Red Sox 8, A's 2 at Boston (day game):
With Chuck Rainey pitching a three-hitter, the Red Sox breezed to an 8-2 decision over the A's. In the second inning, the Red Sox loaded the bases on a single by Butch Hobson, double by Dwight Evans and walk to Gary Allenson. A sacrifice fly by Jerry Remy produced one run and a single by Rick Burleson added another. Two more tallies then crossed the plate on a wild pitch and a pair of errors by catcher Jeff Newman. The Red Sox picked up three more runs in the third when Jim Rice doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error by Newman. After a walk to Hobson, George Scott belted a homer to give the Sox a 7-0 lead. Hobson accounted for the last Red Sox run with a round-tripper in the seventh. Dwayne Murphy produced both of the A's runs with a homer.

Royals 14, White Sox 5 at Chicago (day game):
Unloading a 19-hit attack, the Royals routed the White Sox, 14-5. With the score 3-3, the Royals erupted for five runs in the fourth inning. A two-run single by George Brett and home run by John Wathan highlighted the outburst. Willie Wilson hit a two-run inside-the-park homer in the seventh inning. Eduardo Rodriguez was the beneficiary of his teammates' hitting and breezed to his fourth straight win.

Tigers 6, Brewers 2 at Detroit (day game):
Homers by Jason Thompson, Rusty Staub and Steve Kemp powered the Tigers to a 6-2 victory over the Brewers. Thompson's blast followed a single by Kemp in the second inning and Staub unloaded a two-run clout in the third. Kemp socked a bases-empty drive in the sixth.

Indians 3, Twins 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Halting a five-game Minnesota winning streak, the Indians edged the Twins, 3-2, as Wayne Garland was credited with his first win since April, 1978. The Indians tallied all their runs in the sixth inning on singles by Tom Veryzer, Bobby Bonds, Rick Manning, Ron Pruitt and Gary Alexander. Alexander's blow drove home two runs.

Yankees 12, Angels 10 at New York (day game):
Driving in five runs with a homer and single, Graig Nettles paced the Yankees to a 12-10 victory over the Angels. Nettles hit his homer following singles by Willie Randolph and Thurman Munson in the first inning and capped a five-run eighth with a two-run single. Reggie Jackson singled in two of the Yankees' three runs in the seventh inning and marked the 10th consecutive game in which he had one or more RBIs, two games short of the major league record.

[DH] Blue Jays 3, Rangers 1 (day game) / Rangers 7, Blue Jays 5 at Toronto (day game):
Snapping their six-game losing streak, the Blue Jays beat the Rangers, 3-1, in the opener of a doubleheader, but the Rangers came back to win the nightcap, 7-5. In the opener, the score was 1-1 in the sixth when Alfredo Griffin doubled, moved to third on a grounder by Roy Howell and scored on a double by John Mayberry. Griffin led off the eighth with a triple and scored on a grounder by Howell. A seven-run explosion in the eighth inning of the nightcap lifted the Rangers to victory. A double by Buddy Bell produced the first two runs of the inning. Following a walk to Richie Zisk, Bell scored on a single by John Ellis. A single by pat Putnam drove home Zisk. Mike Jorgensen then capped the scoring with a three-run homer.

Astros 3, Cubs 0 at Houston (day game):
A five-hitter by Joe Niekro carried the Astros to a 3-0 victory over the Cubs. The Astros' first run came in the second inning on a single by Alan Ashby following a pair of walks. Terry Puhl led off the Astros' third with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Jeff Leonard. Leonard moved to second when Cub catcher Tim Blackwell bobbled the throw to the plate and scored on a double by Jose Cruz.

Dodgers 8, Expos 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
Blasting off with four runs in the first inning, the Dodgers won their seventh straight game, beating the Expos, 8-2. With one out in the first, Bill Russell singled and moved to third on a double by Dusty Baker. An infield grounder by Steve Garvey scored Russell and a double by Ron Cey plated Baker. Joe Ferguson followed with a homer. Davey Lopes also homered with a man on base when the Dodgers added three runs in the fourth.

Reds 7, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
A two-run homer by Paul Blair -- his first National League hit -- highlighted the Reds' 7-3 victory over the Pirates. Blair's blow came in the middle of the Reds' four-run sixth inning. Dan Driessen added a solo shot in the eighth as Mike LaCoss got credit for his fourth consecutive win.

Padres 5, Mets 4 at San Diego (day game):
A single by Gene Richards in the 10th inning lifted the Padres to a 5-4 triumph over the Mets. Dan Briggs led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Pinch-hitter Fernando Gonzalez struck out and pinch-hitter Broderick Perkins drew an intentional walk before Kurt Bevacqua also walked to load the sacks. Richards then drilled his game-winning hit.

Phillies 12, Giants 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Clobbering five pitchers for 15 hits, the Phillies thumped the Giants, 12-3. Mike Schmidt paced the attack with a homer and single, plus three walks. His homer was a solo clout in the second inning. The Phils scored three runs off reliever Tom Griffin in the sixth with the big hits being doubles by Garry Maddox and Jose Cardenal. They added five more in the eighth with a pinch-hit double by Del Unser driving in two tallies.

Cardinals 7, Braves 3 at St. Louis (day game):
Driving home three runs with a double and single, George Hendrick paced the Cardinals to a 7-3 victory over the Braves. The two-bagger capped a three-run fourth inning and Hendrick's single drove home the first run of a three-run seventh, which was climaxed by a two-run homer by Ken Oberkfell, his first major league round-tripper.
