Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 11, Blue Jays 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Led by Pat Kelly and Eddie Murray, who drove in three runs apiece, the Orioles overwhelmed the Blue Jays, 11-1. Kelly hit a homer, double and single. Murray accounted for his RBIs with two singles. Rich Dauer batted in two runs with a double and Lee May also produced two with a homer.
Tigers 10, Indians 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Every starting batter in the Tigers' lineup except Rusty Staub participated in the 16-hit attack that beat the Indians, 10-4. Although going 0-for-3, Staub scored two runs. Lance Parrish rapped a double and three singles. The Tigers clinched the decision with five runs in the ninth inning. Parrish and Aurelio Rodriguez hit doubles, driving in two runs apiece, and Dave Stegman accounted for the fifth run of the frame with another double. Ron Pruitt homered as the Indians rallied for three runs in the ninth to chase Milt Wilcox before John Hiller came in to retire the last two batters.
Angels 4, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
A homer by Carney Lansford with two men on base in the eighth inning lifted the Angels to a 4-3 victory and carried them within 3½ games of the pace-setting Royals in the West division. A two-run homer by Frank White paced the Royals to a 3-1 lead before Bobby Grich drew a pass from Marty Pattin to open the Angels' eighth. Al Hrabosky took over in relief and walked Rick Miller with one out. Lansford then hit his homer. In anger, Hrabosky threw two pitches over the head of Lyman Bostock, who was the next batter. Bostock charged the mound, setting off a melee that brought both teams on the field. After order was restored, Bostock and Hrabosky exchanged words and went after each other again. Both players were ejected from the game. LaRoche, who pitched the last 1 1/3 innings for the Angels, set a California club record with his 23rd save of the season.
Twins 5, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers lost to the Twins, 5-2, and fell six games off the pace in the East division. The Twins, who collected seven hits, began their scoring in the first inning with two-out doubles by Rod Carew and Glenn Adams. A single by Dave Edwards, triple by Roy Smalley and single by Carew added a pair in the third. An error by Cecil Cooper enabled the Twins to chalk up two unearned runs in the fourth before Ben Oglivie batted in the Brewers' runs with a double in the fifth.
Yankees 3, Red Sox 2 at New York (day game):
The Yankees, who swept a three-game series in Fenway Park September 8-10, added a second straight victory over the collapsing Red Sox in Yankee Stadium, winning 3-2, and moved 3½ lengths ahead in the East division race. For the first time in the six meetings, the Red Sox took a lead when Jerry Remy singled and Jim Rice homered in the first inning. The Yankees came back with a run on singles by Willie Randolph, Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson in their half of the first and tied the score when Jackson homered in the fifth. Mickey Rivers tripled over the head of Carl Yastrzemski to open the Yankee ninth. Rivers was kept at third when Randolph grounded to Rick Burleson. Munson fouled an attempted squeeze bunt and then swung ahead, hitting a fly to right field. Rice fell down after making a running, off-balance catch and was unable to throw to the plate as Rivers scored to decide Catfish Hunter's duel with Mike Torrez.
White Sox 9, Mariners 1 at Seattle (night game):
Francisco Barrios allowed only one hit while pitching the White Sox to a 9-1 victory over the Mariners. Two walks and a pair of flies accounted for the Mariners' run in the second inning before Julio Cruz singled in the sixth for their lone hit. Eric Soderholm led the White Sox' 19-hit attack with four singles, driving in two runs and scoring two. Bob Molinaro contributed a homer.
Rangers 8, A's 1 at Texas (night game):
A triple by Jim Sundberg with the bases loaded in the first inning started the Rangers off to an 8-1 victory over the A's. Sundberg also drove in another run with a single in the eighth. Fergie Jenkins, who breezed to his 16th victory and pitched the route for the 15th time this season, lost his bid for a shutout when Mitchell Page homered for the A's in the ninth.
Cardinals 4, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Mike Phillips, who hit a three-run homer to clinch the previous day's victory, knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single to lead the Cardinals to a 4-1 decision over the Cubs. Ted Simmons and Keith Hernandez singled in the sixth inning and pulled a double steal as Ken Reitz struck out. An intentional pass to Terry Kennedy loaded the bases before Phillips put the Cardinals ahead, 2-1, with his single. Phillips also doubled and scored on a two-bagger by Garry Templeton in the eighth. George Hendrick capped the scoring with a homer in the ninth.
Dodgers 2, Braves 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Batting with the bases loaded, Joe Ferguson drove in two runs with a single in the sixth inning to bring the Dodgers a 2-0 victory over the Braves. The stage was set for Ferguson's hit when Dusty Baker walked, Steve Garvey doubled and Ron Cey was passed intentionally. The victory was the Dodgers' seventh straight and reduced their magic number to six for clinching the West division title.
Phillies 2, Mets 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Homers accounted for all three runs as the Phillies edged the Mets, 2-1, in 10 innings to remain three games ahead of the Pirates in the East division. Greg Luzinski provided the Phillies' first run with a circuit clout off Craig Swan in the second inning. John Stearns tagged Steve Carlton for a round-tripper to tie the score in the fifth. Dwight Bernard replaced Swan on the mound for the Mets in the 10th and was the loser when Mike Schmidt came up with one out and homered over the right field wall.
Pirates 12, Expos 5 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Piling up 19 hits in their best attack of the season, the Pirates trounced the Expos, 12-5. Dave Parker smacked three doubles and drove in four runs to raise his RBI total to a career high of 104. Frank Taveras had three singles and a triple, marking the third time this season that the Pirates' shortstop had collected four hits in one game. Tony Perez and Warren Cromartie produced homers for the Expos.
Padres 2, Astros 1 at San Diego (night game):
Pinch-hitter Oscar Gamble delivered a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to give the Padres a 2-1 victory over the Astros and enable Gaylord Perry to win his 19th game, one day after the veteran righthander's 40th birthday. Broderick Perkins opened the ninth with a single and gave way to pinch-runner Derrel Thomas. Dave Winfield walked and Jerry Turner beat out a bunt to load the bases. Joaquin Andujar took over for Joe Sambito on the mound for the Astros and struck out Gene Tenace, but Gamble batted for Barry Evans and came through with his run-scoring fly.
Giants 3, Reds 2 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants ended their seven game losing streak when Terry Whitfield singled with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning for his third hit of the game and drove in a run to beat the Reds, 3-2. George Foster hit his 33rd homer of the season for the Reds to tie the score at 2-2 in the eighth. Art Gardner, coming in to run for Mike Ivie, took second on a sacrifice and reached third on an infield hit by Rob Andrews. After an intentional pass to John Tamargo loaded the bases, Skip James struck out before Whitfield delivered his single. The victory moved the Giants ahead of the Reds into second place in the West division.
