Indians 2, Red Sox 1 at Cleveland (night game):
The Red Sox suffered their 11th defeat in the last 14 games and dropped out of first place in the East division after losing to the Indians, 2-1. David Clyde and Jim Kern combined on a seven-hitter. The score was 1-1 going into the last of the fifth inning when Dan Briggs smacked a leadoff triple. After Duane Kuiper grounded out, Tom Veryzer bunted down the first base line to score Briggs.

Yankees 7, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
A four-run outburst in the fourth inning propelled the Yankees to a 7-3 triumph over the Tigers and sole possession of first place in the East division for the first time this season. The Yankees began their fourth-inning cannonade when Graig Nettles singled and Lou Piniella tripled off the wall in right-center. A single by Roy White scored Piniella and, one out later, a triple by Mickey Rivers plated White. A sacrifice fly by Willie Randolph capped the inning.

Royals 9, A's 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Pounding the A's, 9-1, the Royals extended their lead in the West division over the Angels to 3½ games. The Royals' first two tallies came in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Hal McRae and a double by Amos Otis. McRae also had an RBI single in a four-run sixth inning. Rookie Luis Silverio, starting his first major league game, had a two-run double and scored three times for the Royals.

Brewers 7, Orioles 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
Getting all their runs in the first three innings, the Brewers held on to capture a 7-5 verdict from the Orioles. After Sal Bando homered in the second, Sixto Lezcano walked and scored on singles by Dick Davis and Robin Yount. A double by Gorman Thomas drove in Davis. Replacing Mike Flanagan, Nelson Briles walked Paul Molitor intentionally to load the sacks. Bando delivered a two-run single. Larry Hisle then drove in the fifth marker of the inning with a single. Yount hit a homer in the third. Ken Singleton batted in three runs for the Orioles.

Rangers 6, Angels 4 at Texas (night game):
Jolting the Angels' pennant hopes, the Rangers rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to gain a 6-4 victory. After blowing a 3-0 lead and falling behind, 4-3, the Angels tied the game in the top of the ninth on a double by Joe Rudi and single by Ron Jackson. With one out in the bottom of the frame, Bump Wills singled and Toby Harrah followed with a home run to end the game.

Dodgers 6, Astros 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Closing on on the title in the N.L. West, the Dodgers blanked the Astros, 6-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Bob Welch. The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Davey Lopes, a sacrifice by Bill North and single by Rick Monday. Another run scored in the fourth on a double by Steve Garvey and single by Bill Russell. In the seventh, the Dodgers scored twice on singles by Lopes and North, a sacrifice fly by Monday and single by Garvey.

Expos 4, Mets 3 at New York (night game):
A three-run outburst in the sixth inning carried the Expos to a 4-3 decision over the Mets. The Expos trailed, 2-1, going into the sixth, but tied the score on singles by Ellis Valentine and Tony Perez and a sacrifice fly by Warren Cromartie. Gary Carter then followed with his 18th homer of the season.

Phillies 6, Cubs 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Dick Ruthven, 12-4 since being obtained from Atlanta on June 15, pitched the Phillies to a 6-2 victory over the Cubs. The Phillies scored three runs in the fourth inning. Singles by Larry Bowa and Garry Maddox and an error by third baseman Rodney Scott on a grounder by Greg Luzinski loaded the sacks with none out. After one out, a walk to Mike Schmidt forced in Bowa. A fielder's choice grounder by Bob Boone scored Maddox and a single by Ted Sizemore accounted for the third marker. Schmidt belted a three-run homer in the eighth.

Pirates 7, Cardinals 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Homers by Bill Robinson and Willie Stargell paced the Pirates to a 7-1 rout of the Cardinals. Robinson smashed a three-run homer in the third inning and added a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Stargell had a circut clout in the seventh with Omar Moreno and Dave Parker aboard via walks. Stargell's round-tripper was the 426th of his career, tying him for 15th place on the all-time list with Billy Williams.

Padres 6, Reds 2 at San Diego (night game):
A two-run double by Broderick Perkins in the sixth inning keyed a four-run rally that sent the Padres on their way to a 6-2 triumph over the Reds. With the score 2-2, Jerry Turner opened the sixth with a base on balls and ave Winfield lined a single to right. Perkins followed with a double down the right field line to break the tie. A triple by Fernando Gonzalez scored Perkins and a single by pinch-hitter Gene Richards tallied Gonzalez.

Braves 5, Giants 3 at San Francisco (day game):
The fading Giants suffered their fifth straight defeat, losing to the Braves, 5-3, in 12 innings. The score was 3-3 when Gary Matthews opened the 12th with a double. One out later, Dale Murphy singled to left, scoring Matthews, and went to second on the throw to the plate. After Rod Gilbreath drew an intentional walk, a single by Cito Gaston plated Murphy with an insurance run.
