Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 6, A's 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Extending their winning streak to eight games, the Orioles defeated the A's, 6-2. The Birds finished the season series against the A's with an 11-0 mark. It marked the second time in A.L. history that a team won all its games with another club. In 1970, Baltimore beat Kansas City 12 times without losing. A four-run third inning ignited the Oriole victory. Rich Dauer led off with a single and after Mark Belanger walked, Larry Harlow's bunt was fielded by A's pitcher Mike Norris, who flipped the ball past third base and ran headfirst into Dauer, who was coming home. Norris suffered shoulder, neck, rib and groin injuries in the collision and was replaced by Pete Broberg. Dauer was allowed to score due to obstruction by Norris. After Ken Singleton drove in Belanger, Lee May capped the rally with a two-run single.
Red Sox 10, Mariners 5 at Boston (night game):
A bases-loaded homer by George Scott highlighted the Red Sox' 10-5 pounding of the Mariners. The Red Sox got four runs in the first inning on a single by Jim Rice, doubles by Carlton Fisk and Carl Yastrzemski and two Mariner errors. Rice's blast came in the fifth frame and followed a walk to Fisk, single by Fred Lynn and an error by A's pitcher Glenn Abbott. Rice knocked in the fifth run of the inning with a single.
Brewers 6, Indians 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Rookie righthander Andy Replogle pitched his first major league shutout in the Brewers' 6-0 victory over the Indians. Buck Martinez had a solo homer in the third inning, his first round-tripper in more than a year, and Don Money hit a three-run homer in the fifth, following a walk to Gorman Thomas and single by Martinez.
Tigers 4, Twins 2 at Detroit (night game):
Scoring all their runs in the fourth inning, the Tigers posted a 4-2 victory over the Twins. An error by first baseman Rod Carew on a grounder by Milt May started the fourth for the Tigers and Tim Corcoran followed with a single. One out later, Alan Trammell tied the game at 1-1 with a single. Ron LeFlore, extending his hitting streak to 20 games, singled to put the Tigers ahead. Lou Whitaker struck out, but Rusty Staub then drilled a two-run double.
White Sox 9, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Getting credit for his third consecutive victory, Mike Proly limited Kansas City to three singles in 6 1/3 innings as the White Sox downed the Royals, 9-3. The righthander was forced to leave the game in the seventh stanza when he was hit on the right thumb by a line drive off the bat of Darrell Porter and suffered a hairline fracture. Lamar Johnson started the Pale Hose off with an RBI single in the first inning. The White Sox picked up two more runs in the fourth on a triple by Chet Lemon and double by Mike Colbern. Don Kessinger hit a two-run double in the seventh.
Yankees 4, Angels 3 at New York (night game):
A single by Paul Blair drove home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Yankees prevailed over the Angels, 4-3. Graig Nettles opened the 11th with a double and after Chris Chambliss sacrificed the runner to third, Lou Piniella and Cliff Johnson drew intentional walks. Blair then hit a long fly over the head of center fielder Ken Landreaux. The Angels had tied the score in the top of the ninth on a two-out homer by Joe Rudi.
Blue Jays 4, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Balor Moore scattered five hits and pitched the Blue Jays to a 4-1 victory over the Rangers. The Jays scored in the first inning on an RBI single by Doug Ault. Otto Velez blasted a two-run homer in the third and the final tally came in the seventh on an RBI single by Willie Horton.
Braves 4, Cubs 3 at Atlanta (night game):
A three-run homer by Gary Matthews lifted the Braves to a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. The Braves trailed, 3-1, going into the bottom of the seventh inning when Jerry Royster drew a one-out walk and Bob Beall singled to kayo Cub starter Rick Reuschel. Lynn McGlothen relieved and was greeted by Matthews' homer.
Pirates 5, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
The pitching of Bert Blyleven and hitting of Willie Stargell carried the Pirates to a 5-0 blanking of the Reds. Stargell batted in a run with a single in the first inning, plated another with a single in the third and belted a solo homer in the eighth.
Astros 6, Cardinals 3 at Houston (night game):
Pitching his first complete game since 1975, Ken Forsch hurled the Astros to a 6-3 decision over the Cardinals. Denny Walling drove in three runs for the Astros, one with a grounder to break a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and two more with a single in the eighth. Ted Simmons hit a solo homer for the Cards in the fourth.
Dodgers 4, Expos 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A three-run homer by Joe Ferguson propelled the Dodgers to a 4-1 victory over the Expos. In the fourth inning, Reggie Smith walked and was forced at second by Steve Garvey. Ron Cey stroked a single and Ferguson then belted his 13th homer of the season.
Phillies 9, Padres 5 at San Diego (night game):
Four RBIs by Jerry Martin and three by Garry Maddox led the attack as the Phillies thumped the Padres, 9-5. Martin slugged a homer in the first inning, delivered a sacrifice fly in the second and lined a two-run triple in the fifth. Maddox singled a run home in the third and two more in the fifth. Jose Cardenal stole home for the Phillies, marking the first time in eight seasons that a Phillie player had accomplished that feat.
Giants 2, Mets 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Posting his fourth shutout of the season, Bob Knepper pitched the Giants to a 2-0 victory over the Mets. Jim Dwyer hit a solo homer in the first inning. The other run came in the sixth when Roger Metzger singled, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Bill Madlock.
