Red Sox 6, Orioles 2 at Boston (night game):
Homers by Jim Rice and Butch Hobson triggered the Red Sox to a 6-2 triumph over the Orioles. Rice's clout came in the first inning and followed a two-out walk to Fred Lynn. Hobson blasted a solo smash in the second. The Red Sox added three insurance markers in the eighth, one on a single by Rick Burleson and two on a double by Lynn.
Angels 8, Brewers 5 at California (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Angels defeated the Brewers, 8-5. Breaking a 4-4 tie, the Angels took the lead to stay in the fourth inning on singles by Brian Downing and Bobby Grich and an infield out by Rick Miller. Bert Campaneris drove in the Angels' last three runs with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and a single in the eighth.
Indians 8, Blue Jays 3 at Cleveland (day game):
Crashing a pair of two-run homers, Toby Harrah paced the Indians to an 8-3 victory over the Blue Jays. The Tribe snapped a 3-3 tie with three runs in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jim Norris and Harrah's first two-run blast. Harrah's second round-tripper came in the eighth.
Twins 7, Royals 6 at Kansas City (night game):
Extending his hitting streak to 17 games, Roy Smalley had a single, double and two walks to highlight the Twins' 7-6 victory over the Royals. Smalley's two-bagger came with one out in the first inning and was followed by five straight hits -- singles by Ken Landreaux, Butch Wynegar, Ron Jackson, Glenn Adams and Willie Norwood -- that produced four runs. The Twins added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Hosken Powell and two more in the eighth on a solo homer by Rob Wilfong and a wild pitch by Royals' reliever Al Hrabosky.
White Sox 5, A's 1 at Oakland (day game):
Combining on a two-hitter, Ken Kravec and Mike Proly hurled the White Sox to a 5-1 victory over the A's. Claudell Washington batted in the first two runs for the White Sox with a single in the third inning. After Jeff Newman homered for the A's in the seventh, the White Sox iced the game with three runs in the eighth, scoring one on a single by Chet Lemon and a pair on a single by Alan Bannister.
Braves 6, Dodgers 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Behind the steady pitching of Phil Niekro, the Braves posted a 6-3 decision over the Dodgers. The Braves trailed, 3-2, going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but erupted for three runs. Bob Horner was safe on an error by shortstop Bill Russell and Barry Bonnell followed with a home run. Glenn Hubbard stroked a single, raced to third when catcher Steve Yeager erred on a sacrifice by Pepe Frias and scored on a grounder by Jerry Royster.
Phillies 23, Cubs 22 at Chicago (day game):
Climaxing a scoring marathon, a homer by Mike Schmidt -- his second round-tripper of the game -- with two out in the 10th inning lifted the Phillies to a 23-22 victory in a slugfest with the Cubs. Aided by an 18-mile-per-hour wind, the teams combined for 11 home runs. tying the major league record. Dave Kingman belted three circuit clouts for the Cubs, knocking in six runs, but teammate Bill Buckner took the RBI honors, driving in seven runs with a grand slam and three singles. Steve Ontiveros and Jerry Martin also homered for the Cubs. In addition to Schmidt's pair, the Phillies had round-trippers by Bob Boone, Randy Lerch and Garry Maddox. Boone had three hits and drove in five runs. The game produced a total of 50 hits, two shy of the N. L. record for an extra-inning game. The Phillies collected 24 hits, including five by Larry Bowa and four by Maddox. Buckner's four hits topped the Cubs. The Phillies led, 17-6, after 3½ innings, but the Cubs kept battling back and finally tied the score at 22-22 with three runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Buckner, Martin and Barry Foote.
Giants 3, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Ed Halicki turned in his second straight two-hitter and pitched the Giants to a 3-0 victory over the Astros. All runs came in the seventh inning. A single by Darrell Evans and one-out triple by Larry Herndon produced the first tally and after a walk to marc Hill, a single by Roger Metzger plated Herndon. The final marker scored on a bases-loaded walk.
Pirates 6, Mets 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Two homers by Willie Stargell sparked the Pirates to a 6-5 victory over the Mets. Stargell's second round-tripper came with two out in the eighth inning following a walk to Bill Robinson and provided the winning margin.
Expos 3, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (day game):
A homer by Tony Solaita with one out in nthe inth enabled the Expos to salvage a 2-2 tie with the Cardinals in a game suspended after 10 innings to allow both clubs time to catch planes. The contest was resumed June 25 with the Expos coming to bat in the 11th inning.
