Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 10, Red Sox 6 at Boston (night game):
A six-run outburst in the fifth inning carried the Orioles to a 10-6 triumph over the Red Sox. A double by Ken Singleton and singles by Eddie Murray and Lee May produced the first run to break a 4-4 tie. Following a hit batsman and a bases-loaded walk, a double by Al Bumbry drove in two runs and a single by Mark Belanger plated two more.
Angels 4, Brewers 3 at California (night game):
A wild throw by Milwaukee third baseman Sal Bando enabled the winning run to score as the Angels edged the Brewers, 4-3, in 11 innings. With two out and nobody on base, Dan Ford beat out an infield hit. Rod Carew then bunted safely down the third base line and Ford scored when Bando threw wild to first. The Brewers pulled off a triple play in the fourth inning. With runners on first and second, Bobby Grich bounced to Bando, who stepped on third for one out, threw to second for the second out and the relay to first beat Grich.
Blue Jays 4, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Firing a six-hitter, Dave Lemanczyk hurled the Blue Jays to a 4-3 victory over the Indians. The Jays scored one run in each of the first two innings on singles by Rico Carty and Rick Cerone. Indian errors resulted in a pair of unearned tallies in the fourth, the markers being driven across on a sacrifice fly by Bob Bailor and a groundout by Roy Howell.
Rangers 8, Twins 4 at Minnesota (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Rangers defeated the Twins, 8-4. An RBI double by Johnny Grubb and two-run single by Al Oliver produced a 3-0 lead in the third inning. The Rangers then iced the game with five runs in the sixth. Mike Jorgensen and Larvell Blanks stroked two-run doubles and Buddy Bell hit a single for the fifth run.
Yankees 6, Tigers 2 at New York (night game):
Returning from the bullpen, Ron Guidry scattered nine hits and struck out 13 batters as the Yankees routed Mark Fidrych en route to a 6-2 victory over the Tigers. All Yankee runs came on homers. Graig Nettles slammed a two-run blast in the opening frame and another two-run clout in the fourth. Chris Chambliss also connected for a two-run round-tripper in the fourth.
White Sox 3, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Scoring all their runs in the eighth inning, the White Sox posted a 3-1 decision over the A's. Jorge Orta batted in a pair with a double and scored himself on a single by Bill Nahorodny. A triple by Miguel Dilone and sacrifice fly by Mitchell Page accounted for the A's only marker in the fourth.
Royals 4, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
A homer by Clint Hurdle in the ninth inning lifted the Royals to a 4-3 victory over the Mariners as Steve Busby got credit for his first victory since April 9, 1978 and his first route-going victory since May 1, 1976. The Royals had tied the contest in the sixth when George Brett doubled, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Amos Otis.
Braves 3, Dodgers 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Dale Murphy drove in all three of the Braves' runs in a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers. Murphy's first RBI came in the first inning with a single that followed a double by Jerry Royster. After the Dodgers took a 2-1 lead, the Braves rallied in the eighth. With one out, pinch-hitter Mike Lum singled. One out later, Gary Matthews and Jeff Burroughs walked to load the sacks and bring on Bob Welch in relief of starter Andy Messersmith. Murphy greeted Welch with a single that drove home Lum and Matthews.
Phillies 13, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Unleashing an 11-hit bombardment, the Phillies blasted the Cubs, 13-0, behind the three-hit hurling of Steve Carlton. The southpaw retired the first 18 batten he faced before yielding a leadoff single to Ivan DeJesus in the seventh inning. Rudy Meoli paced the Phils' attack with four RBIs, slashing a two-run double in the second inning and two-run single in the third. Garry Maddox blasted a three-run homer in the seventh and Mike Schmidt hit a two-run round-tripper in the eighth.
Reds 7, Padres 0 at Cincinnati (day game):
The Reds exploded for five runs in the third inning and breezed to a 7-0 blanking of the Padres. Two-out walks to Junior Kennedy and Champ Summers touched off the Reds' big inning. George Foster followed with an RBI single and after a walk to Dan Driessen, Ray Knight delivered a two-run single. Rick Auerbach then capped the outburst with a two-run double.
Giants 8, Astros 4 at Houston (night game):
Erupting for four runs in the 10th inning, the Giants defeated the Astros, 8-4. Starting the outburst, Larry Herndon singled with one out and Marc Hill reached first on an error by shortstop Craig Reynolds. One out later, pinch-hitter Bill North drew a walk to fill the bases and Bill Madlock followed with a two-run single. Singles by Terry Whitfield and Jack Clark then swelled the margin.
Pirates 4, Mets 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A pinch-hit homer by Mike Easler leading off the 13th inning gave the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Mets. Easler hit the first pitch of the inning thrown by Met reliever Skip Lockwood. A homer by Willie Stargell in the seventh frame had given the Pirates a 3-2 lead, but the Mets tied contest in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Gil Flores.
Cardinals 2, Expos 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Handing the Expos their second whitewashing in as many games, the Cardinals posted a 2-0 victory as Bob Forsch, with relief help from Mark Littell, gained credit for his first win of the season. The Redbirds scored both their runs off Bill Lee in the sixth inning. Lou Brock connected for a one-out single and Keith Hernandez walked with two men out. Ted Simmons then belted a double off the left field wall, scoring both runners.
