Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 10, Red Sox 0 at Boston (night game):
In their first meeting this season, the Yankees thrashed the Red Sox, 10-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Jim Beattie, who posted his first major league shutout. The Yankees loaded the bases against Mike Torrez in the fifth inning and scored their first run on a sacrifice fly by Thurman Munson. After a walk reloaded the bases, Reggie Jackson, who was observing his 33rd birthday, lashed a two-run double. Munson picked up his second RBI of the game with a single in the eighth when the Yankees added four runs.

Angels 7, White Sox 3 at California (night game):
Three and two-thirds innings of one-hit relief pitching by Mark Clear, after replacing Frank Tanana, helped the Angels defeat the White Sox, 7-3. The Angels broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the fourth when the White Sox missed pulling off an ordinary double play and wound up with an unusual one. Carney Lansford singled to open the stanza and, after Brian Downing grounded out, Bobby Grich and Bert Campaneris walked to load the bases, bringing Rich Hinton to the mound for the White Sox in relief of Ron Schueler. Rick Miller grounded to second baseman Alan Bannister, who tried to start a double play by tagging Campaneris, but the runner backed off. Bannister then threw out Miller at first as Lansford scored. On the return throw from first baseman Lamar Johnson to shortstop Greg Pryor, Campaneris was caught in a rundown, but before he could be retired to complete the double play, Grich also scored.

Tigers 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
An argument with an umpire that resulted in the banishment of Lou Whitaker worked out to the advantage of the Tigers when Mark Wagner, who took Whitaker's place at second base, hit a two-run double in the ninth inning to beat the Indians. 5-3. Singles by Aurelio Rodriguez and Ron LeFlore preceded Wagner's two-bagger. Whitaker had three hits in three trips and also drove in two runs before drawing his walking papers in the fifth inning.

Twins 10, Royals 6 at Kansas City (night game):
A two-run single by Hosken Powell for his fourth hit of the game capped a 10th-inning outburst by the Twins, who scored four times on four walks and only two hits to defeat the Royals, 10-6. Roy Smalley hit a pair of run-scoring singles, extending his batting streak to 18 games, and Ron Jackson smashed a homer as the Twins came from behind to force the contest into overtime. In the 10th, Ken Landreaux led off with a single and Bombo Rivera sacrificed. After Renie Martin walked Jackson, Al Hrabosky relieved and passed Butch Wynegar to load the bases. Willie Norwood struck out, but Hrabosky then lost control and walked both Bob Randall and John Castino to force in two runs before Powell iced the verdict with his single.

Brewers 8, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
The three-hit pitching of Bill Travers enabled the Brewers to roll over the A's, 8-0. Cecil Cooper drove in three runs, getting credit for one RBI on a walk with the bases loaded in the second inning and accounting for two others with singles in the sixth and eighth. Paul Molitor chipped in with a solo homer.

Mariners 13, Rangers 5 at Seattle (night game):
Larry Cox drove in five runs with a double and single, while Bruce Bochte, Dan Meyer and Willie Horton had three hits apiece, as the Mariners trounced the Rangers, 13-5. Horton, who extended his batting streak to 15 games, had a two-run homer among his hits. The Rangers had a 4-3 lead before the Mariners pulled ahead with three runs in the fifth inning, two scoring on Cox' single. When the Mariners iced the decision with five runs in the sixth, Cox accounted for three RBIs with a bases-loaded double.

Orioles 7, Blue Jays 6 at Toronto (night game):
Eddie Murray walked in 11th inning, took second on a wild pitch by Dave Freisleben and scored on a single by Al Bumbry to bring the Orioles a 7-6 victory over the Blue Jays. The Orioles had a 6-3 lead before the Blue Jays picked up a run on a wild pitch by Mike Flanagan in the seventh and forced the game into overtime with scoring singles by John Mayberry and Alfredo Griffin in the eighth.

Braves 6, Giants 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Dale Murphy smashed three homers, bringing his season's total to 13, and Bob Horner hit his first of the year as the Braves defeated the Giants, 6-4. Murphy hit his first homer of the game with two men on base in the first inning and Horner followed with a solo shot in the attack on Vida Blue. Murphy tagged Blue for another homer in the third and capped his five-RBI evening with a blow off Tom Griffin in the seventh.

Pirates 9, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):
After the Phillies and Cubs hit a record-tying 11 homers in the previous day's game, there was another bombardment in Wrigley Field with six circuit clouts as the Pirates defeated the Cubs, 9-5. Wind again was a factor, blowing out at 16 miles per hour. Dave Kingman, who hit three homers against the Phillies, whacked another against the Pirates. The Cubs also had round-trippers by Ted Sizemore and Bill Buckner, while Dave Parker, Willie Stargell and Steve Nicosia connected for the Pirates. However, homers didn't figure when Pirates broke the tie with two runs in the fifth. Markers scored on a single by Parker, double by Bill Robinson and single by Nicosia.

Reds 7, Dodgers 6 at Cincinnati (night game):
Singles by Joe Morgan and Dan Driessen around a sacrifice by Paul Blair in the ninth inning gave the Reds a 7-6 victory over the Dodgers. Cesar Geronimo drove in three runs with a sacrifice fly and a double, and Johnny Bench batted in pair with a bases-loaded single to help the Reds take a 6-2 lead before the Dodgers erupted to tie the score with two-run homers by Bill Russell and Steve Garvey in the eighth inning.

Astros 3, Padres 2 at Houston (night game):
After Craig Reynolds bunted safely to open the eighth inning, Enos Cabell and Jose Cruz came through with two-out singles to supply the Astros' winning run in a 3-2 victory over the Padres. Joe Niekro held the Padres to four hits, but Gene Richards tripled and scored on an infield out by Broderick Perkins in the third and homered to tie the score in the eighth. The Astros' early runs included a circuit clout by Alan Ashby.

Expos 5, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
A two-run homer by Andre Dawson carried the Expos to a 5-3 victory over the Phillies and handed Dick Ruthven his first defeat of the season after the Phils' starter had won six straight games. The Expos were trailing, 3-1, going into the seventh inning when Ellis Valentine doubled and scored on a pair of infield outs. Pinch-hitter Tommy Hutton then singled and Dawson followed with his homer.
