Yankees 5, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (night game):
With Ron Guidry picking up his 19th win -- tops in the majors -- the Yankees posted their sixth straight victory, edging the Orioles, 5-4. The score was 4-4 going into the seventh inning when Lou Piniella drew a leadoff walk. A single by Chris Chambliss moved Piniella to third and a single by Cliff Johnson drove him home. Guidry was removed from the game when he was struck by a bat that slipped from the hands of Ken Singleton in the eighth inning.

[DH] Red Sox 2, Blue Jays 1 (night game) / Blue Jays 7, Red Sox 6 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox won the opening game of a twi-night doubleheader, 2-1, but lost the second game, 7-6, when the Blue Jays scored two unearned runs in the eighth inning. The first run in the lidlifter came in the fifth on a triple by George Scott and groundout by Butch Hobson. The winning marker came across in the sixth when Garry Hancock drew a two-out walk, Scott singled and Hobson doubled. After Jim Rice's second homer of the game in the seventh stanza gave the Red Sox a 6-5 lead in the nightcap, the Jays counted their tainted tallies after Rick Cerone reached first base safely on an error by Hobson and advanced to second on a single by Al Woods. After a forceout, a two-out double by Bob Bailor for his fourth hit of the game scored both Woods and Luis Gomez. Rookie Victor Cruz pitched three scoreless innings of relief to get the win.

Royals 12, White Sox 0 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals unleashed a 15-hit attack to back the five-hit pitching of Larry Gura in a 12-0 blasting of the White Sox. Darrell Porter led the assault with four hits and four runs batted in. The Royals sent 11 men to the plate and scored six runs in the second inning. Amos Otis singled in two runs, Frank White knocked in two others with a double and Pete LaCock and Porter each accounted for one with a single.

Braves 6, Cubs 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Undefeated rookie southpaw Larry McWilliams posted his seventh straight victory as the Braves defeated the Cubs, 6-2. After a two-run homer by Dave Kingman had given the Cubs a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning, the Braves came back in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Jerry Royster walked, went to third on a single by Bob Beall and scored on a single by Gary Matthews. A single by Jeff Burroughs moved Beall to third and Bob Horner then ripped an RBI single off pitcher Ray Burris' glove. The Braves picked up three more in the fifth, aided by two wild pitches by Burris and a two-run double by Beall off Willie Hernandez.

Cardinals 4, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Snapping his personal nine-game losing streak, Bob Forsch pitched a four-hitter as the Cardinals topped the Astros, 4-2. All Redbird runs came in the sixth inning. A single by Garry Templeton and walk to George Hendrick put two runners aboard. The next two batters went out, but Ken Reitz then stroked a two-run single and Jerry Mumphrey followed with a homer.

Dodgers 4, Expos 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Rallying from a 3-0 deficit, the Dodgers edged the Expos, 4-3. The Dodgers tied the score in the eighth inning with a single by Bill North and homers by Reggie Smith and Ron Cey. In the ninth, North stroked a two-out single and advanced to second on Expo pitcher Wayne Twitchell's wild throw on a pickoff attempt. After a walk to Smith, Steve Garvey lined a 2-1 pitch to center for the game-winning hit.

Phillies 6, Padres 5 at San Diego (night game):
Three RBIs by Garry Maddox enabled the Phillies to snare a 6-5 victory over the Padres. The center fielder tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh inning with a two-run single and then doubled home the winning marker in the ninth frame. With one out in the ninth, Richie Hebner got his fourth single of the night and moved to second on a groundout by Bob Boone.

Mets 10, Giants 4 at San Francisco (day game):
A homer, three singles and three RBIs by Lee Mazzilli paced a 16-hit attack as the Mets routed the Giants, 10-4. Willie Montanez also drove in three runs with a homer. Lenny Randle had a triple and three singles accounting for two RBIs. Craig Swan, scattering nine hits over the first eight innings, got credit for his seventh straight victory.
