Orioles 3, A's 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Behind the three-hit hurling of Dennis Martinez, the Orioles downed the A's, 3-1. The Orioles' first run came in the third inning when Al Bumbry walked and scored on a single by Mark Belanger and subsequent error by left fielder Larry Murray. Gary Roenicke smashed a homer in the fourth and singles by Roenicke, Rich Dauer and Benny Ayala produced the Orioles' final tally in the sixth.
Angels 5, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
Three hits by Brian Downing, including a home run, paced the Angels to a 5-3 triumph over the Red Sox. The Angels took the lead in the first inning on a double by Rod Carew and single by Don Baylor, and scored two more runs in the second inning on consecutive doubles by Downing and Carney Lansford and a single by Rick Miller. In the third Joe Rudi singled and Downing clouted his homer.
White Sox 5, Royals 2 at Chicago (night game):
A three-run outburst in the eighth inning lifted the White Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Royals. The score was 2-2 entering the bottom of the eighth when Claudell Washington began the winning surge with a one-out single. After Chet Lemon walked, Al Hrabosky replaced Paul Splittorff on the mound for the Royals and yielded an RBI single to pinch-hitter Eric Soderholm. Rusty Torres then singled in another run and Wayne Nordhagen knocked out Hrabosky with a single to drive home the inning's third counter.
Indians 8, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
Eric Wilkins got credit for his first major league victory with the help of Don Hood when the Indians defeated the Brewers, 8-1. The Tribe took the lead in the fourth inning when Gary Alexander walked and Toby Harrah, Wayne Cage and Ron Pruitt followed with singles. A sacrifice fly by Alexander produced another marker in the fifth and the Indians broke the game open with five runs in the eighth.
Yankees 8, Mariners 1 at New York (day game):
Notching his seventh straight victory, Tommy John pitched the Yankees to an 8-1 verdict over the Mariners. The Yanks picked up two runs in the first inning on a leadoff homer by Mickey Rivers, a three-base error by Mariner outfielder Dan Meyer and a single by Reggie Jackson. A sacrifice fly by Rivers and run-scoring single by Willie Randolph added another pair in the second stanza and singles by Graig Nettles, Jackson and Jerry Narron and a sacrifice fly by Bucky Dent plated two more in the third.
Cubs 9, Reds 8 at Chicago (day game):
A homer by Dave Kingman in the seventh lifted the Cubs into a 7-7 tie with the Reds before the game was suspended after nine innings because of a time limit. The Cubs had to catch a plane at 6:05 p.m. The game was resumed in the 10th inning July 23, the next time the Reds visited Chicago.
Cardinals 3, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
A double by Ted Simmons keyed a two-run seventh inning that gave the Cardinals a 3-1 victory over the Astros. The game was scoreless when Keith Hernandez stroked a one-out single. Simmons brought Hernandez home with his two-bagger and then scored on a single by George Hendrick. The Redbirds added another run in the eighth when Ken Oberkfell singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice and tallied on a single by Garry Templeton.
Dodgers 14, Mets 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Led by Bill Russell, who hit a home run and two singles and drove in five runs, the Dodgers routed the Mets, 14-1. The Dodgers scored three runs in the first inning on a single by Davey Lopes, a stolen base, a single by Russell and a homer by Ron Cey. The Dodgers batted around in the third with a two-run homer by Russell highlighting the bombardment.
Phillies 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (day game):
Completing the four-game series sweep, the Phillies edged the Padres, 3-2. Larry Bowa singled and Pete Rose doubled for a run in the first inning. Nino Espinosa helped himself with a run-scoring grounder in the second. Bowa singled in the fifth, advanced to second on a groundout by Rose and tallied the Phils' deciding run on a single by Greg Luzinski. The victory was the Phillies' seventh in a row. Gaylord Perry hit a homer but absorbed the defeat.
Expos 3, Giants 0 at San Francisco (day game):
A three-hitter by Steve Rogers carried the Expos to a 3-0 blanking of the Giants. Andre Dawson reached first base on an error by third baseman Darrell Evans to open the game and Rodney Scott followed with a homer. Scott singled and scored on a double by Warren Cromartie in the third for the other tally.
