Orioles 3, Indians 1 at Baltimore (night game):
With Doug DeCinces extending his hitting streak to 17 games, the Orioles defeated the Indians, 3-1. Gary Roenicke, who doubled in the first inning and scored on a single by DeCinces, had a solo homer in the fifth. Mark Belanger added an RBI single in the eighth for the Birds' final runs.

Red Sox 5, Tigers 2 at Boston (night game):
Winning their fourth straight game and staying in the chase for the East division title, the Red Sox swept past the Tigers, 5-2. The Red Sox tallied three runs in the first inning when Jerry Remy and Carl Yastrzemski drew walks, Carlton Fisk tripled and Fred Lynn singled. George Scott hit a homer in the second and added an RBI single in the eighth.

Angels 4, Brewers 1 at California (night game):
Dave Frost scattered 10 hits before needing last-out help from Dave LaRoche, who picked up his 25th save. Rick Miller's second double knocked in two runs in the fifth, breaking a scoreless tie. Ken Landreaux hit his fifth homer for California in the seventh.

Mariners 4, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Ruppert Jones slashed a two-run triple, highlighting a three-run ninth inning that rallied Seattle over Kansas City and prevented Paul Splittorff from gaining his 20th victory. Byron McLaughlin, 4-8, pitched a seven-hitter.

Yankees 5, Blue Jays 1 at New York (night game):
Maintaining a one-game lead in the East division, the Yankees beat the Blue Jays, 5-1, as Catfish Hunter picked up his ninth victory in 10 decisions. In his last 79 innings, the righthander had a 1.71 earned run average. With one out in the second inning, Graig Nettles and Chris Chambliss singled and Roy White reached first safely on an error by third baseman Roy Howell. A sacrifice fly by Bucky Dent drove in one run and Willie Randolph followed with a two-run single. Nettles hit a homer in the third and Reggie Jackson added another in the fifth.

Rangers 10, Twins 5 at Texas (night game):
The Rangers exploded for five runs in the seventh inning and went on to subdue the Twins, 10-5.

Astros 4, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Behind the combined pitching of Vern Ruhle and Joe Sambito, the Astros shut out the Braves, 4-0. All runs came in the eighth inning. After three singles loaded the bases, Bruce Bochy drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. After a walk reloaded the sacks, Jeff Leonard slashed a three-run double. It was the second straight game the Astros shut out the Braves.

Reds 5, Dodgers 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
A homer by George Foster highlighted a four-run eighth inning that carried the Reds to a 5-3 decision over the Dodgers. The Reds trailed, 3-1, going into the bottom of the eighth when Foster unloaded a two-run shot, scoring Ken Griffey, who had walked. Johnny Bench drew a walk before Dan Driessen and Champ Summers followed with singles to give the decision to reliever Pedro Borbon.

Phillies 5, Expos 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Four hits by Jerry Martin paced the Phillies to a 5-4 victory over the Expos. A single by Greg Luzinski opened the Phils' second inning and Jose Cardenal then drew a base on balls. A double by Martin scored Luzinski and a sacrifice fly by Ted Sizemore plated Cardenal.

Pirates 8, Cubs 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A six-run explosion in the sixth inning lifted the Pirates to an 8-3 thumping of the Cubs and kept the Bucs mathematically alive in the East division race.

Giants 1, Padres 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Unfurling his second straight shutout and sixth of the season -- tops in the league -- Bob Knepper pitched the Giants to a 1-0 triumph over the Padres. The Giants scored the only run of game in the second inning on singles by Darrell Evans and Larry Herndon and an infield out by Roger Metzger. The Giants completed the home portion of their schedule with a total attendance of 1,740,477, an increase of more than one million over 1977.
