White Sox 4, Royals 1 at Chicago (night game):
A pair of doubles by Eric Soderholm carried the White Sox to a 4-1 triumph over the Royals. Soderholm's first two-bagger came in the fourth inning following a triple by Ralph Garr. In the sixth, Soderholm doubled in two more tallies after singles by Mike Squires and Lamar Johnson. In the eighth, Don Kessinger singled, stole second and scored on a single by Johnson.
Tigers 5, Blue Jays 2 at Detroit (night game):
A triple by Lou Whitaker was the big blow as the Tigers beat the Blue Jays, 5-2, snapping Toronto's club record five-game winning streak. The score was 1-1 going into the bottom of the third when Alan Trammell and Ron LeFlore stroked singles. Whitaker slammed a triple and continued home without stopping when right fielder Otto Velez had trouble picking up the ball and was charged with an error.
Indians 9, Brewers 8 at Milwaukee (day game):
A leadoff homer by Andre Thornton in the 11th inning capped a comeback by the Indians, giving them a 9-8 victory over the Brewers. The Tribe trailed at one stage, 8-3, but rallied and eventually tied the game in the ninth. In that inning, Thornton and Gary Alexander walked, Ron Pruitt sacrificed and Duane Kuiper grounded out, scoring Thornton. Alexander had a two-run single in the third and a three-run homer in the seventh.
Rangers 4, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
A three-run homer by Jim Sundberg in the 10th inning carried the Rangers to a 4-1 victory over the Twins. The game was 1-1 entering the 10th when Al Oliver opened with a single, Bobby Bonds beat out a bunt and Richie Zisk sacrificed to set the stage for Sundberg's drive into the right-center bullpen.
Pirates 5, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
The rampaging Pirates posted their 10th straight victory, defeating the Braves, 5-1. The game was scoreless going into the seventh inning when Dave Parker led off with a walk and raced to third on a single by Willie Stargell. Parker was out at the plate on a grounder by Ed Ott, Bill but Robinson followed with a single, scoring Stargell. Phil Garner smashed a double, driving in Ott. After Dale Berra was intentionally walked to load the bases, winning pitcher Bert Blyleven doubled to left for three more markers.
Cardinals 4, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
A two-run single by Mike Phillips was the key hit as the Cardinals edged the slumping Reds, 4-3. In the third inning, Jerry Mumphrey drew a leadoff walk, stole second and went to third on an infield out. After Ted Simmons was intentionally walked, Keith Hernandez doubled home Mumphrey. An intentional walk to Ken Reitz loaded the bases and set the stage for Phillips' two-run single. Reds' starter Paul Moskau pitched only the opening frame and gave up a homer by George Hendrick before being forced to leave because of shoulder stiffness.
Dodgers 5, Phillies 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
A three-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Dodgers to a 5-4 triumph over the Phillies. The Dodgers trailed, 4-2, going into the bottom of the eighth but tied the score on a single by Ron Cey, double by Dusty Baker and two-run single by Bill Russell, who advanced to second on the throw to plate. Rick Monday was announced as a pinch-hitter for Tommy John, but when Tug McGraw replaced Warren Brusstar on the mound for the Phils, Manny Mota pinch-hit for Monday and delivered the game-winning hit off third baseman Mike Schmidt's glove. It was the 130th pinch hit of Mota's career.
Mets 6, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Driving in two runs apiece, Joel Youngblood and John Stearns sparked the Mets to a 6-3 victory over the Padres. The Mets got three runs in the third inning on a two-run double by Stearns and sacrifice fly by Youngblood. In the fifth, a double by Willie Montanez and intentional walk to Stearns set the stage for a run-scoring double by Youngblood. The final run was plated on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Valentine.
