Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 4, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (day game):
The Tigers snapped a 2-2 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth inning and defeated the Orioles, 4-2. Steve Kemp drew a walk to open the ninth and sped to third when losing reliever Don Stanhouse fielded a bunt by Lance Parrish and threw the ball into center field on an attempted force play. Aurelio Rodriguez then blooped a single to left, scoring Kemp. A single by Alan Trammell plated Parrish with an insurance tally.

Angels 7, White Sox 3 at Chicago (day game):
The grief-stricken Angels posted a 7-3 victory over the White Sox. Prior to the game, a moment of silence was observed for California outfielder Lyman Bostock, who was shot and killed the night before in Gary, Ind. The Angels batted around in a five-run sixth inning. Don Baylor led off with a home run and four successive singles followed to account for two more runs before Rick Miller capped the scoring with a single that produced the final pair.

Yankees 4, Indians 0 at Cleveland (day game):
Notching his ninth shutout of the season, Ron Guidry pitched a 4-0 victory over the Indians, enabling the Yankees to maintain their one-game lead over the Red Sox in the East division. The Yankees scored two runs in the fourth inning on singles by Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson, Graig Nettles and Lou Piniella and added another pair in the seventh on hits by Bucky Dent, Willie Randolph, Munson and Jackson. Only one Tribe runner reached second base. The nine shutouts by Guidry tied the league record for southpaws set by Babe Ruth with the Red Sox in 1916.

Brewers 5, A's 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Completing his 23rd start and winning his 21st game, southpaw Mike Caldwell hurled the Brewers to a 5-2 triumph over the A's. The Brewers got two runs in the third inning on singles by Paul Molitor and Charlie Moore, a double by Robin Yount and an error by A's catcher Jim Essian on the throw to the plate. A double by Ben Oglivie and single by Jim Wohlford produced another marker in the fourth and doubles by Oglivie, Wohlford and Molitor gave the Brewers a 5-0 lead in the sixth.

Twins 6, Royals 4 at Minnesota (day game):
After failing to hold a 3-0 lead, the Twins came back to defeat the Royals, 6-4. The Royals pulled even at 3-3 in the sixth inning, but Dan Ford smashed a tie-breaking homer in the Twins' half. The Twins then posted their winning margin in the eighth, with one run scoring on a single by Butch Wynegar and the other on left fielder Steve Braun's second error of the game. Tom Poquette hit a homer to no avail for the Royals in the ninth.

[DH] Rangers 5, Mariners 3 (day game) / Rangers 4, Mariners 3 at Texas (day game):
Completing a sweep of the five-game series, the Rangers won a doubleheader from the Mariners, 5-3 and 4-3. A squeeze bunt by Mike Jorgensen in the second inning produced Texas' first run of the opening game. A double by Al Oliver plated two more tallies in the third frame and Pat Putnam cracked his first major league homer to lead off the fourth. In the second contest, rookie righthander Danny Darwin got credit for his first big league win as another rookie, Billy Sample, hit a two-run double in the first inning to start the Rangers off to their victory.

Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 6 at Toronto (day game):
Capitalizing on loose play by Toronto, the Red Sox outlasted the Blue Jays, 7-6, in a 14-inning marathon to remain one game behind the division-leading Yankees in the East division. The score was 6-6 going into the 14th when Jim Rice opened with a single, went to second on a groundout by Carl Yastrzemski and to third on an infield hit by Carlton Fisk. After Fred Lynn struck out, Butch Hobson hit a smash to third baseman Roy Howell, who threw wildly past first base as Rice scored. The teams combined for 36 hits, the most in any A.L. game this season.

Reds 2, Braves 1 at Atlanta (day game):
Yielding only three hits, Tom Hume pitched the Reds to a 2-1 verdict over the Braves. The Reds' first run came in the second inning when George Foster singled, moved to second on an infield out and scored on a single by Junior Kennedy. In the fourth, singles by Foster, Dan Driessen and Champ Summers produced the margin of victory.

Dodgers 4, Padres 0 at Los Angeles (day game):
Winning their second straight West division title, the Dodgers blanked the Padres, 4-0, behind the five-hit pitching of Bob Welch. It was the 21-year-old rookie's third shutout since joining the club from Albuquerque (Pacific Coast) June 20. Garvey rapped out three straight hits, including a double, and drove in three runs.

Expos 4, Pirates 0 at Montreal (day game):
Dealing a severe blow to the Pirates' pennant hopes, the Expos posted a 4-0 victory behind the three-hit hurling of Scott Sanderson. The Expos scored three runs in the first inning. Dave Cash singled, went to third on a double by Andre Dawson and scored by beating the throw home on a grounder by Ellis Valentine, who was safe at first. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third and they scored on a groundout by Tony Perez and a sacrifice fly by Warren Cromartie.

Phillies 8, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
The Phillies took a commanding four-game lead over the Pirates in the East division by defeating the Mets, 8-2, while the runners-up lost to the Expos. Bake McBride hit the first pitch of the game for a home run and the Phils made it 3-0 in the third inning on a two-run single by Garry Maddox. The game was put on ice with four runs in the sixth.
