Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 12, Red Sox 2 at Detroit (night game):
Preventing Boston from gaining on New York in the East division race, the Tigers fired a 15-hit barrage in clobbering the Red Sox, 12-2. Rusty Staub drove in four runs, one with a single in the first inning and three with a home run in the seventh. Lou Whitaker clouted a three-run round-tripper in sixth frame, the blast coming off reliever John LaRose, making his major league debut. Dave Rozema won his third consecutive complete game, while Mike Torrez dropped his sixth straight decision.

Brewers 5, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Coming from behind with two runs in the eighth inning, the Brewers edged the Royals, 5-4, reducing the K. C. first-place lead in the West division to five games over the Angels. The Brewers trailed, 4-3, entering the eighth but tied the contest on a leadoff single by Larry Hisle and a two-out triple by Sal Bando. Paul Molitor then doubled to left to plate Bando with the game-winning run to spoil the major league debut of loser Bill Paschall.

Twins 5, Rangers 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Paced by Dan Ford, who had three hits and drove in two runs, the Twins posted a 5-3 triumph over the Rangers. The Twins scored four times in the fourth inning on four walks, a hit batsman and infield singles by Rod Carew and Ford. A sacrifice fly by Ford plated another marker in the sixth.

[DH] Blue Jays 8, Yankees 1 (night game) / Yankees 3, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (night game):
After the Blue Jays won the opening game of the twin bill, 8-1, the Yankees came back to capture the nightcap, 3-2, and increase their lead in the East division to two full games over the Red Sox. In the lidlifter, Yankee ace Ron Guidry was shelled from the parapet, lasting only 1 2/3 innings, during which time he was thumped for five runs and six hits. The Jays' attack was climaxed by back-to-back triples by Rick Bosetti and Bob Bailor in the second inning. The Yankees trailed in the second contest 2-0, going into the ninth inning, but scored three times to escape with a victory. A single by Willie Randolph began the rally and after Reggie Jackson drew walk, Blue Jay starter Tom Underwood was replaced by Victor Cruz. The reliever was ineffective, yielding consecutive RBI singles by Lou Piniella, Chris Chambliss and Graig Nettles.

Cubs 5, Pirates 1 at Chicago (day game):
A five-hitter by Mike Krukow snapped the seven-game Pittsburgh winning streak as the Cubs prevailed, 5-1, dropping the Pirates two games behind the leading Phillies in the East division. The first Cub run came in the opening inning as Ivan DeJesus walked, advanced to third on a single by Manny Trillo and scored on a single by Bill Buckner. A single by Mick Kelleher, double by Krukow and single by DeJesus made it 2-0 in the second. Pirate starter Jim Rooker was kayoed in the fourth. DeJesus drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on a single by Trillo and tallied on a sacrifice fly by Buckner. A double by Dave Kingman then plated Trillo. The final Cub run came in the eighth on a double by Mike Vail.

Braves 3, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
A single by Glenn Hubbard in the ninth inning scored pinch-runner Eddie Miller and gave the Braves a 3-2 victory over the Astros. The score was 2-2 going into the ninth when Joe Nolan began the winning surge with a one-out single. Miller ran for Nolan, stole second and scored one out later on the hit by Hubbard.

Reds 4, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
With George Foster and Tom Seaver getting the key blows, the Reds prevailed over the Dodgers, 4-3. Foster hit a home run in the fourth inning following a double by Joe Morgan. Seaver singled in two runs in the seventh after the Reds loaded the bases on a triple by Dan Driessen and intentional walks to Dave Concepcion and Champ Summers. Seaver recorded his 200th strikeout of the year in the third inning to become the first pitcher to strike out 200 or more batters in 10 different seasons.

Phillies 4, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Increasing their first-place margin in the East division to two games, the Phillies downed the Expos, 4-2. The Phils got on the board in the fifth inning when Jose Cardenal doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Ted Sizemore. In the sixth, Garry Maddox drilled a one-out double and Greg Luzinski followed with a home run. The next batter, Mike Schmidt, also clouted a round-tripper. Tony Perez had a two-run homer for the Expos in the bottom of the sixth.

Giants 6, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
The Giants beat the Padres, 6-3, as Vida Blue got credit for his first victory since August 4. The Giants scored two runs in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Jack Clark and RBI single by Mike Ivie and added another in the third on a single by Clark and double by Darrell Evans. A triple by Marc Hill produced another tally in the fourth and the final pair came in the seventh on RBI singles by Hector Cruz and Roger Metzger.

Mets 7, Cardinals 6 at St. Louis (night game):
A four-run uprising in the seventh inning enabled the Mets to defeat the Cardinals, 7-6, in the clubs' continuing battle to determine the worst team in the league. The score was 3-3 going into the seventh when Lee Mazzilli drew a leadoff walk and reached second safely when Redbird shortstop Garry Templeton errored on an attempted forceout at second on a bunt by Tim Foli. Steve Henderson then walked to load the sacks and bring on Aurelio Lopez in relief of George Frazier. Willie Montanez grounded a ball into center for a two-run single. John Stearns followed with a sacrifice fly and when Dan Norman stroked a single, Lopez departed in favor of Roy Thomas. Elliott Maddox hit a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.
