Red Sox 2, Angels 0 at California (day game):
Three Boston pitchers limited the Angels to four hits as the Red Sox posted a 2-0 whitewashing of the Angels. The first Bosox run came in the second inning when Carl Yastrzemski walked, advanced to third on a single by Jim Dwyer and scored on a sacrifice fly by Butch Hobson. The second tally came in the fifth when Hobson reached first safely on an error by Carney Lansford, moved to second on an infield single by Jerry Remy and scored on a single to center by Rick Burleson. Bill Campbell retired Joe Rudi on a fly ball with the bases loaded for the final out of the game.

Rangers 10, White Sox 0 at Chicago (day game):
With Dock Ellis and Jim Kern combining on a four-hitter, the Rangers trampled the White Sox, 10-0. Buddy Bell, Billy Sample and Al Oliver each drove in two runs. A two-run double by Bell highlighted a three-run eighth inning. Bell then scored on a single by Oliver, who added an RBI hit in the Rangers' five-run ninth. Sample stroked a two-run single in the final frame.

Twins 5, Tigers 3 at Detroit (day game):
Collecting four hits, Roy Smalley paced the Twins to a 5-3 victory over the Tigers. Smalley also scored three times -- on a first-inning single by Butch Wynegar, a third-inning two-run double by Glenn Adams and on a solo homer in the fourth. Rob Wilfong capped a three-run Twin third with an RBI single.

Indians 5, Royals 4 at Kansas City (day game):
A four-run outburst in the fifth inning enabled the Indians to snap their four-game losing streak by edging the Royals, 5-4, and end the Royals' six-game winning streak. The fifth-inning rally began with a one-out triple by Rick Manning. After Bobby Bonds walked, Andre Thornton followed with an RBI single. Toby Harrah then drove home Bonds and Thornton with a double and tallied the ultimate winning run when Royal shortstop Freddie Patek made a wild throw on a grounder by Duane Kuiper. Sid Monge came on in relief of Rick Wise in the ninth inning and killed a Royal rally by picking pinch-runner Willie Wilson off first base.

Orioles 13, A's 1 at Oakland (day game):
Scoring 10 runs in the seventh inning, the Orioles pounded out a 13-1 victory over the A's. Gary Roenicke and Ken Singleton both belted three-run homers in the big frame. Earlier, Kiko Garcia had a two-run round-tripper in the second stanza. Lee May and Rich Dauer clouted solo homers. Oriole starter Jim Palmer was forced to leave game in the first inning with a recurring back injury.

Mariners 6, Yankees 5 at Seattle (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Mariners edged the Yankees, 6-5, rallying for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Julio Cruz started by drawing a one-out walk. After Bobby Valentine fanned, Tom Paciorek singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Joe Simpson. A walk to Leon Roberts loaded the sacks. Ron Davis relieved Paul Mirabella on the mound for the Yankees and Willie Horton lined his first pitch to left for a single, scoring Cruz and Simpson. Horton reached second on the throw to the plate and after Ruppert Jones received an intentional base on balls, Dick Tidrow relieved Davis. Bruce Bochte then lined Tidrow's first offering down rthe ight field line for the winning run.

[DH] Brewers 3, Blue Jays 0 (day game) / Blue Jays 5, Brewers 3 at Toronto (day game):
Dividing a doubleheader, the Brewers won the lidlifter, 3-0, behind the six-hit pitching of Mike Caldwell, while the Blue Jays captured the nightcap, 5-3. The Brewers scored twice in the seventh inning of the first game on a triple by Sixto Lezcano after a walk to Larry Hisle, and the other run on a sacrifice fly by Paul Molitor. Gorman Thomas blasted a homer in the eighth. The Jays trailed, 3-2, going into the bottom of the eighth in the second game before going ahead to win with consecutive homers by Rick Bosetti and Bob Robertson.

Cubs 6, Braves 5 at Atlanta (day game):
Staging a Garrison finish, the Cubs roared from behind with six runs in the ninth inning to overcome the Braves, 6-5. Dave Kingman led off the rally with a single and Steve Ontiveros walked. Two outs later, a pass to Ted Sizemore loaded the bases and brought Gene Garber on in relief of Larry McWilliams. Tim Blackwell lined a two-run single to right and pinch-hitter Larry Biittner added a run with the single. Steve Dillard ran for Biittner and scored behind Blackwell when Bobby Murcer capped the explosion with a home run over the right field fence.

Reds 5, Cardinals 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
Behind the brilliant relief pitching of Paul Moskau, who took over after Tom Seaver suffered a back sprain in the third inning, the Reds defeated the Cardinals, 5-1. A four-run fourth inning proved decisive for the Reds. A walk to Johnny Bench and a double by Ray Knight tied the score at 1-1. Cesar Geronimo followed with a single and Moskau also singled to drive in his own deciding run. A single by Ken Griffey and double by Dave Concepcion added another pair. George Foster blasted a homer in the fifth.

Expos 7, Giants 5 at Montreal (day game):
Two home runs by Gary Carter and another by Ellis Valentine powered the Expos to a 7-5 victory over the sagging Giants, who suffered their seventh straight defeat. Carter had an inside-the-park homer with two mates aboard in the first inning and a solo blast in the seventh. Valentine put the Expos ahead to stay in the fourth frame with a three-run clout that followed a double by Larry Parrish and walk to Chris Speier.

[DH] Dodgers 8, Mets 3 (day game) / Mets 6, Dodgers 3 at New York (day game):
The Dodgers won the first game of a doubleheader, 8-3, but the Mets came back to take the second game, 6-3. In the opener, Dusty Baker drove in five runs with a two-run single in the fourth inning, a bases-loaded walk in the fifth and a two-run homer in the seventh. A single by Richie Hebner in the fifth inning of the second game broke a 3-3 tie and the Mets increased their margin with a homer by Joel Youngblood in the sixth and a run-scoring single by Lee Mazzilli in the seventh.

Phillies 4, Padres 3 at Philadelphia (day game):
A single by Manny Trillo capped a two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth that enabled the Phillies to edge the Padres, 4-3. The Phils trailed, 3-2, when Mike Schmidt walked in the ninth, stopped at third on a double by Garry Maddox and scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Trillo then lashed a single, plating Maddox with the winning tally.

Pirates 10, Astros 5 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Driving in three runs apiece, Willie Stargell and Omar Moreno sparked the Pirates to a 10-5 victory over the Astros. Don Robinson, who started for the Pirates, left the game with a shoulder injury after yielding a leadoff homer to Terry Puhl. Bruce Kison relieved, pitched 7 1/3 innings, and got credit for his first victory of the season.
