Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 2, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
A two-run homer by Carl Yastrzemski enabled Luis Tiant to top Dennis Martinez in a two-hit pitching duel and give the Red Sox a 2-0 triumph over the Orioles. The round-tripper came in the seventh inning and was preceded by a walk to Jim Rice. The shutout was the 47th of his career for Tiant.

[DH] Rangers 11, Angels 5 (night game) / Rangers 9, Angels 2 at California (night game):
The Rangers pounded out 21 hits, collected 17 walks and stole eight bases in a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Angels, 11-5 and 9-2. A five-run seventh inning secured the first game. Juan Beniquez led off with a single and after a sacrifice bunt, Al Oliver was walked intentionally. Beniquez and Oliver executed a double steal while Bobby Bonds was striking out. Richie Zisk then hit a single to score both runners and send Nolan Ryan to the showers. Dyar Miller relieved and walked Jim Sundberg before Toby Harrah cracked a three-run homer to cap the inning. In the nightcap, Harrah singled home two runs when the Rangers scored three times in the opening inning. In the third frame, the Rangers capitalized on five walks, a two-run double by John Ellis, single by Bonds and error by third baseman Carney Lansford to score five runs.

White Sox 1, Twins 0 at Minnesota (night game):
A five-hitter by Ken Kravec carried the White Sox to a 1-0 whitewashing of the Twins. The lone run of the game came in the fifth inning on a double by Chet Lemon and single by Greg Pryor.

Yankees 8, Tigers 2 at New York (night game):
Capitalizing on three errors for four unearned runs, the Yankees picked up their 12th victory in the last 14 games, beating the Tigers, 8-2. Tiger second baseman Lou Whitaker fumbled a grounder in the fourth inning and dropped a pop fly in the sixth that resulted in three unearned runs. The Yankees sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth. Singles by Bucky Dent and Mickey Rivers, a sacrifice bunt by Willie Randolph and intentional pass to Thurman Munson loaded the bases before Ron LeFlore dropped Chris Chambliss' fly to deep center for a two-run error. A single by Graig Nettles and double by Lou Piniella ended the rally.

Royals 11, A's 8 at Oakland (day game):
Coming back from a 7-0 deficit, the Royals scored an 11-8 triumph over the A's in 12 innings. The score was 8-8 going into the 12th when U.L. Washington started the winning rally by drawing a base on balls. After Hal McRae forced Washington at second and was replaced by Willie Wilson, John Wathan singled and Darrell Porter walked to load the bases. Dave Heaverlo was relieved on the mound by Elias Sosa. Al Cowens got a bloop single for one run and, one out later, a single by Amos Otis plated two more. The Royals had tied the contest in the ninth on a two-out triple by Frank White and infield single by Steve Braun.

Brewers 7, Blue Jays 0 at Toronto (night game):
The Brewers breezed past the Blue Jays, 7-0, as Lary Sorensen fired a four-hitter and Robin Yount slugged a pair of two-run homers and an RBI single. Yount's first round-tripper came in the fourth inning and drove in Sal Bando, who had singled. Yount followed a sixth-inning double by Bando with his single and homered again in the eighth after a double by Larry Hisle.

Padres 5, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
The hitting of Jerry Turner sparked the Padres to a 5-3 decision over the Braves. The San Diego left fielder, who earlier hit a two-run homer, singled home pinch-runner Ozzie Smith with the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning. Oscar Gamble led off the Padre eighth with a pinch-single and was replaced by Smith, who advanced to second on a single by Barry Evans. Turner then followed with a liner up the middle. A double-play grounder eventually scored Evans with an insurance tally.

Phillies 8, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Supporting Steve Carlton's seven-hit pitching with a 13-hit attack, the Phillies held on to first place in the N. L. East by downing the Cubs, 8-1. Mike Schmidt was the batting star, driving in four runs, one with a double and three with a homer. Schmidt's double scored Richie Hebner for the Phillies' first run in the second inning. His homer came in the following frame after singles by Larry Bowa and Hebner.

Dodgers 9, Giants 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
Extending their lead in N. L. West to three games, the Dodgers romped over the Giants, 9-2, as Joe Ferguson and Ron Cey attacked with home runs. Cey's blast came after a single by Steve Garvey in the second inning. Ferguson's round-tripper came in the fifth following a single by Cey and walk to Rick Monday. Ferguson also had a pair of doubles and Cey added a pair of singles to help Doug Rau gain his 13th victory.

Expos 8, Mets 2 at Montreal (night game):
In a game called with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning because of rain, Montreal copped an 8-2 decision over the Mets, giving the Expos their longest winning streak of the season -- five games. The Expos took a 3-1 lead in the fourth frame on doubles by Andre Dawson, Ellis Valentine and Warren Cromartie and a single by Larry Parrish. Parrish also doubled home two more runs in the sixth stanza.

Pirates 4, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Extending their winning streak to 11 games -- longest in the league this season -- the Pirates trumped the Cardinals, 4-1, as rookie righthander Don Robinson got credit for his seventh straight victory. Ed Ott led off the second inning with a double, moved to third on a double by Bill Robinson and scored on a groundout by John Milner. Phil Garner hit sacrifice fly to plate Robinson. The Bucs upped their margin to 3-0 in the fifth on successive one-out singles by Omar Moreno, Dave Parker and Willie Stargell.
