Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 4, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Getting two runs in the ninth without the benefit of a hit, the Red Sox walked off with a 4-2 decision over the Angels. The score was 2-2 going into the ninth when George Scott led off by drawing a base on balls. Butch Hobson laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached first base safely when pitcher Nolan Ryan bobbled the ball. Rick Burleson, attempting to bunt, popped out to Ryan, who threw to first base in an effort to get a double play. The ball got away from Bobby Grich and rolled into the Red Sox dugout, allowing Scott to score. Hobson went to third on the error. A squeeze bunt by Jerry Remy then scored Hobson.
Tigers 2, Indians 0 at Detroit (night game):
With Jack Billingham pitching his fourth shutout in a streak of six victories, the Tigers gained 2-0 decision over the Indians. Ron LeFlore scored in the first on a double by Steve Kemp and in the third on a sacrifice fly by Rusty Staub.
[DH] Brewers 8, Blue Jays 1 (night game) / Brewers 3, Blue Jays 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Pitching his 18th complete game of the season, Mike Caldwell hurled the Brewers to an 8-1 triumph over the Blue Jays in the first game of a twin bill. The Brewers completed the sweep by edging the Jays in the second game, 3-2. In the opener, the Brewers' first two runs came in the third inning on an RBI double by Larry Hisle and RBI single by Sal Bando. They added another pair in the fourth on consecutive singles by Jim Gantner, Charlie Moore and Robin Yount and a throwing error by Jays' right fielder Bob Bailor. The Brewers trailed, 1-0, going into the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap when Sixto Lezcano got a leadoff single. Pinch-runner Gorman Thomas scored the tying run on a throwing error by pitcher Balor Moore and a single by Yount. Pinch-hitter Ben Oglivie received an intentional walk and Cecil Cooper singled to load the bases. Paul Molitor then stroked a single that drove home two runs.
[DH] Twins 5, Royals 1 (night game) / Royals 11, Twins 7 at Minnesota (night game):
The Royals and Twins split a twin bill, the Twins taking the opener, 5-1, and the Royals capturing the nightcap, 11-7. In the first game, a four-run explosion in the first inning was decisive. A single by Hosken Powell, double by Roy Smalley, triple by Rod Carew and two-run homer by Glenn Adams produced the tallies. The Royals needed a five-run outburst in the ninth inning of the second game to insure victory. A double by Al Cowens and single by John Wathan each accounted for two tallies. Darrell Porter drove in the other run with a single.
Yankees 5, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
A seventh-inning leadoff home run by Bucky Dent snapped a 3-3 tie, lifting the Yankees to a 5-3 triumph over the A's. Lou Piniella drove in three runs with a pair of singles, including a hit in the seventh to plate an insurance tally. Catfish Hunter got credit for his fourth straight victory.
Mariners 7, Orioles 5 at Seattle (night game):
A pair of homers by Dave Roberts highlighted the attack as the Mariners posted a 7-5 victory over the Orioles with Byron McLaughlin gaining credit for his first major league win. Roberts hit a two-run blast in the first inning following an infield hit by Craig Reynolds. The Mariners added another tally in the second on a double by Leroy Stanton and single by Larry Milbourne. Roberts' second homer came in the fifth frame after singles by Julio Cruz and Tom Paciorek.
White Sox 6, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Making his major league debut, Ross Baumgarten got credit for the victory as the White Sox defeated the Rangers, 6-2, snapping Texas' six-game winning streak. Singles by Don Kessinger, Jorge Orta and Lamar Johnson got the White Sox rolling in the first inning and they added a run in the second on a triple by Claudell Washington and an out by Bob Molinaro. After Molinaro had an RBI single in the sixth, the White Sox broke the game open with three runs in the eighth. Washington drove in one tally with a single and Kessinger added a pair with another single.
Braves 9, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Four home runs and the three-hit pitching by Phil Niekro carried the Braves to a 9-0 thrashing of the Cubs. Jeff Burroughs hit a round-tripper in the sixth after a walk to Gary Matthews and Joe Nolan hit a solo shot in the same inning. Bob Horner clouted a two-run smash in the eighth frame and Dale Murphy smacked a bases-empty blow later in the inning.
Expos 1, Giants 0 at Montreal (night game):
A brilliant one-hitter by Woodie Fryman enabled the Expos to edge the Giants, 1-0. The only hit off the veteran lefty was a line single to center by Darrell Evans in the second inning. The Expos scored in the fourth when Tony Perez stroked a one-out single and, after Warren Cromartie struck out, Larry Parrish tripled.
Padres 2, Mets 1 at New York (day game):
A two-run homer by Derrel Thomas with two out in the ninth inning lifted the Padres to a 2-1 victory over the Mets. The Padres trailed, 1-0, going into the ninth. After Dave Winfield stroked a one-out double, Mets' starter Jerry Koosman was derricked in favor of Skip Lockwood, who got pinch-hitter Jerry Turner to foul out, but Thomas then belted ball into the right field bullpen.
Dodgers 5, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Taking sole possession of first place in the N. L. West, the Dodgers downed the Phillies, 5-2, with a grand slam by Reggie Smith supplying the power. In the third inning, Joe Ferguson and Bill Russell singled and moved up on a sacrifice by Bob Welch. Davey Lopes was intentionally walked to load the sacks and Smith then unloaded over the center field wall.
Pirates 13, Reds 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Two homers by Dave Parker and one by Bill Robinson helped power the Pirates to a 13-2 rout of the Reds. Parker blasted a two-run round-tripper in the first inning and added a three-run circuit clout in the seventh, giving him seven homers in his last nine games. With the score tied, 2-2, in the fifth and a runner on second, Parker was intentionally passed to get at Robinson. But Robinson spoiled the strategy by smashing a three-run homer.
Astros 4, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (day game):
Scoring three runs in the third inning, the Astros downed the Cardinals, 4-2. Terry Puhl led off the third with a single, took second on an errant pickoff attempt, stole third and counted on a ground out by Enos Cabell. Jose Cruz singled, stole second and tallied on a double by Bob Watson. A single by Art Howe plated Watson. Watson pulled a hamstring rounding third, limped toward the plate and collapsed as he scored. He was carried off the field on a stretcher and was expected to be lost to the team for at least three weeks.
