Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 3, Yankees 0 at Baltimore (day game):
The Orioles got a 3-0 victory over the Yankees in a game called after six innings because of wet grounds. The Yankees scored five runs in the top of seventh, but rain poured down at the start of the Orioles' half. After a wait of 38 minutes, umpire Don Denkinger ruled the field unplayable, causing the game to revert to the last full inning. The first Bird run came in the sixth inning on a double by Rick Dempsey, walk to Eddie Murray and throwing error by Chris Chambliss. Doug DeCinces then hit an RBI double and the Orioles scored another on a sacrifice fly by Terry Crowley.
Red Sox 4, Brewers 3 at Boston (day game):
A single by Carlton Fisk in the bottom of the 10th gave the Red Sox a 4-3 decision over the Brewers. Jerry Remy opened with a single and Jim Rice followed with a single off third baseman Sal Bando's glove. Both runners moved up on a groundout by Fred Lynn. Dwight Evans received an intentional walk before Fisk lashed his game-winning hit to left field. The Brewers had taken a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth on a two-run homer by Ben Oglivie, but the Red Sox tied it in the bottom of the frame on a two-run homer by Evans.
Tigers 10, White Sox 2 at Chicago (day game):
Pounding four Chicago pitchers for 14 hits, the Tigers thumped the White Sox, 10-2. The Tigers got three runs in the first inning on a two-run single by Steve Kemp and an RBI single by Tim Corcoran, and picked up three more tallies in the second on a sacrifice fly by Rusty Staub and RBI singles by Jason Thompson and Kemp. Lou Whitaker hit a three-run inside-the-park round-tripper in the third frame and Staub hit a solo clout in the eighth.
[DH] Rangers 3, Indians 2 (day game) / Rangers 6, Indians 5 at Cleveland (day game):
The Rangers captured a pair of one-run decisions from the Indians, winning the first game of a doubleheader, 3-2, and taking the second contest, 6-5. The Texans grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning of the opener on a safe bunt by Kurt Bevacqua, triple by Toby Harrah and sacrifice fly by Mike Hargrove. Bevacqua led off the seventh with a round-tripper to provide the eventual winning run. After taking a 4-0 lead in the nightcap, the Rangers fell behind, 5-4, but got RBI singles from Al Oliver and Bobby Bonds in the fifth inning to pull out the victory.
[DH] Twins 3, A's 1 (day game) / Twins 2, A's 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Tight pitching by Gary Serum and Roger Erickson enabled the Twins to post a doubleheader sweep over the A's, 3-1 and 2-1. In the third, Rod Carew beat out a bunt, reached second when catcher Jim Essian threw wildly to first and tallied on a single by Cubbage. Blue Jays 3, Royals 2 at Toronto (day game):
Daring baserunning gave the Blue Jays a 3-2, 10-inning triumph over the Royals. The score was 2-2 going into the bottom of the 10th when Bob Bailor opened by drawing a base on balls and moving to second on a single by Rico Carty. Otto Velez then grounded to third baseman Jamie Quirk, who tossed to second baseman U.L. Washington for a forceout on Carty. Bailor, after reaching third, kept running and scored ahead of Washington's throw to the plate.
