Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 13, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
Cracking defensively, the Red Sox committed seven errors and suffered a 13-2 defeat at the hands of the Yankees, who moved within two games of the first-place leaders in the East division. The victory was the Yankees' 19th in the last 24 games and their second straight shellacking of the Red Sox, who lost for the sixth time in the last eight games. After counting twice with the aid of two errors in the first inning, the Yankees sent 11 men to the plate in the second and scored six runs, including a homer by Reggie Jackson with two men on base. Lou Piniella added a round-tripper in the fifth. Jim Beattie held the Red Sox scoreless until two out in the ninth when Mike Heath dropped a foul popup by Carlton Fisk, leading to two unearned runs. Ron Davis relieved and got the final out. Mickey Rivers and Piniella had three hits apiece.

Royals 9, Angels 7 at California (night game):
the Royals rallied for five runs in the eighth inning and posted a 9-7 victory to move 3½ games ahead of the Angels in the West division race. The Royals began their scoring with three runs in the sixth on a homer by Hal McRae, double by Pete LaCock and homer by Darrel Porter, but the Angels held a 4-3 lead before the Royals erupted in the eighth. John Wathan singled, Porter doubled and both scored on a single by Amos Otis. After two walks, Jerry Terrell singled to drive in Otis. Willie Wilson then beat out an infield hit to Ron Jackson and when the first baseman fell down, two more runs scored. The Angels fell short with a three-run homer by Lyman Bostock in their half of the eighth before Al Cowens added a Royals' insurance marker with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

White Sox 3, Mariners 2 at Chicago (night game):
Hitting his first two major league homers, Greg Pryor drove in all the runs for the White Sox in a 3-2 victory over the Mariners. The rookie second baseman accounted for the initial run with a drive in the first inning. After the Mariners counted twice in the second with the aid of doubles by Leroy Stanton and Kevin Pasley, the White Sox came back to win when Claudell Washington doubled in the third and Pryor hit his second homer.

Tigers 6, Indians 3 at Detroit (night game):
A four-run outburst in the second inning helped Jim Slaton gain his career high 15th victory as the Tigers defeated the Indians, 6-3. The Tigers' first two tallies came on singles by Alan Trammell and Ron LeFlore before Lou Whitaker added a pair with a triple. Slaton, who gave up 10 hits, ran out of steam with one out in the ninth and John Hiller relieved for his 12th save.

Brewers 3, Twins 0 at Minnesota (night game):
Larry Hisle hammered his 30th homer of the season and drove in two runs to raise his RBI total to 101 as the Brewers beat the Twins, 3-0, behind the three-hit pitching of Andy Replogle. Hisle's homer off Gary Serum in the fourth inning followed a double by Cecil Cooper. The Brewers then added their other tally on a three-base error by Hosken Powell, who dropped Ben Oglivie's fly, and a double by Robin Yount.

A's 11, Rangers 4 at Oakland (night game):
The first grand slam of Mitchell Page's major league career highlighted the A's 11-4 victory over the Rangers. The A's had a 4-3 lead going into the sixth inning when they added two runs and had the bases loaded before Page smashed his homer off Jon Matlack to make the score 10-3. Seven of the A's runs were unearned as the Rangers fell down in their support of Matlack. Kurt Bevacqua committed three errors and Bump Wills one. Al Oliver had three hits in a losing cause.

Orioles 5, Blue Jays 4 at Toronto (night game):
Two wild throws by Tom Underwood led to an unearned run and enabled the Orioles to defeat the Blue Jays, 5-4. Doug DeCinces drove in what proved to be the Orioles' winning run, hitting a double to score Eddie Murray in the eighth inning. Dave McKay had a 4-for-4 night, including a homer, for the Blue Jays. Doug Ault also homered.

Giants 8, Braves 5 at Atlanta (night game):
The slugging of Bill Madlock, who drove in two runs with a pair of homers and two more with a single, paced the Giants to an 8-5 victory over the Braves. Facing Braves' starter Eddie Solomon, Madlock hit the first pitch of the game over the left-center field fence. After two out, Darrell Evans also hit for the circuit, his first ever against his former Atlanta club. Madlock rapped his two-run single in the fourth and capped his big night with a homer in the seventh. The Braves' scoring included a two-run homer by Joe Nolan.

Padres 3, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Gaylord Perry gained his 17th victory and Rollie Fingers received credit for his 32nd save as the Padres defeated the Reds, 3-2. Jerry Turner drove in the Padres' first two runs with a sacrifice fly and a homer. With the score tied, 2-2, Gene Tenace drew a walk in the seventh inning, took third on a throwing error by Dan Driessen and scored the Padres' winning run on a single by Ozzie Smith.

Astros 5, Dodgers 0 at Houston (night game):
Ken Forsch, who recently came out of the bullpen to join the Astros' starting rotation, pitched a two-hitter and posted his first shutout since 1971, beating the Dodgers, 5-0. Forsch had only two previous shutouts in his major league career, both also against the Dodgers. Enos Cabell led the Astros' attack, hitting three singles and scoring three runs. The defeat cut the Dodgers' lead over the Giants to three games in the West division.

Cubs 4, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
After batting in the Cubs' first two runs with a single in the third inning, Rodney Scott accounted for two more with a double in the 10th to beat the Expos, 4-2. Walks to Dave Rader and Ivan DeJesus and a sacrifice by Ray Burris preceded Scott's single in the third. The Expos rallied to tie the score in the ninth, counting their pair on a double by Chris Speier and singles by Dave Cash, Del Unser and Tony Perez. In the 10th, DeJesus singled and stole second. With two out, Greg Gross was passed intentionally, but Scott wrecked the strategy with his double.

Mets 3, Pirates 2 at New York (night game):
Willie Montanez rapped three hits, each time driving in Steve Henderson, to bat the Mets to a 3-2 victory over the Pirates. In the first inning, after Elliott Maddox singled and took second on a balk, Henderson hit a grounder that resulted in a rundown of Maddox. Henderson was able to reach second on the play and scored on a single by Montanez. That pair clicked for another run in the third when Henderson tripled and Montanez singled. Then with the score tied, 2-2, Henderson and Montanez hit successive doubles in the eighth to produce the Mets' winning run.

[DH] Phillies 1, Cardinals 0 (night game) / Phillies 2, Cardinals 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Coming out ahead in a pair of pitching duels, the Phillies defeated the Cardinals in a twi-night doubleheader, 1-0 and 2-1, to pull three games ahead of the Pirates in the East division race. Dick Ruthven won a three-hit matchup with Tom Bruno in the opener when the Phillies scored an unearned run in the sixth inning. Garry Maddox led off with a single. When Richie Hebner grounded to Keith Hernandez, the first baseman threw to second in an attempted forceout of Maddox, but Garry Templeton let the ball get away. Maddox took third on the error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bob Boone. In the nightcap, the Phillies picked up a run in the second on a walk to Mike Schmidt, single by Jerry Martin and safe squeeze bunt by Ted Sizemore. The Cards came back with a homer by Jerry Morales in the sixth for their only run of the night. The tie persisted until the ninth when the Phillies scored on singles by Schmidt, Martin and Bake McBride.
