Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 4, Orioles 3 at California (night game):
Continuing his hot batting, Joe Rudi drove in two runs to help the Angels gain a 4-3 victory over the Orioles. Rudi singled in one of the Angels' two tallies in the first and homered in the fourth. The circuit clout was his fifth in his last eight games and the RBI was his 22nd in his last 23 games. The Orioles had homers by Larry Harlow and Eddie Murray and tied the score at 3-3 before the Angels put over their deciding run in the seventh when Brian Downing walked and, after a forceout by Dave Chalk, Ken Landreaux and Rick Miller singled.

White Sox 2, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Handed a two-run lead in the first inning, Francisco Barrios turned in his first complete game since June 16 and pitched the White Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Indians. Bob Molinaro doubled on Mike Paxton's first pitch of the game, took third after a flyout and scored on a wild pitch. With two away, Lamar Johnson walked, stole second and when no one covered the bag on catcher Gary Alexander's throw, Johnson continued to third. Ralph Garr then singled to drive in what proved to be the winning run. Barrios struggled through the Indians' half of the first but settled down after walking Alexander with the bases loaded to force in the Tribe's tally.

Royals 3, Rangers 0 at Kansas City (day game):
After working out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the first inning, Dennis Leonard pitched the Royals to a 3-0 victory over the Rangers. Fergie Jenkins, hurling for the Rangers, did not allow a hit through the first three innings but then went down to defeat when Pete LaCock singled and Clint Hurdle homered in the fourth. The Royals' other run counted in the eighth on a double by LaCock and single by Darrell Porter.

Tigers 6, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Tigers bunched three hits with three errors for three runs in the seventh inning to gain a 6-4 victory over the Brewers, who were stopped on their six-game winning streak. The Brewers took a 2-0 lead in the first on a homer by Larry Hisle and added two runs in the sixth for a 4-3 lead before John Wockenfuss doubled in the Tigers' seventh and scored on a single by Alan Trammell. On the wild relay to plate by Robin Yount, Trammell raced to third and scored when Ron LeFlore singled. LeFlore moved to second when his hit was fumbled by Gorman Thomas, stole third and scored when Bob McClure dropped the ball covering the plate after the reliever's pitch got away from catcher Charlie Moore.

Twins 5, Blue Jays 0 at Minnesota (day game):
Gary Serum provided the right pitching medicine for the Twins with a two-hitter in a 5-0 victory over the Blue Jays. The Twins settled the issue on loser Jerry Garvin's first delivery of the game when Willie Norwood connected for a homer. A single by Rod Carew, triple by Dan Ford and single by Butch Wynegar added two runs before the inning ended. Bombo Rivera homered in the second. The Twins' last run came in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk to Ford by Blue Jay reliever Joe Coleman.

A's 8, Red Sox 4 at Oakland (day game):
The A's ended a seven-game losing streak with an 8-4 victory over the Red Sox. Bill Lee, who was knocked out in the sixth inning after giving up nine hits and five of the A's runs (four earned), was tagged with his seventh straight defeat. After Lee departed on the short end of a 5-2 score, the Red Sox counted twice on a triple by Jim Rice in the seventh, but the A's put the game away with three runs off Bill Campbell in the eighth, two unearned on a throwing error by Carlton Fisk. Rico Carty batted in two runs for the A's with a homer and an infield out.

Mariners 4, Yankees 1 at Seattle (night game):
Held to three hits by Jim Colborn, the Yankees lost to the Mariners, 4-1. Chris Chambliss homered for the Yankees' run in the second inning, but Bruce Bochte matched it with a circuit clout in the Mariners' half. The M's then went ahead in the fourth when Leon Roberts singled and Leroy Stanton doubled. Singles by Julio Cruz and Ruppert Jones around an infield out added a run in the fifth. Roberts doubled and Bob Robertson singled to close out the scoring in the eighth. Colborn ended Mickey Rivers' 17-game batting streak, holding the Yankee outfielder hitless in four trips.

Reds 9, Cubs 7 at Chicago (day game):
Helping himself to victory in relief, Tom Hume batted in the deciding two runs when the Reds scored three times in the 10th inning to defeat the Cubs, 9-7. George Foster hit a two-run homer for the Reds in the first. After getting a three-run drive by Bill Buckner in the third, the Cubs held a 6-3 lead going into the ninth when the Reds rallied to the tie score off Bruce Sutter. Mike Lum doubled, Joe Morgan singled to make it 6-4 and Ken Griffey followed with a two-run homer to knot the count. In the 10th, Dan Driessen singled and was forced by Johnny Bench, who scored on singles by Dave Concepcion and Lum. Lynn McGlothen, replacing Sutter, then yielded Hume's two-run single and the reliever's hit proved decisive when the Cubs counted once in their half.

Padres 3, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Randy Jones pitched the first seven innings and Rollie Fingers finished, picking up his 28th save, as the Padres defeated the Expos, 3-2. The Expos' runs came off Jones in the second and were unearned on wild throws by Fernando Gonzalez and Ozzie Smith. The Padres' tying tallies in the fifth also were tainted, scoring on an error by Larry Parrish, a triple by Smith and single by Derrel Thomas. The Padres then counted the only earned run of the game in the sixth and Jones supplied it himself with a single after a pass to Gene Tenace and single by Gonzalez.

Mets 8, Dodgers 4 at New York (day game):
Capitalizing on an error by Bill Russell, the Mets scored four runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Dodgers, 8-4. With the game tied, 3-3, John Stearns opened the Mets' sixth with a double off Don Sutton, who proceeded to load the bases by walking Bruce Boisclair and Doug Flynn with one out. Ron Hodges hit a pop fly and when Russell dropped the ball in short left field, Stearns scored. Sutton then walked himself out of the game, passing Lee Mazzilli to force in Boisclair. Charlie Hough then took over and retired Tim Foli, but Steve Henderson singled to drive in two runs.

Phillies 3, Giants 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Although tagged for 10 hits, Steve Carlton kept them scattered and pitched the Phillies to a 3-0 victory over the Giants. Mike Schmidt led off the Phillies' first inning with a homer. Two other runs that helped the Phillies break their five-game losing streak counted in the fifth on a single by Bake McBride, double by Tim McCarver and single by Carlton.

Pirates 4, Astros 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
After the baserunning of Frank Taveras helped the Pirates beat the Astros, 4-2, in the first game of a scheduled twi-night doubleheader, the second game was postponed because of rain. Taveras walked in the third, stole second and third and counted on an infield out by Manny Sanguillen. Then in the seventh, Taveras singled, stole second and scored again on a single by Phil Garner. Bert Blyleven handcuffed the Astros until knocked out in the ninth. Grant Jackson retired one batter before giving way to Kent Tekulve, who finished the game and gained his 22nd save.

Braves 3, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Undefeated since joining the Braves, Larry McWilliams gained his sixth straight victory, pitching a four-hitter and shutting out the Cardinals, 3-0. The complete game, however, was the first for the lefthander since coming up from Richmond (International) in mid-July. Bob Forsch suffered his ninth straight defeat. In those nine losses, the Cardinals had scored a total of only 13 runs for Forsch.
