Angels 5, Red Sox 2 at California (night game):
A three-run homer by Joe Rudi carried the Angels to a 5-2 triumph over the Red Sox. The Angels took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning on a two-run double by Don Baylor. In the seventh, Lyman Bostock singled and Baylor was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Rudi's round-tripper.
Twins 9, Indians 8 at Cleveland (night game):
Driving in four runs, Jose Morales led the Twins to a 9-8 victory over the Indians. The Tribe led, 8-7, going into the top of the seventh, but the Twins tied the game on a pinch-hit tingle by Rod Carew. In the next inning, Morales belted a homer over the left field fence for the game-winner.
Royals 4, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
A two-run rally in the seventh inning carried the Royals past the Tigers, 4-2. The Royals trailed, 2-1, going into the top of the seventh and tied the game when Clint Hurdle doubled and scored as left fielder Steve Kemp muffed a single by Al Cowens. A single by Freddie Patek advanced Cowens to second and a single by Steve Braun gave the Royals a 3-2 edge. Darrell Porter led off the Royal ninth with a homer for an insurance tally.
Brewers 9, Blue Jays 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
After the Brewers pounded the Blue Jays, 9-1, in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader, the second game was postponed because of rain. The Brewers scored six runs in the fourth inning. Larry Hisle opened with a walk, Cecil Cooper singled and a double by Sal Bando plated Hisle. A single by Robin Yount scored Cooper and Bando also tallied when right fielder Bob Bailor bobbled Yount's hit. Gorman Thomas greeted reliever Joe Coleman with a single and catcher Rick Cerone's throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Charlie Moore allowed Yount to score. Thomas tallied on a wild pitch before a single by Don Money capped the uprising.
Yankees 6, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
Lowering his league-leading ERA to 1.79, Ron Guidry pitched the Yankees to a 6-0 whitewashing of the A's. Thurman Munson, Chris Chambliss, Lou Piniella and Graig Nettles each drove in a run during the third inning and Reggie Jackson hit a homer in the fifth.
Orioles 7, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
Getting three runs in the first inning, the Orioles went on to a 7-4 victory over the Mariners. With one out in the opening frame, Rick Dempsey singled and moved to third on a double by Pat Kelly. A single by Ken Singleton scored both runners after a walk to Eddie Murray and single by Doug DeCinces loaded the bases. Mike Parrott relieved Glenn Abbott on the mound and committed a balk, allowing Singleton to score. A fifth-inning triple by Murray added two runs.
Rangers 1, White Sox 0 at Texas (night game):
Tossing his 13th complete game of the season, Jon Matlack pitched the Rangers to a 1-0 victory over the White Sox. The lone run came on a round-tripper by Richie Zisk that barely cleared the left field wall.
Cubs 12, Braves 8 at Chicago (day game):
Coming back from a 7-0 deficit, the Cubs outslugged the Braves, 12-8, in a wild slugfest. The Braves, led by Bob Horner's 13th homer of the season, scored seven runs in the second inning, but the Cubs rallied for five runs in the bottom of the frame and went in front in the fourth inning on a throwing error by pitcher Rick Camp and RBI singles by Ivan DeJesus and Bill Buckner. Bobby Murcer and Dave Kingman hit successive homers in the sixth stanza and Mick Kelleher scored in the same inning on a steal of home.
Expos 4, Giants 3 at Montreal (night game):
Coming from behind in the late innings, the Expos downed the Giants, 4-3. The Giants led, 3-1, going into the bottom of the eighth but the Expos tied the game on an RBI single by Warren Cromartie and a homer by Gary Carter. With two out in the ninth, Ellis Valentine smashed a round-tripper to win the game.
Mets 3, Padres 1 at New York (night game):
A double by Steve Henderson in veighth inning sparked the Mets to a 3-1 victory over the Padres. The score was 1-1 when Henderson stroked the two bagger that scored Elliott Maddox, who opened the inning with a walk. A single by Lee Mazzilli then plated Henderson with an insurance tally.
Dodgers 5, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Surviving four unearned runs, Doug Rau hurled the Dodgers to a 5-4 victory over the Phillies. The Phillies led, 4-3, going into the top of the sixth when Rick Monday tied the contest with a solo homer. The Dodgers snapped the tie in the seventh on a double by Davey Lopes, a sacrifice and a sacrifice fly by Reggie Smith.
Reds 4, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A homer by Dan Driessen in the top of the 10th inning enabled the Reds to post a 4-3 triumph over the Pirates. The Reds had tied the game with two out in the ninth. Ken Henderson walked and, after Kent Tekulve relieved Grant Jackson, Cesar Geronimo sacrificed Rick Auerbach, the pinch-runner for Henderson, to second. Pinch-hitter Johnny Bench fanned, but Pete Rose smashed a hit off the glove of second baseman Phil Garner to plate the tying tally.
Cardinals 11, Astros 5 at St. Louis (night game):
Pounding out 17 hits, the Cardinals thumped the Astros, 11-5. George Hendrick gave the Redbirds a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a home run after singles by Tony Scott and Keith Hernandez. The Cards added a pair in the third on a walk, singles by Hendrick and Jerry Morales and a balk by Joaquin Andujar. Two more tallies in the following frame on a walk, a triple by Garry Templeton and single by Scott clinched the decision.
