Yankees 6, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
The Yankees extended their winning streak to seven games with a 6-2 victory over the Orioles. Trailing, 2-0, going into the sixth inning, the Yankees rallied for three runs. A single by Cliff Johnson and double by Bucky Dent produced one tally. Dent reached third when pitcher Scott McGregor missed the cutoff throw from the outfield and scored on a double by Mickey Rivers. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, Rivers scored the go-ahead run when third baseman Doug DeCinces kicked away a pickoff throw. Lou Piniella led off the seventh with a home run and the Yanks added a pair of tallies in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Jim Spencer and single by Dent.
[DH] Brewers 1, Indians 0 (night game) / Indians 12, Brewers 6 at Cleveland (night game):
A winner for the 17th time this season, Mike Caldwell hurled the Brewers to a 1-0 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Indians came back to capture the second game, 12-6. The only run of the lidlifter came on a homer by Ben Oglivie in the second inning. A three-run homer by Andre Thornton started the Indians off to their second-game triumph. The blast came in the first frame and followed a single by Paul Dade and walk to Buddy Bell. A leadoff homer by Ron Pruitt and consecutive doubles by Larvell Blanks and Rick Manning chased Brewer starter Bill Travers in the fourth. A double by Tom Veryzer and single by Bell then capped the five-run inning.
Twins 4, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
Home runs by Rich Chiles and Glenn Adams powered the Twins to a 4-1 victory over the Tigers. Chiles broke the scoreless tie with his first round-tripper of the season in the fifth inning. In the seventh, Roy Smalley smacked a leadoff double and, two outs later, Adams connected for the circuit. The Twins' final run came in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Bombo Rivera.
Padres 6, Expos 1 at San Diego (night game):
Although needing relief help from Mark Lee, Eric Rasmussen got credit for his 14th win of the season as the Padres bested the Expos, 6-1. In the first inning, Gene Richards singled, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Jerry Turner. In the third frame, Ozzie Smith walked and scored on a double by Turner. The Padres picked up three runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Tucker Ashford, Dave Winfield and Gene Tenace.
Reds 11, Cardinals 6 at St. Louis (night game):
Ending a six-game losing streak, the Reds thumped the Cardinals, 11-6. Victory was assured with a seven-run second inning. The bombardment was ignited by a leadoff homer by George Foster. Singles by Dan Driessen and Johnny Bench and a hit batsman loaded the bases. Ray Knight and Dave Concepcion stroked RBI singles and Joe Morgan clouted a three-run homer. The final tally of the frame came when Ken Griffey singled, moved to second on a balk by reliever Tom Bruno and scored on a single by Foster. Wayne Garrett hit a pinch grand slam for the Cardinals in the ninth.
