A's 5, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
A triple play highlighted the A's 5-3 triumph over the Orioles. In the Oriole third, Ken Singleton walked and Eddie Murray singled. Gary Roenicke grounded sharply to Wayne Gross at third, who stepped on the base for one out, threw to second baseman Mickey Klutts, who relayed the ball to first, completing the triple play. The A's snapped a 3-3 tie in the seventh when Gross led off with a walk, took third on a single by Mario Guerrero and scored on a groundout by Mitchell Page. A two-out single by Derek Bryant scored Guerrero with an insurance tally.

Red Sox 9, Angels 4 at Boston (night game):
A six-run explosion in the first inning propelled the Red Sox to a 9-4 victory over the Angels. Singles by Jerry Remy, Rick Burleson and Fred Lynn produced the first Bosox run and, after Jim Rice flied out, Angel right fielder Don Baylor dropped Carl Yastrzemski's fly ball, allowing Burleson to score. Following a walk to George Scott, Butch Hobson lined a two-bagger to left-center, clearing the bases. The final run of the inning came in when Remy singled home Hobson.

Tigers 5, White Sox 4 at Detroit (night game):
A single by Lance Parrish capped a two-run eighth inning that carried the Tigers to a 5-4 victory over the White Sox. The Tigers trailed, 4-3, going into the bottom of the eighth, when Rusty Staub opened that frame by being hit by a pitch and was replaced by pinch-runner mark Wagner. Wagner advanced to second on a single by Steve Kemp and scored on a single by Jason Thompson. Mike Proly relieved Steve Trout on the mound for the Sox and immediately yielded the single to Parrish that plated Kemp with the winning run.

Twins 6, Blue Jays 1 at Minnesota (night game):
A four-run outburst in the third inning propelled the Twins to a 6-1 verdict over the Blue Jays. In the Twin fourth, consecutive singles by Butch Wynegar, Roy Smalley and Ken Landreaux produced the first run. Walks to Mike Cubbage and Ron Jackson forced in another and a single by Rob Wilfong produced the third run. The final run of the inning scored when Willie Norwood bounced into a forceout. Wynegar clouted a leadoff homer in the sixth frame.

Mariners 12, Yankees 4 at New York (night game):
A grand slam by Dan Meyer, who drove in a club-record seven runs, powered the Mariners to a 12-4 thrashing of the Yankees. With the score 3-3 in the fifth inning, Julio Cruz led off with a base on balls. Pinch-hitter Leon Roberts followed with a two-bagger and Bruce Bochte drew a walk to load the bases. Meyer then unloaded a homer to right-center.

Royals 10, Rangers 6 at Texas (night game):
Erupting for five runs in the sixth inning, the Royals overcame an early Texas lead and downed the Rangers, 10-6. The rally began with a single by Pete LaCock and a double by Clint Hurdle. George Brett and Amos Otis drove home runs and others scored on a wild pitch and an error by Buddy Bell. The Royals picked up three more markers in the eighth on an RBI single by Darrell Porter and a two-run homer by Al Cowens.

Pirates 4, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
A leadoff homer by Bill Robinson in the sixth snapped a 2-2 tie and triggered the Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Braves. It was the fifth loss in a row for Atlanta. John Candelaria gained his eighth victory in 10 decisions over the Braves.

Dodgers 5, Mets 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
A four-run outburst in the fifth inning carried the Dodgers to a 5-2 decision over the Mets. After Steve Yeager led off the fifth with a single and advanced to second when Met pitcher Pete Falcone threw late to second on Burt Hooton's sacrifice bunt, Davey Lopes walked to load the sacks and Bill Russell singled to center to score Yeager and Hooton. A single by Reggie Smith plated Lopes and Russell.

Phillies 11, Padres 6 at San Diego (night game):
Steve Carlton became the winningest lefthander in Phillie history (133 wins) as his teammates assaulted four San Diego pitchers for 13 hits and an 11-6 victory over the Padres. Carlton helped his own cause with an RBI single in the second inning. Larry Bowa's sacrifice fly plated another in sthe ame frame. The Phils added three more runs in the fourth on a triple by Bob Boone, double by Ramon Aviles, single by Bake McBride and double by Pete Rose.
