an attempt to complete the double play and both Chambliss and Jackson scored.

Brewers 10, Red Sox 5 at Boston (night game):
Luis Tiant's bid for his 200th career victory was turned back when the Brewers knocked out the veteran righthander in the fifth inning and trounced the Red Sox, 10-5. The Brewers began their assault on Tiant with three runs in the second on a single by Robin Yount, homer by Gorman Thomas, double by Paul Molitor and single by Sal Bando. After picking up a pair in the fifth while chasing Tiant, the Brewers iced the decision with three runs off Tom Burgmeier in the sixth. Larry Hisle batted in one run with a double and Ben Oglivie accounted for two with a single.

Tigers 7, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
After the Tigers erupted for six runs in the third inning, Jack Billingham was able to breeze past the White Sox, 7-3, for his sixth straight victory. Singles by Mickey Stanley and Ron LeFlore around a walk to Alan Trammell loaded the bases to set the stage for the Tigers' big inning. Lou Whitaker followed with a double and Rusty Staub with a single, each driving in two runs. After two out, Aurelio Rodriguez and Stanley added run-scoring singles.

Rangers 8, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Two-run homers by Bobby Bonds and Juan Beniquez helped power the Rangers to an 8-2 victory over the Indians and enabled Jon Matlack to win a game on the road for the first time this season. The decision brought Matlack's record to 10-9, but the lefthander was 0-7 away from home before beating the Indians. Bonds hit his a homer in the fourth inning and drove in another run with a double in the seventh. Beniquez connected for the circuit in the eighth.

The A's got three-hit pitching from Rick Langford and won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 2-0, but the Twins came back to gain a split with a 3-2 victory in the second game. Mario Guerrero doubled in the fourth inning of the opener, stopped at third on a single by Dave Revering and scored the A's initial run as Taylor Duncan grounded into a double play. Singles by Jim Essian and Mike Edwards and a sacrifice fly by Joe Wallis added the other run in the seventh. In the nightcap, the A's tied the score in the sixth on a triple by Mitchell Page, single by Willie Horton and double by Guerrero. The Twins replied with their winning run in the seventh when Hosken Powell doubled and Glenn Borgmann singled.

Joe Rudi started the Angels' scoring with a homer in the second inning. Singles by Ken Landreaux and Carney Lansford around a stolen base added a run in the third. A walk to Jim Anderson and singles by Lansford and Lyman Bostock completed the Angels' scoring in the fifth. Ryan, who walked six, lost his bid for a shutout in the ninth on two passes and a single by Dan Meyer.

Accounting for his fourth RBI of the game, Clint Hurdle singled in the 10th inning to bring the Royals a 9-8 victory over the Blue Jays. With two out, Freddie Patek drew a walk and stole second ahead of Hurdle's hit. Hurdle drove in one run with a sacrifice fly in the second and tied the score at 8-8 with a two-run homer in the eighth.
