Angels 3, Orioles 2 at California (night game):
Don Baylor, who had been in a homer slump, with only two since the All-Star break, stepped up to the plate in the ninth inning and hit for the circuit to carry the Angels to a 3-2 victory over the Orioles. Back-to-back homers by Eddie Murray and Doug DeCinces produced the Orioles' runs in the fourth. The Angels caught up with two out in the seventh. Baylor doubled and scored when Joe Rudi singled. Rudi raced to third on a wild pickoff attempt by Scott McGregor and counted the tying run on a single by Carney Lansford.
White Sox 7, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Hitting for the cycle in the first inning, the White Sox scored four runs en route to a 7-1 victory over the Indians. In that opening burst, Bob Molinaro led off with a single, Don Kessinger doubled and Mike Squires knocked them across with a triple. After one out, Ralph Garr completed the cycle with a homer.
Rangers 4, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Four unearned runs, resulting from two errors and a passed ball, enabled the Rangers to defeat the Royals, 4-3. In the first inning, Mike Hargrove and Jim Sundberg singled and both scored when Pete LaCock threw wildly to second after the first baseman had fielded a grounder by Al Oliver. Bobby Bonds beat out an infield hit to Freddie Patek in the fourth and continued to second on a wild throw by the shortstop. Richie Zisk struck out, but when the third strike got past catcher Darrell Porter for a passed ball, Zisk reached first and Bonds took third. John Lowenstein singled, scoring Bonds. Zisk advanced to third and scored what proved to be the winning run when Toby Harrah grounded out.
Brewers 2, Tigers 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Backed by Gorman Thomas, who hit a two-run double, Lary Sorensen pitched the Brewers to a 2-0 victory over the Tigers, extending the Milwaukee winning streak to six games. Sorensen scattered eight hits. Dave Rozema, pitching for the Tigers, allowed only five hits but was beaten when Larry Hisle singled in the second inning, Cecil Cooper walked and both scored on Thomas' double.
Twins 4, Blue Jays 3 at Minnesota (night game):
After rallying for two runs in the ninth inning to tie the game, the Twins scored again in the 10th on a single by Hosken Powell and double by Glenn Adams to defeat the Blue Jays, 4-3. Powell and Adams also figured in the Twins' ninth-inning rally. Rich Chiles walked and Adams singled. Rob Wilfong bunted and the bases became loaded when Roy Howell erred on the throw to third. Mike Cubbage forced Wilfong at second, scoring Powell, who ran for Chiles. Rod Carew then singled, driving in Adams with the tying tally.
Red Sox 6, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
Jim Rice smashed four hits, including his 30th homer, and Mike Torrez gained his 15th victory as the Red Sox defeated the A's, 6-3. Rice's homer with a man on base in the first inning raised his RBI total to 101. Rice doubled and scored on a single by Carlton Fisk in the sixth. The Red Sox then won the game with three runs in the eighth, breaking a 3-3 tie. Rice led off with a single and counted on a double by Fisk. Jack Brohamer doubled, driving in Fisk, and scored the last run on a single by Dwight Evans.
Yankees 6, Mariners 1 at Seattle (night game):
Getting four-hit pitching from Ed Figueroa, the Yankees defeated the Mariners, 6-1. Mickey Rivers, who hit safely in his 17th straight game, tripled in the third inning and scored the Yankees' initial run on a sacrifice fly by Thurman Munson. The Mariners tied the score with their lone tally in the fifth on a walk to Leroy Stanton and singles by Larry Milbourne and Bob Stinson. The Yankees broke away in the seventh when Reggie Jackson singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Bucky Dent. Two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth iced the decision, with Graig Nettles hitting a single and double to account for three RBIs.
Reds 8, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
George Foster and Johnny Bench hit back-to-back homers in the first inning and consecutive doubles in the ninth, driving in four runs between them. to power the Reds to an 8-3 victory over the Cubs. Dave Concepcion singled in the first before Foster and Bench smashed their homers to give the Reds a 3-0 lead. The Cubs came back with homers by Dave Kingman and Manny Trillo in the second and an unearned run in the fourth to tie the score, but the Reds broke away with two tainted tallies in the sixth and iced their victory with three runs in the ninth on doubles by Foster and Bench, a single by Tom Hume and a double by Pete Rose.
Padres 3, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
A spell of wildness led to the downfall of Steve Rogers when the Expos lost to the Padres, 3-2. Rogers had a 2-1 lead going into the seventh inning before Derrel Thomas and Jerry Turner singled. Rogers then walked Gene Richards to load the bases and also passed Ozzie Smith to force in the tying run. Gene Tenace followed with a sacrifice fly for the Padres' deciding run.
Dodgers 7, Mets 3 at New York (night game):
Continuing his assault on Mets' pitching, Steve Garvey hit a single and homer, driving in four runs, to lead the Dodgers to a 7-3 victory. After knocking in a run with his single in the first inning, Garvey hit his homer following singles by Tommy John and Reggie Smith in the fourth. The Dodgers' first baseman was 10-for-22 against Mets' pitching with 10 RBIs in six games.
Giants 6, Phillies 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
A two-run homer by pinch-hitter Mike Ivie with two out in the ninth inning enabled the Giants to defeat the Phillies, 6-5. Mike Schmidt, batting in the leadoff spot for the first time in his career, homered with a man on base for the Phillies in the third inning. Willie McCovey hit one for the Giants in the sixth. With the score tied, 4-4, Darrell Evans hit a double for the Giants with one out in the ninth but was trapped off second and retired on a grounder by Marc Hill. Ivie then batted for Roger Metzger and hit his ninth homer of the year and fourth as a pinch-hitter to put the Giants ahead, 6-4. In the Phillies' half, Garry Maddox knocked in a run with a double. After stealing third, Maddox also tried to steal home but was thrown out.
Pirates 6, Astros 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Before being knocked out in the sixth inning, Jim Bibby hit his first major league homer for one of the Pirates' runs in a 6-3 victory over the Astros. Dave Parker accounted for two RBIs with an infield out and a single as the Pirates built up a 4-0 lead in the first two innings. Bibby hit his round-tripper in the fourth. Jose Cruz had a homer for the Astros. After Bibby departed, the Pirates used three relief pitchers, finishing with Kent Tekulve, who picked up his 21st save.
Cardinals 5, Braves 1 at St. Louis (night game):
The league leader in earned run average, Pete Vuckovich lowered his mark to 2.17 while pitching seven innings as the Cardinals defeated the Braves, 5-1. The Cardinals clinched Vuckovich's 11th victory with four runs in the fifth inning. Wayne Garrett led off with a double and stopped at third on a single by Jerry Morales. Garrett scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Phillips. After Lou Brock walked, Garry Templeton doubled, driving in Morales. George Hendrick then capped the outburst with a single, scoring Brock and Templeton.
