Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, White Sox 3 at Baltimore (day game):
Marking Earl Weaver's 1,000th victory as manager, the Orioles opened their season by defeating the White Sox, 5-3, behind the three-hit pitching of Jim Palmer. The White Sox nicked Palmer for two runs in the second inning, but the Orioles came back to take command with three in their half. Rich Dauer batted in the tying pair with a bases-loaded single and, after Rick Dempsey singled Dauer to third, Mark Belanger hit a sacrifice fly to put the Orioles ahead. Doug DeCinces, who batted in at least one run in each of the last 10 games of the 1978 season, made it 11 in a row with an infield out that produced what proved to be the Orioles' deciding tally in the fifth.

Twins 5, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
Only 10,387 were in the stands when the A's opened their season with a 5-3 loss to the Twins. Last year's opener in Oakland drew 17,283. The Twins combined singles by Mike Cubbage and Ron Jackson, a double by Glenn Adams and a single by Butch Wynegar for three runs in the sixth inning and added the deciding pair in the seventh on a groundout by Cubbage and a single by Roy Smalley.

Mariners 14, Angels 6 at Seattle (night game):
The Mariners set club records for most runs scored in one inning and most in one game while hammering the Angels, 14-6, for their second straight victory. After Bruce Bochte hit a two-run homer off Nolan Ryan in the first inning, the Mariners exploded for nine runs in the second in the greatest scoring outburst in their history. Bill Stein homered with two men on base and Julio Cruz, who batted twice during the stanza, also drove in three runs with a single and double.

Giants 7, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Led by Bill Madlock and Darrell Evans, the Giants defeated the Reds, 7-2. Madlock, who hit a single and triple and also reached base on an error, drove in three runs and scored three times. Evans had a double and two singles and accounted for two RBIs. Dan Driessen homered for the Reds.

Astros 2, Braves 1 at Houston (night game):
Although held to only three hits by Phil Niekro, the Astros scored two runs in the first inning on a single by Enos Cabell and won the season opener from the Braves, 2-1. Terry Puhl walked to lead off for the Astros, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Jose Cruz walked with two out and stole second before Cabell's single drove in both runners.

Dodgers 10, Padres 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A grand slam by Joe Ferguson in the first inning and a three-run homer by Reggie Smith in the fourth powered the Dodgers to a 10-1 victory over the Padres. After Don Sutton gave up the Padres' run to start the game, Davey Lopes singled in the Dodgers' half, Smith was hit by a pitch and Steve Garvey singled to tie the score. With two out, Dusty Baker walked to load the bases and Ferguson cleared the sacks with his homer off Randy Jones.

Expos 3, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Scoring an unearned run in the 10th inning without the benefit of a hit, the Expos defeated the Pirates, 3-2, in the season opener for both clubs. Gary Carter homered for the Expos and Ed Ott for the Pirates to help forge a 2-2 tie. In the 10th, Kent Tekulve, working in relief for the Pirates, nicked Andre Dawson with a pitch. Willie Stargell failed to hold a pickoff throw, allowing Dawson to advance to second. Then, with two out, Dale Berra at third missed a grounder by Ellis Valentine as Dawson scored.

Cardinals 8, Phillies 1 at St. Louis (night game):
John Denny pitched a five-hitter and Ken Reitz and Tony Scott each drove in three runs as the Cardinals opened their season by defeating the Phillies, 8-1. Garry Maddox homered for the Phils' lone tally. The game attracted a crowd of 40,526. Cardinal ticket manager Mike Bertani said the sale of at least 10,000 tickets could be credited to Pete Rose, who made his debut in a Phillies' uniform and collected a single and also walked in four trips to the plate.
