Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 10, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
The first major-league grand-slam homer by Gary Roenicke highlighted the Orioles' 10-3 romp over the Indians. The Birds tallied five times in their first turn at bat, Roenicke's blow plating four and a sacrifice fly by Doug DeCinces another. A bases-loaded triple by Billy Smith in the fifth inning gave the Orioles three markers in that frame and put the game on ice.

Red Sox 5, Tigers 4 at Detroit (night game):
The Red Sox outlasted the Tigers, 5-4, in 11 innings to remain 2½ games behind the division-leading Yankees in the A. L. East. With the score 4-4, Butch Hobson drew a leadoff walk to begin the Sox' winning rally. Frank Duffy ran for Hobson and reached third on a pinch-single by Jack Brohamer. John Hiller relieved Steve Baker on the mound for the Tigers and got two outs, including an erasure of Duffy at the plate on a ground ball, but Jerry Remy then lined a single up the middle to drive in the game-winning marker.

Twins 10, Angels 4 at Minnesota (night game):
A seven-run bombardment in the fourth inning carried the Twins to a 10-4 rout of the Angels as Rod Carew raised his league-leading average to .340 with three hits. Hosken Powell and Dan Ford each had two hits. Jose Morales ripped a three-run triple in the big fourth frame. Carew, Mike Cubbage and Rob Wilfong each had an RBI in the fourth.

Yankees 4, Brewers 3 at New York (night game):
A single by Mickey Rivers in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 3-3 tie and lifted the Yankees to a 4-3 decision over the Brewers. Chris Chambliss was hit by a pitch to lead off the Yankee eighth and moved to second on an infield out by Graig Nettles. Roy White was given an intentional walk and Cliff Johnson then drew a base on balls to load the sacks. Rivers hit a hard smash that bounced off shortstop Robin Yount's glove into left field and Chambliss crossed the plate with the winning run.

A's 6, White Sox 3 at Oakland (night game):
Taking advantage of wildness on the part of Chicago pitcher Ken Kravec, the A's posted a 6-3 victory over the White Sox. Kravec walked Rico Carty and Taylor Duncan in the second inning prior to a two-run single by Miguel Dilone. In the sixth stanza, Kravec walked Dilone, who scored on a double by Mike Edwards. Dilone also stole two bases. Dave Revering hit a solo homer in the fourth.

Royals 7, Mariners 6 at Seattle (night game):
With the winning run resulting from a hit batsman, the Royals picked up a 7-6 triumph over the Mariners in 11 innings. The score was 6-6 entering the 11th frame when George Brett stroked a leadoff single. Amos Otis sacrificed and was safe at first when pitcher Mike Parrott bobbled the ball. A single by Darrell Porter loaded the sacks and brought on Enrique Romo in relief of Parrott. Romo, after throwing a strike, hit John Wathan with his next heave to force in the winning marker. The Royals trailed, 6-5, going into the ninth chukker but tied the contest on a walk to Otis, an infield out and a single by Hal McRae.

Reds 4, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Getting credit for his first major league shutout, Mike LaCoss pitched the Reds to a 4-0 victory over the Dodgers. The Reds took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a single by Johnny Bench, double by Dan Driessen and sacrifice fly by Dave Concepcion and got three runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Ken Griffey and two-run hit by Bench.
