Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Blue Jays 0 at Baltimore (day game):
Notching his 18th victory, Mike Flanagan pitched the Orioles to a 5-0 whitewashing of the Blue Jays. Doug DeCinces drove in three runs with a homer and a single. After accounting for one RBI with a single in the first inning, DeCinces climaxed a four-run third by hitting his homer with a man on base. He added a two-base hit in the eighth.

Indians 2, Tigers 1 at Cleveland (day game):
Home runs by Ron Pruitt and Tom Veryzer lifted the Indians to a 2-1 triumph over the Tigers. Pruitt hit a 2-0 pitch into the left field seats with two out in the seventh inning and Veryzer clouted a leadoff round-tripper in the eighth.

Royals 5, Angels 0 at Kansas City (day game):
Moving closer to the championship in the West division, the Royals blanked the Angels, 5-0, behind the five-hit pitching of Dennis Leonard. Frank White and George Brett hit back-to-back homers in the third inning and the Royals added another pair of runs in the fifth frame on a walk to Brett and consecutive doubles by Hal McRae and Amos Otis. Their final tally came in the seventh on a double by Freddie Patek and a single by Brett.

Twins 4, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
A throwing error by Andy Replogle enabled the Twins to post a 4-3 decision over the Brewers. The score was 3-3 when Rod Carew led off the sixth inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Glenn Adams. After a walk to Dan Ford, Hosken Powell hit a high bouncer back to Replogle, who threw past first baseman Cecil Cooper, allowing Carew to score.

Red Sox 7, Yankees 3 at New York (day game):
Snapping their five-game losing streak, the Red Sox won over the Yankees, 7-3, and pulled within 2½ lengths of the leaders in the East division race. The Red Sox scored their first run in the third inning on a single by Rick Burleson, a stolen base and a single by Carl Yastrzemski, and made it 2-0 in the fifth on a single by Dwight Evans, sacrifice by Burleson and single by Jerry Remy. Another marker followed in the seventh on a walk to Evans, double by Burleson and sacrifice fly by Remy. In the eighth, George Scott broke his 0-for-36 slump with an RBI double and Butch Hobson hit a two-run double. Yastrzemski clouted a solo homer in the ninth.

Mariners 3, White Sox 1 at Seattle (day game):
A pair of unearned runs enabled the Mariners to down the White Sox, 3-1, behind the three-hit pitching of Byron McLaughlin. The score was 1-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning when White Sox left fielder Claudell Washington dropped Dan Meyer's fly ball for a two-base error and Larry Milbourne beat out an infield hit. Meyer, who had held second, moved to third when third baseman Eric Soderholm's throw eluded Mike Squires at first base. A sacrifice fly by Julio Cruz scored Meyer and, after a walk to Craig Reynolds, a single by Ruppert Jones plated Milbourne.

Rangers 3, A's 1 at Texas (day game):
Three hits by Richie Zisk led the attack as the Rangers triumphed over the A's, 3-1. Bump Wills and Johnny Grubb stroked consecutive singles in the first inning and moved up on a groundout by Al Oliver. Zisk then smacked a two-run single. In the third frame, Zisk singled, advanced to second on a single by Juan Beniquez, moved to third on a throwing error by A's third baseman Wayne Gross and scored on a single by Jim Sundberg. Jon Matlack went the route for the 16th time this season.

Cubs 4, Cardinals 2 at Chicago (day game):
In a game called in the last of the seventh because of rain, Chicago downed the Cardinals, 4-2. Ivan DeJesus paced the attack with three singles and two RBIs. DeJesus' second hit drove in one of the Cubs' three runs in the fourth inning. Errors by Ted Simmons and Garry Templeton and a wild pitch aided the Cubs' rally. The third single by DeJesus drove in Ray Burris, who tripled in the sixth.

Braves 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
With Phil Niekro getting credit for his 19th win of the season, the Braves edged the Dodgers, 3-2. The Braves tallied twice in the third inning when Dale Murphy led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Niekro. After Jerry Royster flied out, a double by Rowland Office plated Niekro. The Braves picked up the deciding run in the fourth when Jeff Burroughs reached first on an error by Bill Russell, advanced to third on a single by Joe Nolan and scored on a grounder by Murphy.

Mets 2, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Hurling his first complete major league game, Mike Bruhert allowed only four hits as the Mets blanked the Phillies, 2-0. Lee Mazzilli opened the game with a double and came home on a single by Elliott Maddox, who advanced to second on a balk and scored when third baseman Mike Schmidt threw wildly on an infield hit by John Stearns.

Pirates 5, Expos 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Winning their sixth straight, the Pirates moved to within two games of the first-place Phillies in the East division by beating the Expos, 5-3. A three-run homer by Dave Parker in the third inning, following a single by Frank Taveras and walk to Omar Moreno, was the big blow of the game. Willie Stargell stole home on the front end of a double steal in the second inning and Bill Robinson had a run-scoring double in the eighth.

Padres 3, Astros 1 at San Diego (day game):
The Padres cashed in on a pair of errors and prevailed over the Astros, 3-1. With one out in the third inning, Gene Richards singled. Ozzie Smith hit a grounder that dribbled through the legs of first baseman Bob Watson, Richards taking third. With Broderick Perkins at bat, Smith stole second. Perkins then hit a sacrifice fly to Terry Puhl in center field, scoring Richards and advancing Smith to third. When second baseman Jimmy Sexton threw poorly to the plate, Smith slid home.

Reds 7, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
The pitching and batting of Paul Moskau carried the Reds to a 7-1 victory over the Giants, lifting Cincinnati to second place in the West division, one-half game ahead of San Francisco. The Reds' righthander unfurled a four-hitter and had the big blow of the game, hitting a double with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh inning. He also had an RBI single in the ninth.
