Brewers 5, Blue Jays 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
Tom Underwood issued successive bases-loaded passes to Gorman Thomas and Cecil Cooper in the ninth inning, forcing in two runs and handing the Brewers a 5-4 victory over the Blue Jays. Thomas hit a three-run homer in the third inning to put the Brewers ahead, 3-2, but the Blue Jays regained the lead when Rick Bosetti singled and Otto Velez homered in the fifth. In the Brewers' ninth, Robin Yount and Dick Davis singled and Charlie Moore was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Paul Molitor forced Yount at the plate, but Underwood then lost his control and the game.
Twins 7, Tigers 6 at Minnesota (night game):
A homer by Roy Smalley in the eighth inning enabled the Twins to extend their winning streak to five games with a 7-6 victory over the Tigers. Mike Marshall, making his 14th appearance of the season, pitched the last 2 1/3 innings and gained his third victory against one defeat to go along with nine saves. The Twins also had a homer by Rob Wilfong. Ken Landreaux drove in two runs with a single and double. Jason Thompson hit a two-run homer for the Tigers. Rusty Staub, playing in his first game since ending his contract dispute, had one hit in three official trips and picked up an RBI on a walk with the bases loaded.
Dodgers 5, Phillies 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Making his first start of the season, Rick Sutcliffe pitched the Dodgers to a 5-2 victory over the Phillies. The Dodgers broke a 1-1 tie and beat Steve Carlton with two runs in the sixth inning on singles by Bill Russell, Steve Garvey, Joe Ferguson and Derrel Thomas. Mike Schmidt homered for the Phillies in the ninth.
Padres 10, Expos 2 at San Diego (night game):
Jerry Turner, Dave Winfield and Dan Briggs hit homers as the Padres stopped the Expos' seven-game winning streak, 10-2. Warren Cromartie, who had hit safely in 19 straight games for a Montreal club record, was collared in three official trips but reached base on an error in the fifth inning and scored on a single by Gary Carter to put the Expos ahead, 2-1. Turner tied the score with his homer in the sixth, setting off a six-run outburst by the Padres.
Giants 7, Mets 5 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants smashed three homers in one inning and powered their way to a 7-5 victory over the Mets. Ed Kranepool batted in three runs for the Mets, who took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the fourth inning. The Giants erupted in their half, starting with a homer by Darrell Evans. After Marc Hill singled, Johnnie LeMaster also hit for the circuit. Ed Halicki popped up, but Bill North followed with the Giants' third round-tripper. LeMaster also batted in another run in the game with a sacrifice fly.
Astros 4, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (day game):
Enos Cabell hit a homer and Alan Ashby drove in two runs with a double and single to provide the Astros with a 4-1 victory over the Cardinals. Joe Niekro, after four failures, gained credit for his second victory of the season, pitching 7 1/3 innings and allowing seven hits. Lou Brock and Keith Hernandez had three apiece. Brock's hits brought his career total to 2,920.
