Red Sox 5, Brewers 3 at Boston (day game):
Chuck Rainey permitted just four hits over 7 2/3 innings in his first major league start and was the winner as the Red Sox defeated the Brewers, 5-3. Four unearned runs in the fifth inning proved decisive. With two out and Rick Burleson on third, Jim Rice reached first and Burleson scored on a throwing error by Robin Yount. Carl Yastrzemski drew a base on balls and George Scott cracked a two-bagger to score Rice. Yastrzemski and Scott then scored on a single by Jack Brohamer.

Angels 6, Twins 4 at Minnesota (day game):
Extending their winning streak to eight games -- their longest in 15 years -- the Angels came from behind to defeat the Twins, 6-4. The Twins led, 4-3, entering the eighth inning. but reliever Mike Marshall walked Rod Carew to lead off the frame and then hit Don Baylor with a pitch. A sacrifice by Joe Rudi advanced the runners and after Willie Aikens flied out, a single by Brian Downing scored Carew and Baylor. A solo homer by Carney Lansford in the ninth inning provided an insurance tally.

Orioles 6, Yankees 3 at New York (day game):
Ending their six-game losing streak, the Orioles prevailed over the Yankees, 6-3, as Jim Palmer picked up his 217th career victory. After spotting the Yankees a 3-1 lead, the Orioles tied the game in the third inning on a two-run single by Ken Singleton and went ahead in the fifth when Singleton doubled and Lee May singled. Eddie Murray singled home two insurance runs in the seventh.

Cubs 3, Cardinals 2 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs capitalized on two errors and edged the Cardinals, 3-2. The score was 2-2 going into the bottom of the fourth inning when Bobby Murcer drew a base on balls, advanced to third on a single by Barry Foote and scored on a wild throw by Cardinal third baseman Ken Reitz. The Cubs' first tally in the second inning also resulted from an error. Steve Ontiveros singled, went to third when left fielder Lou Brock misplayed ball for a two-base error and tallied on a single by Murcer. The Cubs' other run come on a homer by Ivan DeJesus in the third.

Reds 2, Braves 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Recording his 48th career shutout, Tom Seaver pitched the Reds to a 2-0 triumph over the Braves, allowing only two hits. The Reds' scoring came on homers by Ken Griffey in the fourth inning and by George Foster in the seventh.

Giants 14, Padres 10 at San Diego (day game):
Marc Hill and Terry Whitfield drove in four runs apiece and Vida Blue gained his fourth straight victory as the Giants outlasted the Padres, 14-10. Three of Hill's RBIs came off a homer in the third inning. Whitfield singled home two runs in the sixth and tripled home two more in the seventh, while Bill North added a pair of doubles, driving in two runs. Losing pitcher Mickey Lolich, although lasting only 2 2/3 innings, notched two strikeouts to run his career total to 2,819, tying him with Cy Young for fifth place on the all-time list.
