Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Indians 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Mike Flanagan lost his bid for a no-hitter with two out in the ninth inning when Gary Alexander hit a 320-foot opposite field homer as the Orioles notched a 3-1 victory over the Indians. Flanagan yielded two singles after the round-tripper and was relieved by Don Stanhouse, who got the final out. The Orioles scored on RBI singles by Eddie Murray and Doug DeCinces in the first inning and a homer by DeCinces in the eighth.

Red Sox 6, Tigers 0 at Boston (night game):
Shutout pitching by Dennis Eckersley enabled the Red Sox to beat the Tigers, 6-0, and stay within one game of the first-place Yankees in the East division. The Bosox scored three runs in the first inning, two coming on a double by Fred Lynn and another on a grounder by Carl Yastrzemski. Jim Rice connected for a two-run homer in the fifth following a single by Jerry Remy, and Rick Burleson drove in the sixth marker with a sixth-inning single.

Angels 4, Brewers 3 at California (night game):
A two-out single by Carney Lansford in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Angels to a 4-3 decision over the Brewers. Danny Goodwin began the frame with a pinch-hit single, advanced to second on a sacrifice, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Lansford's single. The Brewers had tied the score at 3-3 in the ninth on an RBI single by Don Money.

A's 10, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Exploding for eight runs in the seventh inning, the A's routed the White Sox, 10-3. The A's sent 11 batters to the plate in their big frame. Rob Picciolo opened with a double and drove in the final two runs of the inning with a homer. A two-run single by Taylor Duncan, a wild pitch, RBI singles by Rico Carty and Dave Revering and a double by Joe Wallis accounted for the other runs.

Royals 4, Mariners 1 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals clinched their third straight West division championship as Larry Gura pitched a three hitter to beat the Mariners, 4-1. The Royals tallied three times in the fifth inning to put the game away. Hal McRae led off with a single and took third on a double by Freddie Patek. Frank White hit a grounder and reached first base safely as McRae beat the throw to the plate. A walk to George Brett loaded the bases and a single by Amos Otis then produced two more runs. Doubles by Pete LaCock and Al Cowens added another marker in the sixth.

Yankees 4, Blue Jays 1 at New York (night game):
Back-to-back doubles by Bucky Dent and Mickey Rivers keyed a three-run inning as the Yankees maintained their one-game lead in the East division by beating the Blue Jays, 4-1. The decisive rally began with a one out single by Graig Nettles. One out later, Roy White singled and Dent and Rivers followed with their two-baggers. A single by Lou Piniella and triple by Nettles produced another marker in the sixth. Rich Gossage relieved with none out and two on in the ninth and closed the door on the Jays.

Twins 6, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
A five-run eruption in the ninth inning carried the Twins to a 6-2 victory over the Rangers. Dan Ford led off the stanza with a single to knock out Ranger starter Doc Medich. Paul Mirabella relieved and was greeted by a single by Butch Wynegar. Mirabella thereupon was excused in favor of Reggie Cleveland. Dave Edwards sacrificed the runners along and Rich Chiles was walked intentionally to load the sacks. Mike Cubbage hit a high bouncer to first baseman Mike Jorgensen who threw wildly past catcher Jim Sundberg, two runs scoring on the error. Roy Smalley followed with a run-scoring double. After Rod Carew walked, Hosken Powell grounded to shortstop to drive in another marker and a second run scored when shortstop Nelson Norman threw wildly past first base.

Astros 2, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Joe Niekro, with relief help from Ken Forsch, prevented brother Phil Niekro from gaining his 20th victory as the Astros blanked the Braves, 2-0. The Astros took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Terry Puhl walked, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on single by Jose Cruz. An insurance marker was added in the fourth when Cruz struck out but reached first on a passed ball, stole second and scored on a single by Julio Gonzalez.

Reds 6, Dodgers 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
A two-run double by Johnny Bench and a two-run homer by George Foster were the big blows as the Reds downed the Dodgers, 6-4. The Reds scored three runs in the third inning on a single by Tom Seaver, double by Pete Rose, single by Dave Concepcion and Bench's two-bagger. Rose had an RBI double in the fourth. Foster's round-tripper came in the fifth following a single by Ken Griffey. Two doubles by Rose gave him 51 for the season to tie the Cincinnati record and are the most in the N. L. since Frank Robinson had 51 for the Reds in 1962.

Mets 3, Cardinals 1 at New York (night game):
Lowering his earned-run average to a league-leading 2.43, Craig Swan got credit for the victory as the Mets downed the Cardinals, 3-1. The Score was 1-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning when the Mets staged their winning rally. A single by Tim Foli, double by Steve Henderson and an intentional walk to Willie Montanez loaded the bases before a grounder by John Stearns and single by Dan Norman delivered the winning runs.

[DH] Phillies 5, Expos 3 (night game) / Expos 3, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Reducing their magic number to three for clinching a third straight East division title, the Phillies split a twin bill with the Expos, winning the first game, 5-3, and losing the second game, 3-0. In the opener, consecutive singles by Larry Bowa, Garry Maddox and Greg Luzinski produced a first-inning run and the Phils added a pair in the third on an infield hit by Bowa and a homer by Luzinski. Tim McCarver drove in a run with a single in the sixth and a sacrifice fly by Bob Boone accounted for the final tally in the eighth. In the nightcap, Tug McGraw made his first start since 1974 but was bested by Rudy May, who hurled a four-hitter. Warren Cromartie hit a solo homer in the fourth, a triple by Chris Speier drove in another marker in the seventh and Gary Carter had a run-scoring single in the ninth.

Pirates 5, Cubs 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A three-run homer by Willie Stargell propelled the Pirates to a 5-2 triumph over the Cubs, keeping the Bucs' title hopes alive in the East division race. Stargell's blast came in the third inning and followed a double by Omar Moreno and an intentional walk to Dave Parker. Ed Ott and Bill Robinson each had RBI singles for the Pirates in the sixth stanza. Rookie righthander Don Robinson pitched his ninth complete game of the season.

Padres 4, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
With customary relief help from Rollie Fingers, Gaylord Perry got credit for his 21st victory of the season as the Padres prevailed over the Giants, 4-1. The Padres scored on a triple by Gene Richards and infield out by Ozzie Smith in the first inning and added another in the third on a second triple by Richards and another groundout by Smith.
