Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Mariners 0 at Baltimore (night game):
After 6 2/3 hitless innings, Dennis Martinez yielded a pair of singles while pitching the Orioles to a 5-0 victory over the Mariners. Bill Stein got the first hit off Martinez and Ruppert Jones added a single in eighth. A double by Doug DeCinces and homer by Lee May in the fourth provided more than enough runs for Martinez to win.

Red Sox 6, Angels 0 at Boston (night game):
Continuing his unblemished record at home, Dennis Eckersley won his eighth straight game at Fenway Park and recorded a career-high 15th victory with a shutout as the Red Sox beat the Angels, 6-0. Jim Rice singled and scored on a double by Carlton Fisk in the first inning and smashed his 32nd homer in the third.

Indians 2, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
An unearned run in the fourth inning enabled the Indians to defeat the White Sox. 2-1, for only their second victory in eight games between the clubs this season. The Indians counted their initial tally in the first on a walk to Jim Norris, a sacrifice and a single by Buddy Bell. The White Sox retaliated with a run in their half on a pass to Ralph Garr, a sacrifice and a double by Mike Squires. However, Garr was the goat in the fourth, dropping a fly by Andre Thornton for a two-base error. Thornton then scored the deciding run on a single by Gary Alexander.

Tigers 6, Brewers 3 at Detroit (night game):
A homer by Ron LeFlore with two men on base in the second inning proved decisive as the Tigers defeated the Brewers, 6-3. A walk to John Wockenfuss and singles by Aurelio Rodriguez and Alan Trammell produced one run before LeFlore whacked his drive into the right-center field stands, about 430 feet from home plate. Cecil Cooper hit a two-run homer for the Brewers.

Yankees 7, A's 1 at New York (night game):
Reggie Jackson boosted his career RBI total to 1,001 with a grand-slam homer as the Yankees trounced the A's, 7-1. Mickey Rivers hit two solo shots. With the score tied, 1-1, Willie Randolph opened the Yankee sixth with a single and both Lou Piniella and Graig Nettles walked to set the stage for Jackson's second slam of the season and seventh of his career. Ron Guidry gained his 18th victory, pitching eight innings before yielding the mound to Rich Gossage.

Rangers 7, Royals 2 at Texas (night game):
A grand-slam by Richie Zisk climaxed a six-run rally in the sixth inning and powered the Rangers to a 7-2 victory over the Royals. Two were out in the sixth with Royals leading, 2-0, when Mike Hargrove singled. Bump Wills walked and Kurt Bevacqua doubled, driving in Hargrove. After an intentional pass to Al Oliver, Rich Gale also walked Bobby Bonds to force in the tying tally. Zisk then came to the plate and delivered his jackpot wallop. Darrell Porter homered to account for the Royals' runs off Jon Matlack, who pitched a five-hitter.

Blue Jays 7, Twins 3 at Toronto (day game):
Hitting a homer and two doubles, Al Woods drove in four runs to pace the Blue Jays to a 7-3 victory over the Twins. The Blue Jays settled the issue quickly with four runs in the first inning. With one out, Bob Bailor singled, took third on a single by Roy Howell and scored when Willie Horton forced Howell. John Mayberry then singled and Woods followed with a three-run homer. Woods added his fourth RBI with a double in the eighth. Since this was the only day game on the schedule, it was the first to be affected by the strike of umpires. Coaches Jerry Zimmerman of the Twins and Don Leppert of the Blue Jays worked at second and third bases, helping two amateur umpires, before they were replaced in the second inning by a third umpire from the Toronto Area Junior Baseball League.

Cardinals 11, Braves 10 at Atlanta (night game):
The Cardinals continued their belated surge of winning baseball by outslugging the Braves, 11-10, for their 15th victory in the last 20 games. George Hendrick was the Cards' chief gunner, driving in seven runs with a single, double and two homers, one of them a grand slam. Bob Horner almost matched Hendrick's slugging, accounting for five of the Braves' runs with two homers. Joe Nolan hit a triple with the bases loaded. The Cards, after taking a 10-8 lead, added a run in ninth inning on a double by Mike Phillips and single by Ted Simmons. That proved decisive because Horner homered with a man on base in the Braves' half.

Cubs 5, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Helping himself by driving in three runs, Rick Reuschel pitched seven innings in the Cubs' 5-2 victory and gained his eighth straight decision over the Reds, including one in 1976, three in '77 and four this year. Reuschel knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the second inning and added another RBI with a sacrifice in the fourth when the Cubs racked up two more tallies.

Astros 7, Pirates 5 at Houston (night game):
The Pirates' 10-game winning streak, longest in N.L. this season, came to an end with a 7-5 loss to the Astros. The Pirates held a 3-2 lead before Jimmy Sexton, batting only .183, tied the score with his second career homer in the fourth inning. The Astros broke the deadlock in the next inning when Enos Cabell drove in two runs with a triple and scored himself on a sacrifice fly by Art Howe. Joaquin Andujar, who normally starts for the Astros, came out of the bullpen in the ninth and saved the game after the Pirates had scored on a triple by Phil Garner and single by Dale Berra.

Dodgers 6, Phillies 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Rallying for two runs in the ninth inning, the Dodgers defeated the Phillies, 6-5, in a game that brought Don Sutton and Steve Garvey together in the lineup for the first time since their clubhouse brawl August 20. Garvey drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and homered with a man on base in the fifth. Rick Monday also homered for the Dodgers. Bake McBride and Bob Boone rapped round-trippers for the Phillies. McBride also had a triple and drove in three runs. Sutton left after eight innings and Lance Rautzhan was the winner. The Dodgers opened their rally with a single by Reggie Smith. After Garvey flied out, Ron Cey was hit by a pitch. Dusty Baker singled, scoring Smith. Ted Martinez, running for Cey, stopped at second. Following a popup by Monday, Jerry Grote singled and Martinez slid home with the Dodgers' winning run.

Mets 2, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Winning for the sixth straight time, Craig Swan also drove in the deciding run while pitching the Mets to a 2-1 victory over the Padres. The Mets counted their pair off Gaylord Perry in the second inning. Steve Henderson tripled and scored on a single by Lenny Randle. After stopping at third when Doug Flynn hit a bloop double, Randle crossed the plate as Swan grounded out. Dave Winfield homered in the eighth for the Padres' run.

Expos 8, Giants 5 at San Francisco (night game):
Three homers, including the first of Dan Schatzeder's major league career, helped power the Expos to an 8-5 victory over the Giants. Schatzeder, who also singled, drove in three runs before the rookie lefthander was lifted with one out in the seventh inning. The Expos had to call on three relievers, with the save going to Stan Bahnsen. Darrell Evans produced the Giants' first three runs with a pair of homers, but with score tied, 3-3, the Expos broke away in the seventh. Andre Dawson and Ellis Valentine smashed back-to-back homers and another run followed in the same inning on singles by Tony Perez, Gary Carter and Chris Speier.
