Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 14, Indians 4 at Boston (day game):
The Red Sox trundled out their heavy artillery to bombard the Indians, 14-4. George Scott had a two-run single in the first inning and a triple by Jerry Remy and single by Rick Burleson produced another pair in the second. Burleson also had a two-run single to cap a three-run third inning. Fred Lynn hit a two-run homer in the sixth. A two-run double by Carl Yastrzemski, RBI double by Gary Allenson and sacrifice fly by Jim Rice highlighted a five-run seventh.

Yankees 6, White Sox 5 at Chicago (day game):
Two runs in the ninth inning enabled the Yankees to edge the White Sox, 6-5. The score was 4-4 entering the final frame when the rally started with a one-out single by Chris Chambliss. One out later, a double by Mickey Rivers scored Chambliss. Willie Randolph then drove in Rivers with a bloop single to right. The White Sox tallied once in the bottom of the frame, but Rich Gossage came on to choke off the comeback.

Brewers 4, Orioles 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Winning his third straight game, Mike Caldwell outdueled Jim Palmer as the Brewers picked up a 4-2 decision over the Orioles. The Brewers scored in the first inning on singles by Cecil Cooper and Larry Hisle and a double by Sixto Lezcano. They added another in the third on a walk to Paul Molitor, double by Robin Yount and grounder by Cooper. Hisle connected for a two-run homer in the eighth. The Orioles' runs came in the ninth on a leadoff homer by Eddie Murray, double by Doug DeCinces and singles by Gary Roenicke and Rick Dempsey, but Caldwell induced Rich Dauer to bounce into a game-ending double play.

Angels 8, A's 1 at Oakland (day game):
Pounding three pitchers for 17 hits, the Angels reeled off their fifth straight victory, thumping the A's, 8-1. Rod Carew drove in the Angels' initial run with a first-inning single, blasted a two-run homer in the fifth and added an RBI single in the sixth. Brian Downing had five hits, including three doubles.

Twins 18, Mariners 6 at Seattle (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Twins pounded out 20 hits in crushing the Mariners, 18-6. Butch Wynegar drove in three runs with a single, double and sacrifice fly. Willie Norwood hit a single, double and homer, Rob Wilfong had two doubles and a single, and Jose Morales smacked a three-run homer.

Tigers 11, Rangers 6 at Texas (day game):
A seven-run explosion in the ninth inning propelled the Tigers to an 11-6 triumph over the Rangers, who suffered their first loss of the season after six straight victories. The Rangers led, 6-4, in the ninth with nobody on and two out when Lou Whitaker drew a bases on halls from Sparky Lyle. A single by Steve Kemp and walk to Jason Thompson loaded the bases and brought on Jim Kern to relieve Lyle. An infield single by pinch-hitter Tim Corcoran scored Whitaker and a single by Phil Mankowski drove home two more. A single by Lynn Jones produced the fourth run of the frame, and after a fielder's choice, the final pair came across on a double by Lance Parrish.

Royals 12, Blue Jays 10 at Toronto (day game):
Rallying for four runs in the eighth inning, the Royals outlasted the Blue Jays, 12-10, in a 34-hit slugfest. After the Jays took the lead, 10-8, in the seventh, doubles by George Brett and Hal McRae and a single by Amos Otis knotted the count. After two out, a single by John Wathan plated Otis with the Royals' go-ahead run and a double by Clint Hurdle scored Wathan with an insurance marker. K.C. scored six times in the second inning with Brett and Darrell Porter each driving in two runs. Rico Carty had a solo homer for the Jays in the third and an RBI single in the fourth.

Braves 11, Dodgers 4 at Los Angeles (day game):
Driving in three runs apiece, Barry Bonnell and Jerry Royster led the Braves to an 11-4 rout of the Dodgers. Bonnell accounted for his first RBI with a single in the second inning and crashed a two-run homer in the eighth. Royster had a sacrifice fly in the second and added a two-run double in the eighth. Gene Garber, hurling the last four innings for the Braves, posted his third save of the young campaign.

Cubs 5, Expos 1 at Montreal (day game):
Posting their first victory of the season, the Cubs downed the Expos, 5-1, behind the six-hit pitching of Lynn McGlothen. The Cubs tied the game in the sixth inning when Bill Buckner knocked in a run with a double and Dave Kingman followed with a homer.

[DH] Phillies 3, Mets 2 (day game) / Phillies 6, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
The Phillies swept a doubleheader from the Mets, taking the opener, 3-2, and winning the nightcap, 6-3. In the first game, with the score tied, 2-2, going into the sixth inning, Manny Trillo singled with two out and continued to second when Lee Mazzilli misplayed the ball. Bob Boone followed with a single to drive in the winning run. In the second game, Mike Schmidt provided the deciding blow with a three-run homer in the eighth following walks to Larry Bowa and Greg Luzinski.

Cardinals 9, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Erupting for five runs in the 10th inning, the Cardinals prevailed, 9-4, over the Pirates. The winning rally began with a one-out single by Mike Dimmel, his first major league hit. A single by Mike Phillips moved Dimmel to third and the tie-breaking run scored when left fielder Bill Robinson dropped a fly ball off the bat of Bernie Carbo. Singles by Garry Templeton and Tony Scott produced another run before Keith Hernandez clinched the game with a bases-loaded double and three RBIs.

[DH] Padres 6, Reds 3 (day game) / Reds 7, Padres 5 at San Diego (day game):
The Padres won the first game, 6-3, and the Reds copped the nightcap, 7-5, in a split of a doubleheader. The Padres capitalized on five errors in the opener. Misplays by third baseman Ray Knight and first baseman Dan Driessen allowed a pair of runs in the second inning and the third tally of the frame came across on a bases-loaded walk to Jerry Turner. An error by shortstop Dave Concepcion set up a two-run Padre sixth inning that was capped by a two-run double by John D'Acquisto. In the second game, the Reds trailed, 5-3, entering the sixth stanza but rocked relievers Mark Lee and Rollie Fingers for six consecutive singles. The tie-breaking tally was produced on a single by Junior Kennedy.

[DH] Astros 4, Giants 3 (day game) / Astros 9, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Jose Cruz drove in eight runs as the Astros toppled the Giants in a doubleheader, 4-3 and 9-1. The Astros snapped a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning of the opener when Terry Puhl singled, stole second, went to third on an infield out and scored on a grounder by Denny Walling. The Astros breezed in the nightcap. A two-run single by Enos Cabell in the first inning started the rout and Cruz clouted a homer in the fifth to make the score 5-0.
