Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 6, A's 2 at Chicago (night game):
A two-run single by Lamar Johnson in the third inning propelled the White Sox to a 6-2 victory over the A's. The score was 1-1 when Greg Pryor led off the Sox third with a single. Harry Chappas laid down a sacrifice bunt and was safe when losing pitcher John Henry Johnson threw wildly to first. Mike Squires also sacrificed and Chet Lemon was given an intentional pass to load the bases for Lamar Johnson. Pitcher Johnson booted another sacrifice bunt attempt by Chappas in the seventh stanza to set the stage for two more Pale Hose runs.
Royals 7, Mariners 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Clinching at least a tie for the A. L. West title, the Royals beat the Mariners, 7-2, as Dennis Leonard became a 20-game winner for the second straight year. A two-run triple by John Wathan gave K. C. a first-inning lead and the Royals put the game away with four tallies in the fourth frame as Freddie Patek, Willie Wilson and Hal McRae collected RBI hits with McRae scoring the final run of the inning on a stolen base and consecutive errors by catcher Bob Stinson and center fielder Ruppert Jones.
Rangers 3, Twins 2 at Texas (night game):
Getting a run in the bottom of the 11th inning, the Rangers edged the Twins, 3-2. A double by Bobby Bonds with one out in the 11th started the winning outburst. An infield out by Bump Wills moved Bonds to third and he scored on a sharp single to center by Al Oliver. Reggie Cleveland pitched three innings in relief to gain the win.
Cardinals 3, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
Behind the two-hit pitching of Silvio Martinez, the Cardinals blanked the Mets, 3-0. The Redbirds scored all their runs in the seventh inning. Singles by Jerry Mumphrey, Jerry Morales and George Hendrick produced the first run and an error by first baseman Willie Montanez then loaded the bases. A single by Roger Freed plated the second tally and an RBI single by Mike Tyson closed the scoring.
Phillies 3, Expos 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Maintaining their four-game lead in the East division, the Phillies outlasted the Expos, 3-2, in 12 innings. The score was 2-2 going into the bottom of the 12th when Orlando Gonzalez beat out an infield hit on which Expo pitcher Stan Bahnsen was ejected for arguing the call at first base. When Woodie Fryman relieved, Bake McBride laid down a bunt and both runners were safe when third baseman Stan Papi failed to handle the ball. A sacrifice by Bud Harrelson moved the runners along and Larry Bowa ended the contest with a single. The Phils had trailed, 2-0, entering the last of the ninth, but tied the game on an error by Dave Cash and an RBI triple by Mike Schmidt.
Pirates 7, Cubs 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Keeping their slim pennant hopes alive, the Pirates defeated the Cubs, 7-4, as Dave Parker, Omar Moreno and Frank Taveras drove in two runs apiece. Parker collected a single, double and triple, driving in one run with a first-inning double and another with a triple in the fifth frame. Moreno had a second-inning sacrifice fly and RBI single in fifth and Taveras singled across two runs in the third.
