Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 8, Angels 6 at California (night game):
Getting two runs without the benefit of a hit in the sixth inning, the Red Sox emerged with an 8-6 victory over the Angels. The Red Sox trailed, 6-5, going into the top of the sixth when Butch Hobson opened with a base on balls. When Rick Burleson grounded to Dave Chalk, Bobby Grich dropped the throw on the attempted forceout and both runners were safe. After a sacrifice by Jerry Remy, Jim Rice walked to load the bases. Jack Brohamer then hit a grounder to Don Baylor, who stepped on first before throwing late to the plate as Hobson tallied the tying run. After Carlton Fisk walked to reload the bases, Ken Brett relieved Tom Griffin and committed a balk, allowing Burleson to score the lead run. A single by Fisk in the eighth provided an insurance tally.
Tigers 9, Indians 5 at Detroit (night game):
A grand-slam home run by Steve Kemp highlighted the Tigers' 9-5 triumph over the Indians. The big blow came in the first inning and gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead. But the Indians came back and eventually tied the score at 5-5 in the top of the third. Milt May broke the deadlock by leading off the Tigers' half of the third with a home run. May also drove in a run with a double in the sixth and Kemp lashed a two-run double in the same stanza.

After Willie Norwood popped out, Rivera advanced to second on a single by Rod Carew. Al Hrabosky then took the mound in relief of Larry Gura and gave up Ford's game-winning hit.
White Sox 4, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
A three-run third inning triggered the White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Rangers. Ralph Garr led off the third with a double and Don Kessinger followed with a bunt single. Steve Garvey then hit a triple down the right field line and scored himself on an errant relay throw from the outfield.
[DH] Pirates 5, Astros 1 (night game) / Pirates 3, Astros 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The hitting and pitching of Don Robinson lifted the Pirates to a 5-3 victory over the Astros in the first game of a doubleheader and the Bucs completed the sweep by capturing the nightcap, 3-2. Robinson drove in a run with a single in the second inning of the opener and added another with a hit in the fourth frame after Phil Garner had tripled to score Ed Ott. The Pirates trailed, 2-1, in the fourth inning of the second game when a rally began with Garner being hit by a pitch. Manny Sanguillen flied out, but second baseman Art Howe misplayed a grounder by Rennie Stennett. After a double steal, Garner and Stennett scored on a two-base hit by Steve Brye.
