Angels 2, Brewers 1 at California (night game):
A home run by Don Baylor leading off the ninth inning gave the Angels a 2-1 triumph over the Brewers. Baylor connected on the first pitch of the inning from Mike Caldwell. The Angels had tied the score in the seventh on a walk to Joe Rudi, sacrifice by Carney Lansford and double by Bobby Grich.
Indians 5, Blue Jays 3 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians scored three runs in the eighth inning without the benefit of a hit and defeated the Blue Jays, 5-3. Andre Thornton opened the stanza with a base on balls and took second on a bunt by Ron Pruitt, who reached base safely when pitcher Jerry Garvin's throw hit Thornton. After Gary Alexander struck out, Horace Speed ran for Pruitt and Toby Harrah walked to load the bases. Duane Kuiper hit a grounder to shortstop Alfredo Griffin, who threw the ball into right field trying for a double play as Thornton and Speed scored on the error. Harrah scored the final run on an error by second baseman Tim Johnson.
Rangers 9, Twins 8 at Minnesota (night game):
Dealing ace reliever Mike Marshall his second loss in as many nights, the Rangers staged a five-run rally in the eighth inning to prevail over the Twins, 9-8. Marshall was called in after Mike Bacsik gave up two runs on a single by Johnny Grubb, double by Richie Zisk and single by Pat Putnam. After a walk to Mike Jorgensen, Jim Sundberg doubled to score one run and John Ellis followed with a single that drove home two more tallies.
Yankees 11, Tigers 3 at New York (night game):
Posting his eighth consecutive victory, southpaw Tommy John enjoyed the benefit of 16-hit support as the Yankees routed the Tigers, 11-3. Graig Nettles hit two singles and pair of sacrifice flies to produce four runs and Chris Chambliss accounted for three RBIs with two homers.
White Sox 2, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
The White Sox pushed a run across in the top of ninth inning and edged the A's, 2-1. Eric Soderholm slashed a one-out single and was replaced by pinch-runner Joe Gates. After stopping at second on a single by Lamar Johnson, Gates advanced to third on a long fly to center by Wayne Nordhagen and scored on a single by Junior Moore.
[DH] Royals 7, Mariners 4 (night game) / Mariners 6, Royals 2 at Seattle (night game):
Dividing a twin bill, the Royals won the opener, 7-4, and the Mariners captured the nightcap, 6-2. In the first game, after a homer by Clint Hurdle in the fifth inning put the Royals ahead to stay at 2-1, Darrell Porter decided the outcome with a three-run smash in the sixth. The Mariners erupted for four runs in the eighth inning of the second game to break a 2-2 tie. Larry Cox began the winning rally with a single and scored on singles by Julio Cruz and Ruppert Jones. Another Mariner run crossed the plate on a throwing error by catcher John Wathan before Willie Horton capped the frame with a two-run homer.
Dodgers 5, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
A homer by Dusty Baker in the 10th inning lifted the Dodgers to a 5-4 decision over the Braves. The game had been tied since the sixth when the Dodgers scored on a double by Steve Garvey and single by Derrel Thomas.
Cubs 7, Phillies 1 at Chicago (day game):
A grand-slam homer by Barry Foote highlighted the Cubs' 7-1 thumping of the Phillies. Foote's blast against his ex-teammates came in the fifth inning and was set up by a single by Dave Kingman, walk to Steve Ontiveros and single by Jerry Martin. The Cubs picked up their three previous runs in the first inning on a single by Ivan DeJesus, triple by Bill Buckner, singles by Kingman and Ontiveros and a double by Martin. Mike Schmidt hit a homer to save the Phillies from a shutout at the hands of Lynn McGlothen.
Padres 2, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
A two-run double by Kurt Bevacqua in the ninth inning enabled the Padres to post a 2-1 victory over the Reds. The Padres had two out and nobody on base when the winning rally began with a walk to Bill Fahey. Gene Tenace followed with a single and Bevacqua then lined his two-bagger to right-center.
Giants 8, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Posting his first major league victory, Phil Nastu pitched the Giants to an 8-1 victory over the Astros. Jack Clark smacked a two-run double in the second inning and Larry Herndon drove in two runs with a two-bagger in the fourth. Willie McCovey clouted a solo homer in the sixth, his 506th career round-tripper.
Mets 3, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A two-run homer by Joel Youngblood triggered the Mets to a 3-0 triumph over the Pirates. The big blast came in the fourth inning and followed a walk to John Stearns. The final tally scored in the seventh on a double by Lee Mazzilli and single by Willie Montanez. Skip Lockwood relieved starter Craig Swan in the ninth with runners on second and third and one out and prevented the Pirates from scoring.
Cardinals 1, Expos 0 at St. Louis (night game):
A two-out single in the ninth inning by Mike Phillips broke up a pitching duel between John Denny and Steve Rogers and gave the Cardinals a 1-0 triumph over the Expos. The Redbirds began the ninth with a leadoff single by Ted Simmons. Garry Templeton, running for Simmons, stole second and stopped at third on a single by George Hendrick. After Tony Scott was intentionally passed to load the bases, Ken Reitz bounced into a first-to-home-to-first double play, leaving runners on second and third with two out. The Expos elected to pitch to Phillips, who spoiled the strategy by lining the game-winning single to right. Denny allowed only two hits, none after the second inning.
