Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 4, White Sox 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Two doubles and two RBIs by Frank White sparked the Royals to a 4-3 victory over the White Sox, ending the K. C. five-game losing streak. The Royals scored in the first inning when White doubled on a ball misplayed by left fielder Junior Moore, took third on a single by John Wathan and scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Al Cowens. The Royals added three more runs in the fifth frame. Joe Zdeb singled and scored on a double by Freddie Patek. Willie Wilson followed with a bunt single and George Brett walked to load the bases. White then hit a two-run double.

Rangers 5, Blue Jays 0 at Texas (night game):
Combining on a three-hitter, Doyle Alexander and Jim Kern hurled the Rangers to a 5-0 blanking of the Blue Jays. Texas got three runs in their first turn at bat. Billy Sample walked with one out and Al Oliver stroked a single. Blue Jay second baseman Dave McKay booted a potential double-play grounder by Buddy Bell, allowing Sample to score from third. A single by Richie Zisk plated Oliver and a sacrifice fly by Oscar Gamble drove home Bell.

Cardinals 3, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
A single by Jerry Mumphrey -- his first hit of the season -- lifted the Cardinals to a 3-2, 10-inning victory over the Braves. The score was 2-2 in the 10th when Tony Scott began the winning rally with a single. He stole second, continued to third when catcher Dale Murphy threw the ball into center field and scored on Mumphrey's blow. Phil Niekro had the Cards shut out, 2-0, going into the ninth inning but they tied the game on two-out RBI singles by Bernie Carbo and Garry Templeton.

Phillies 4, Dodgers 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
With Mike Schmidt driving home the tying and winning runs, the Phillies edged the Dodgers, 4-3, in 10 innings. The Dodgers led, 3-2, going into the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Phillies tied the score on a single by Schmidt following walks to Larry Bowa and Greg Luzinski. Bowa opened the bottom of the 10th with a base on balls and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Pete Rose was given an intentional walk, Schmidt delivered the game-winning hit off Lance Rautzhan.
