Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 2, Yankees 1 at California (night game):
A single by Don Baylor drove home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Angels a 2-1 triumph over the Yankees, sending the Bronx Bombers to their fifth straight defeat. Rick Miller began the winning rally with a one-out single and advanced to third on a single by Dan Ford. A walk to Rod Carew loaded the bases and Baylor then stroked a single to plate Miller with the winning marker.

Brewers 8, Indians 0 at Cleveland (night game):
The brilliant pitching of Jim Slaton and slugging of Gorman Thomas and Ben Oglivie keyed the Brewers' 8-0 whitewashing of the Indians. Slaton yielded only a fourth-inning single to Bobby Bonds and a ninth-inning single to Bo Diaz. Thomas blasted a three-run homer in the seventh inning (his sixth in seven games) while Oglivie had a solo clout in the second frame and a two-run shot to cap the Brewers' five-run seventh.

Rangers 8, Royals 7 at Kansas City (night game):
Helped by Kansas City errors, Texas downed the Royals, 8-7. The score was 6-6 going into the sixth inning when Jim Sundberg reached first base safely on a wild throw by Royal third baseman George Brett. A sacrifice bunt moved Sundberg to second and he scored on a single by Bump Wills. Wills stole second and took third when second baseman U.L. Washington failed to handle catcher Darrell Porter's throw. Nelson Norman then delivered a perfect suicide squeeze bunt down the first base line to score Wills. The victim of the poor infield play was reliever Steve Busby, who turned in the strongest performance on his comeback trail following his July, 1976, shoulder operation.

A's 5, Red Sox 4 at Oakland (night game):
Jeff Newman played the hero's role as the A's gained a 5-4, 11-inning triumph over the Red Sox. With two out in the ninth inning and the A's trailing, 4-3, Newman cracked a home run off Bill Campbell to tie the score. Then, in the 11th inning, Newman stroked a single off Dick Drago to send Mitchell Page home with the winning run. Page had singled and stolen second. An intentional walk to Wayne Gross preceded Newman's decisive single.

Orioles 8, Mariners 7 at Seattle (night game):
The third RBI of game by Eddie Murray lifted the Orioles to an 8-7, 10-inning victory over the Mariners. The Mariners had tied the contest in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run pinch-homer by Joe Simpson. Billy Smith opened the Birds' 10th with a single and was forced at second by Al Bumbry, who moved to second on a single by Rich Dauer. A walk to Larry Harlow loaded the bases and Murray then hit an infield groundout while Bumbry scored.

Twins 6, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (night game):
Homers by Butch Wynegar and Rob Wilfong powered the Twins to a 6-3 decison over the Blue Jays. Wilfong belted a two-run round-tripper in the second inning and Wynegar blasted his two-run shot in the eighth, following a double by Ken Landreaux. Wynegar also had an RBI single in the third inning.

Expos 8, Dodgers 4 at Montreal (day game):
Erupting for four runs in the first inning, the Expos went on to an 8-4 triumph over the Dodgers. In the Expos' first turn at bat, Warren Cromartie singled, extending his hitting streak to equal the club record of 18 games, and scored on a double by Tony Perez. A double by Gary Carter delivered Perez and Ellis Valentine followed with a triple. A double by Larry Parrish capped the rally. Andre Dawson clouted a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

Mets 4, Padres 3 at New York (night game):
A seventh-inning single by Doug Flynn snapped a 3-3 tie and lifted the Mets to a 4-3 triumph over the Padres. Joel Youngblood stroked a one-out single off reliever Bob Shirley, now 0-4. Following an intentional walk to Steve Henderson, Flynn bounced a single up the middle. The Padres finished the game under protest, claiming that Met manager Joe Torre, who had been ejected in the third inning over a balk dispute, was illegally in the bullpen instead of the clubhouse after being heaved.

Phillies 4, Giants 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Driving in three runs, Greg Luzinski sparked the Phillies to a 4-1 victory over the Giants, who suffered their eighth straight setback. Luzinski had a first-inning single that scored Pete Rose, who had singled and stolen second. Garry Maddox smacked a solo homer in the second inning and Luzinski had a two-run round-tripper in the third, following an infield single by Rose.

Astros 6, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (night game):
A two-run homer by Terry Puhl capped a four-run ninth inning that carried the Astros to a 6-5 come-from-behind triumph over the Cardinals. The Cards led, 4-2, entering the ninth and brought on Tom Bruno to assume the mound chores. A leadoff double by Enos Cabell and successive singles by Bob Watson and Art Howe quickly sent Bruno to the showers in favor of Buddy Schultz. A sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Jeff Leonard tied the game and, one out later, Puhl unloaded over the right field wall. The Cards filled the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth but could get only one run. Free tickets for a "Busch Basch" promotion swelled the attendance to 50,983 for the game.
