Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 1, Blue Jays 0 at Cleveland (night game):
A two-hitter by Rick Waits enabled the Indians to edge the Blue Jays, 1-0. The lone tally came in the first frame when Paul Dade singled with one out and took second as Rick Manning walked. Andre Thornton grounded to short and when second baseman Dave McKay let the throw get away from him on an attempted force play, Dade raced home.

Rangers 7, Twins 5 at Minnesota (night game):
A single by Buddy Bell broke a 5-5 tie in the eighth inning and lifted the Rangers to a 7-5 triumph over the Twins. Larvell Blanks drew a walk to open the Ranger eighth but was forced at second by Bump Wills. After Johnny Grubb fouled out, Wills stole second and then scored on Bell's fourth hit of the game. The Rangers picked up an insurance tally in the ninth on an RBI single by Jim Sundberg. Ron Jackson hit a two-run homer for the Twins.

Tigers 3, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
A two-run rally in the top of the eighth inning carried the Tigers to a 3-1 triumph over the Yankees. The score was 1-1 going into the eighth when Ron LeFlore walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Lou Whitaker, took third on an infield out and scored on a single by Steve Kemp. Kemp went to third on a double by Jason Thompson and scored when Lance Parrish beat out a slow roller to third.

Royals 1, Mariners 0 at Seattle (night game):
A sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Pete LaCock in the eighth inning lifted the Royals to a 1-0 blanking of the Mariners. George Brett drew a one-out walk in the eighth and then stole second. With a 2-and-0 count on Amos Otis, Byron McLaughlin replaced starter Floyd Bannister on the mound for the Mariners and completed the walk to Otis. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, setting up LaCock's game-winning fly to deep right field.

Reds 7, Padres 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Tightening their grip on first place in the N. L. West, the Reds whipped the Padres, 7-4, behind a solo homer by George Foster in the third inning and three RBIs by Dan Driessen. Foster's clout broke a 3-3 tie. Driessen's first-inning double plated one run and he drove in two more runs in the fourth with another two-base hit.
