Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 3, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
Recording his 12th complete game of the season, Dennis Martinez tossed a three-hitter as the Orioles prevailed over the Red Sox, 3-2. After the Red Sox jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Orioles tied the game in the fifth on three consecutive errors, a run scoring when pitcher Mike Torrez threw a sacrifice bunt into left field. After Butch Hobson put the Red Sox ahead again in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer, the Orioles tallied twice in the sixth on a walk to Ken Singleton, back-to-back singles by Doug DeCinces and Eddie Murray and a grounder by Lee May.
White Sox 6, Twins 1 at Chicago (night game):
Batting in four runs with a pair of singles, Lamar Johnson sparked the White Sox to a 6-1 victory over the Twins. Johnson's first single came in the opening inning and drove in two runs. Johnson's second single capped a four-run fifth. Joe Gates singled for his first major league hit and plated a run during the outburst.
Tigers 7, Yankees 4 at Detroit (night game):
Home runs by Steve Kemp, Ron LeFlore and Rusty Staub powered the Tigers to a 7-4 triumph over the Yankees. LeFlore doubled in the first inning and after Staub drew a one-out walk, Kemp belted a three-run round-tripper. LeFlore led off the third with a circuit clout and, one out later, Staub drilled the ball into the upper deck in right field.
Royals 8, A's 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Three singles and three RBIs by Pete LaCock highlighted the Royals' 8-1 rout of the A's. LaCock had a two-run single in the first inning, led off with a single and scored in the sixth stanza and drove in another tally in the seventh. Larry Gura, yielding only five hits, went the route for the sixth time this season. The A's scored their run in the first on a double by Glenn Burke and a single by Mitchell Page.
Mariners 6, Brewers 5 at Seattle (night game):
A two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth carried the Mariners to a 6-5 triumph over the Brewers. With the Mariners trailing, 5-4, going into the final frame, Julio Cruz opened with a single and was sacrificed to second by Craig Reynolds. Bob McClure relieved Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound for the Brewers, walked Ruppert Jones and was yanked in favor of Bill Castro. A single by Leon Roberts loaded the bases and a single by Tom Paciorek drove in two runs to win the game.
Rangers 7, Angels 5 at Texas (night game):
A five-run fifth inning propelled the Rangers to a 7-5 triumph over the Angels. A walk to Mike Hargrove and one-out homer by Juan Beniquez tied the score at 4-4. A single by Al Oliver sent Frank Tanana to the showers. Richie Zisk greeted reliever Dyar Miller with a double and after Bobby Bonds was walked intentionally to load the bases, Jim Sundberg cleared them with a two-bagger. The loss dropped the Angels 2½ games behind the Royals in the A.L. West.
Reds 4, Astros 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
An error by Houston shortstop Rafael Landestoy gave the Reds the winning run in a 4-3 victory over the Astros. With one out in the ninth, Ken Henderson drew a walk. Rick Auerbach bunted and the ball was fielded by pitcher Joe Sambito, who threw to second for an attempted forceout. Landestoy failed to handle the throw and the ball sailed into center field, allowing Henderson to score the winning run.
Expos 5, Cardinals 1 at Montreal (night game):
A three-hitter by Rudy May enabled the Expos to subdue the Cardinals, 5-1. The score was 1-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning when the Expos went ahead to stay on singles by Ellis Valentine, Tony Perez and Gary Carter. In the fifth, a single by Chris Speier, triple by Dave Cash and double by Andre Dawson accounted for another pair. Dawson then scored from second on Valentine's fly to George Hendrick in deep center.
Pirates 5, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
A pair of two-run homers by Dave Parker powered the Pirates to a 5-1 triumph over the Phillies in a game delayed twice by rain for a total of 2½ hours. John Candelaria was hit by a pitch to open the sixth inning and, with two out, Parker broke the 1-1 tie with a round-tripper. His second circuit clout came in the ninth.
Padres 3, Braves 1 at San Diego (night game):
Winning the 264th game of his career, Gaylord Perry hurled the Padres to a 3-1 decision over the Braves. The victory was the Padres' 74th of the season, a new club high. A homer by Dave Winfield accounted for the Padres' first run in the second inning. A throwing error by Brave shortstop Jerry Royster resulted in a another tally in the fifth frame. The Braves' run in the sixth resulted from an error by Padre shortstop Ozzie Smith but the Padres got that run back in the bottom of the inning on doubles by Jim Wilhelm and Dave Roberts.
Dodgers 8, Giants 0 at San Francisco (night game):
The Dodgers all but eliminated San Francisco from the race in the N.L. West by beating the Giants, 8-0, Burt Hooton posting his third shutout of the season. After a double by Steve Garvey gave the Dodgers a 1-0 edge in the fourth inning, a two-run double by Davey Lopes in the eighth added to the lead. The Dodgers then broke the game open with a five-run outburst in the ninth inning that featured a three-run double by Bill Russell and a two-run homer by Lopes.
