Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Yankees 3 at Boston (day game):
Led by Fred Lynn, who batted in two runs and scored one, the Red Sox edged the Yankees, 4-3. In the first inning, Rick Burleson singled and scored on a double by Lynn, who also crossed the plate on a single by Jim Rice. The Yankees picked up a run on singles by Mickey Rivers, Roy White and Thurman Munson in the fifth and went ahead with two in the seventh on a bases-loaded single by Graig Nettles. The Red Sox came back to win in their half. Dwight Evans led off with an infield hit, took second on a sacrifice by Gary Allenson and scored on a single by Jerry Remy, who took second on the throw. Lynn then singled to drive in the deciding run. The Red Sox pulled off four double plays, all started by second baseman Remy.

Angels 10, White Sox 6 at California (night game):
The Angels exploded for seven runs in the first inning, starting with a homer by Carney Lansford and capping the outburst with another homer by Bobby Grich, to defeat the White Sox, 10-6, for their fifth straight victory. After Lansford's leadoff blow, the Angels added six more runs, two scoring on a bases-loaded single by Merv Rettenmund, before Grich came to the plate and homered with two aboard.

Indians 6, Tigers 0 at Cleveland (day game):
Jim Norris knocked in five runs with a pair of homers and three Indians' pitchers combined on a four-hitter to shut out the Tigers, 6-0. Starter Rick Waits was lifted in the seventh inning after hitting Rusty Staub with a pitch and walking Steve Kemp. Don Hood issued a pass with one out to load the bases before Dan Spillner took over to complete the shutout.

A's 12, Brewers 4 at Oakland (day game):
Jeff Newman hit a homer, single and sacrifice fly, driving in four runs, and Dave Revering rapped four hits including a pair of doubles, for three RBIs to lead the A's attack in a 12-4 victory over the Brewers. John Henry Johnson, a winner for the first time after losing six decisions, gave up six hits including homers by Dick Davis, Paul Molitor and Jim Wohlford, before Dave Heaverlo relieved for the last two innings.

Mariners 4, Rangers 0 at Seattle (night game):
Supported by three homers, Floyd Bannister won a duel with Fergie Jenkins and pitched the Mariners to a 4-0 victory over the Rangers. Bannister gave up six hits, while Jenkins yielded only five. However, Jenkins' fate was decided when Julio Cruz led off the first inning with a homer. Ruppert Jones, batting next, singled, stole second, continued to third on a throwing error by Jim Sundberg and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bruce Bochte. Leon Roberts homered in the second inning and Jones hit his second inside-the-park homer of the season in the eighth.

Orioles 4, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (day game):
A pass to Kiko Garcia in the eighth inning and a double by Rick Dempsey supplied what proved to be the Orioles' winning run in a 4-3 victory over the Blue Jays. The Orioles also had a two-run homer by Lee May, while Roy Howell produced a pair for the Blue Jays with a double.

[DH] Giants 4, Braves 2 (night game) / Giants 7, Braves 6 at Atlanta (night game):
With Willie McCovey as the batting star, the Giants swept a doubleheader with the Braves, winning the first game, 4-2, and going 11 innings to take the second game, 7-6. In the opener, McCovey batted in the Giants' first run with an infield out in the first inning and added another with a single in the fifth to tie the score at 2-2. Bill North doubled in the seventh, continued to third on a throwing error by right fielder Gary Matthews and scored on a sacrifice fly by Terry Whitfield to put the Giants ahead before Bill Madlock clinched the decision with a homer in the eighth. In the nightcap, McCovey was out of the lineup while Mike Ivie played first base for the Giants, but the veteran slugger came off the bench in the 11th and delivered a two-run pinch-homer to win the game. Ivie and Larry Herndon both homered for the Giants in the second inning. Bob Horner drove in the Braves' first three runs with a sacrifice fly and a homer. The Giants, who scored two unearned runs on a throwing error by catcher Bruce Benedict in the seventh, held a 5-3 lead until the Braves tied the score in ninth with a homer by Charlie Spikes and doubles by Matthews and Jeff Burroughs.

Pirates 3, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Making his first start of the season, Jim Rooker scattered three hits over 8 1/3 innings as the Pirates defeated the Cubs, 3-0. After Dave Parker homered in the first inning, the game was a tight duel until the Pirates added an insurance pair in the eighth with walks to Dale Berra and Omar Moreno, a single by John Milner and a wild pitch. Rooker was removed with one away in the ninth after Ted Sizemore bunted safely and Sam Mejias walked. Enrique Romo, in relief, passed Bobby Murcer to load the bases but then retired Mike Vail before Grant Jackson came in to get Bill Buckner for the final out.

Reds 5, Dodgers 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
A balk call that provoked an argument and resulted in the ejection of manager Tommy Lasorda of the Dodgers proved to be a factor in enabling the Reds to gain a 5-4 victory. With the Dodgers leading, 2-1, the Reds loaded the bases in the third inning on singles by Ken Griffey and Dave Concepcion and a pass to Joe Morgan. Johnny Bench then singled, driving in two runs. Morgan took third and was waved home when Rick Sutcliffe was called for a balk. The Reds added what proved to be their deciding run in the fifth when Morgan doubled and Dan Driessen singled.

Padres 4, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Homers by Barry Evans and Gene Tenace on consecutive pitches thrown by J.R. Richard in the 11th inning carried the Padres to a 4-2 victory over the Astros. Evans' homer was his first in the major leagues.

Cardinals 9, Mets 4 at New York (day game):
Capitalizing on a two-out error by Richie Hebner in the 12th inning, the Cardinals scored six unearned runs to defeat the Mets, 9-4. The Cards picked up their first three runs in the first inning, two scoring on a homer by Keith Hernandez, but the Mets came back with a pair in their half on four singles and tied the score in fifth with two walks and a single by Hebner for his second RBI of the game. However, in the 12th, after a single by Ted Simmons and two passes loaded the bases with two away, Hebner became the goat when the third baseman booted a grounder by George Hendrick as Simmons scored. Lou Brock, Ken Oberkfell, Hernandez and Simmons, who batted for the second time in the inning, followed with singles for five more runs. Hebner came up with his fourth hit when the Mets scored once in the 12th.

Expos 10, Phillies 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
Five homers -- two by Andre Dawson and Warren Cromartie in the fifth inning, two by Tony Perez and Ellis Valentine in the seventh and one by Dan Schatzeder in the eighth -- powered the Expos to a 10-5 victory over the Phillies. The Phillies opened a 4-0 lead with the aid of a three-run homer by Bake McBride, but the Expos tied the score, 4-4, in the fifth when Larry Parrish singled, Tommy Hutton scored him with a double and Dawson and Cromartie homered. Then, in the seventh, Cromartie singled and Perez and Valentine hit their round-trippers.
