Today's scores and summaries:
Yankees 15, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
Drawing first blood in their crucial four-game series, the Yankees unleashed a 21-hit barrage to stomp the Red Sox, 15-3, moving the New Yorkers within three games of first place in the A. L. East. The Yankees jumped on loser Mike Torrez for two runs in the first inning, one on a single by Reggie Jackson in his first at-bat in three days. In the second, the Yankees added three more run on five singles and a walk, then collected another pair in the third on a double by Lou Piniella, a bunt and two singles, one by Willie Randolph, who batted in five runs. A double by Randolph capped a five-run fourth in which 10 men came to the plate. Roy White also singled home two runs in the inning. Thurman Munson went 3-for-3 before being hit in the head by a Dick Drago pitch in the sixth inning. Catfish Hunter left after three innings because of a groin strain and Ken Clay picked up an easy victory in relief.
Angels 7, Rangers 6 at California (night game):
Held to one hit in the first five innings, the Angels erupted for seven runs in the sixth and beat the Rangers, 7-6. Ranger starter Doc Medich was breezing with a 6-0 lead when consecutive singles by Bobby Grich, Jim Anderson and Rick Miller loaded the bases in the sixth. A groundout by Carney Lansford chased one run home and a single by Lyman Bostock plated two more and sent Medich to the showers. Reliever Reggie Cleveland was greeted by a home run off the bat of Don Baylor. Joe Rudi then stroked a single and Ron Fairly followed with a homer over the right field fence.
Mariners 5, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
A four-run explosion in the ninth inning carried the Mariners to a 5-3 triumph over the White Sox. The Mariners trailed, 3-1, going into the ninth and got their first run on a one-out homer by Bruce Bochte. One out later, Dan Meyer singled to center and scored on a triple by Bill Stein. Bob Stinson then belted a home run to score Stein and cap the winning rally.
Blue Jays 5, Brewers 4 at Toronto (night game):
A two-run homer by Rick Cerone in the eighth inning lifted the Blue Jays to a 5-4 triumph over the Brewers. The Jays trailed, 4-3, with nobody on and two out in the eighth when Dave McKay stroked a single. Cerone followed with his third round-tripper of the year to give reliever Victor Cruz his seventh win in eight decisions.
Braves 6, Giants 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Coming from behind in the late innings, the Braves dealt a staggering blow to San Francisco's pennant hopes by edging the sagging Giants, 6-5. The score was 5-5 going into the bottom of the eighth inning when Dale Murphy drew a leadoff walk. Two outs later, after a walk to pinch-hitter Jerry Royster, Murphy scored on a single by Glenn Hubbard. The Braves had tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Bob Beall and two-run single by Gary Matthews.
Phillies 5, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
A sacrifice fly by Ted Sizemore drove in the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning as the Phillies posted a 5-3 victory over the Cubs. Mike Schmidt walked and moved to third on a single by Bob Boone before Sizemore delivered his fly to center. The Phils picked up an insurance marker in the ninth on an error by Larry Biittner as the Cubs suffered their fifth straight loss.
Reds 6, Padres 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Home runs by Ken Griffey, Johnny Bench and Pete Rose powered the Reds to a 6-2 victory over the Padres. Griffey's clout came in the third inning and followed a single by Paul Moskau and walk to Rose. One out later, Bench hit a bases-empty round-tripper. Rose's homer was an inside-the-park affair in the fourth inning with Cesar Geronimo on base via a single. Rose's blow carried only about 200 feet in the air but took a high bounce over the head of left fielder Gene Richards and rolled to the wall.
Dodgers 3, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
A pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Vic Davalillo snapped a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning and lifted the Dodgers to a 3-2 triumph over the Astros. Dusty Baker walked to lead off the eighth, was sacrificed to second by Rick Monday, advanced to third on a single by Joe Ferguson and scored when Davalillo lofted a fly ball to center. Burt Hooton, hurling the first seven innings, got credit for his sixth straight victory and 10th in his last 11 decisions.
Mets 9, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Getting all their runs in the first three innings, the Mets breezed to a 9-4 decision over the Expos. Five of the Mets' runs came in the second. Joel Youngblood homered and after a single by Elliott Maddox and walk to Steve Henderson, Willie Montanez also hit for the circuit.
Cardinals 5, Pirates 4 at St. Louis (night game):
A two-run homer by Ted Simmons in the eighth inning lifted the Cardinals to a 5-4 victory and ended the Pirates' 11-game winning streak. Dave Parker hit a two-run homer to help the Pirates take a 3-1 lead. The Cardinals rallied to tie the score in the seventh on a walk to Keith Hernandez, triple by pinch-hitter Ken Reitz and sacrifice fly by Mike Tyson. Then, with two out in the eighth, George Hendrick singled and Simmons followed with his round-tripper. Over-aggressive baserunning by the Pirates hurt their cause. Three runners were thrown out stealing and three others were nailed attempting to advance an extra base on hits.
